Re:I should have loved biology on Thursday August 20, 2026 @03:14PM (#49378864)
This resonated strongly. I hated biology as a kid but have been blown away at the wonder of it all as I've started to study it as an adult. I wish more of the magnificence and wonder of it all was conveyed vs the rote memorization that is so commonly taught.
Re:Data centers in space makes no sense on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @03:57PM (#46891662)
I think the thing I often see missed in these discussions is the cost and time burden imposed by regulation. It's nearly impossible to build power plants in the US today. Launching satellites while hard, solves this problem.

Even if it's more expensive, Spacex will be able to deploy hardware when no one else can because all the gas turbines and existing power plants have been exhausted and the lead time to build new ones is 5+ years out because of the bureaucratic overhead.

it's click-bait, the lane keeping is free and is not going away
Lane keeping is a default feature for free on all tesla's and this article doesn't say it's going away.

Re:Think in Math. Write in Code on Friday November 14, 2025 @08:49AM (#45926669)
I've felt for a long time that math notation is just a really bad programming language.

I think a corollary to this is that we should teach math with code.

Re:Who benefits from the MAHA anti-science push? on Wednesday October 22, 2025 @10:59AM (#45670148)
Believing that one should be able to consume raw milk is not anti-science. Yes pasteurization kills bacteria that can be present in milk which can cause serious harm and also it kills bacteria that can be positive and people should have the right to choose to consume it and sell it with proper disclosures.
Their actual internal deadlines were significantly missed
Can you name a rocket program that was delivered ahead of schedule? I'm not aware of one that exists.
Which highlights how unserious this whole thing is. SLS hardly works and is way behind schedule.
Starship is more flight ready then SLS and new Glenn. It's just not fully reusable yet, so it's not ready by Spacex standards but far ahead of anyone else in the world. They could also use falcon heavy but might as well use Starship, unless they need dragon.
Artemis is a joke. You can tell this is politically motivated by their stance on SLS. If they were serious they would give Spacex the SLS contract for being years and years behind schedule.

Re:No one is disrupting banks on Monday January 27, 2025 @09:38AM (#42841545)
The big banks are larger then ever because of consolidation and inflation but I do think they're getting disrupted.

I think services like Fidelity are meaningfully disrupting banks. I much rather have my money in a money market fund then a deposit checking account. Most loans are not being held on bank balance sheets any more either, but are getting sold to the market, so they're no longer as critical a part of the financing stack.

And we're still early days on stable tokens and the defi infrastructure around them.

Yeah, big mistake. I consider California and New York as hostile nations when hiring.
Re:U.S. forgives 40k student loans on Wednesday April 20, 2022 @12:15PM (#31099171)
Semantics, they should stop underwriting them.
Re:U.S. forgives 40k student loans on Wednesday April 20, 2022 @12:08PM (#31099028)
It's crazy to cancel student loans and still keep issuing the exact same loans. If we believe the loans are unjust then the government should stop handing them out as the very first step.
Great analysis, I agree with your points.
On that point I'd agree. Death from adverse reactions to the vaccine are well below natural rates of death from covid itself, which in my mind should be the key metric.
You see, if the vaccine worked as originally advertised, people who are vaccinated should not contract covid. Therefor it does not work as originally advertised.

Now before everyone freaks out - we've changed the claim around what a vaccine does. It's no longer intended to prevent spreading covid or prevent contracting covid, it's just intended to reduce symptoms of covid. So if that's your definition of vaccine efficacy then I would agree her claims were false.

Yes Ukraine is a sovereign nation but NATO is not. The US and Russia have an agreement that NATO will not encroach onto Russias border which allowing Ukraine to join (a US decision) would be a violation of.

It's akin to arguing that Cuba joining a Russian military alliance and re-installing ICBMs on their territory is totally fine because Cuba is a sovereign nation and can do whatever they want.

I feel that these articles rarely give any perspective on Russia's issue which is that Ukraine joining NATO would be a violation of prior agreements and would result in armaments being placed at their boarder which they view as a risk and security breach. The US is basically saying we don't care and we are going to do it despite your objections and then pretending Russia threatening military action is unilateral hostility.
the common cold or the flu
Yes. Covid will continue to mutate to become more contagious and less deadly. This is the natural progression of endemic viruses, they don't want to kill their hosts and they want to spread.
Re:Tesla's Growing Investor Revolt on Tuesday October 19, 2021 @10:35AM (#28918531)
If they controlled that many shares then it would be policy not a request. They clearly do not.
Re:Tesla's Growing Investor Revolt on Tuesday October 19, 2021 @09:29AM (#28917859)
This is just woke special interest groups buying shares to be loud. Sell your shares if you don't agree. This kind of thing is going to make being a public companies less and less desirable and push more and more companies too remain private, further concentrating wealth because of misguided "investor protection" rules.

Re:Self directed IRAs under attack in proposed tax bill on Sunday October 10, 2021 @11:45AM (#28819282)
You're right that I mixed up pre and post but that's exactly the point. It's post tax so he's ALREADY PAID TAXs and therefor will pay nothing when the funds are distributed.
Re:Self directed IRAs under attack in proposed tax bill on Thursday October 07, 2021 @12:42PM (#28788770)
This will force hundreds of thousands of people who own shares of small businesses within their retirement accounts to disgorge them.

They can't sell them to themselves because that's against the rules. If they distribute them then they have to pay a 10% tax penalty in addition to any income tax.

These are small thinly traded assets. What will very likely happen in practice is big wall street firms will come in and buy up thousands of American small businesses (retirees best assets) at a major discount similar to what Blackstone is currently doing with single family homes.

Re:Self directed IRAs under attack in proposed tax bill on Thursday October 07, 2021 @12:37PM (#28788696)
Roth IRAs are pre tax so even if this bill passes Peter Thiel won't have to pay any taxes on his $5B.
