When it comes to writing small languages/interpreters, it is obligatory to mention "Crafting Interpreters" by Robert Nystrom, so here we go!

Re:The HTML-in-Canvas API origin trial on Saturday October 24, 2026 @06:08AM (#50219758)
Which requires doing a ton of math/layout in JavaScript, since I need those shapes to go between, around and behind the normal HTML elements (working on games and editors here).

Doing all that is a colossal PITA, since SVGs aren't built to act as "fragments" I can arbitrarely draw with CSS or Canvas.

This new html-in-canvas API will alleviate the pain a bit, at least.

Re:The HTML-in-Canvas API origin trial on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:16AM (#50209446)
Yes, I'm aware of this API, but that's exactly the problem (IMHO): it's an API, not built right into CSS itself, thus forcing you to use JavaScript.

What I really want is something along the lines of...

    @declare-some-shape MYSHAPE (ARGS) {
        /* tree of draw commands */
        /* can reference css animations, timelines, variables, etc. */
    }

    #my-div { content: draw-some-shape(MYSHAPE ARGS, TRANSFORM); }

    /* or, as some kind of pseudo-element: */
    #my-div::draw-some-shape(MYSHAPE) { ??? }
And yeah, fully aware that this looks abominable, but I'd rather this than stringly/DOMly generating SVGs or drawing in a canvas.
Re:The HTML-in-Canvas API origin trial on Friday October 23, 2026 @06:14AM (#50206719)
Or to add canvas operations (in?)directly to CSS!

Imagine being able to declare a list of paths with fill/stroke-paints to draw, filled in from attributes, variables and `calc()` values... one can only dream.

They're less functions and more akin to templates or hygienic macros, iiuc from the specs/docs

...and it sure as hell doesn't help, that "social" media (not networks) is annihilating people's attention spans and ability to care, beyond upvoting and meaningless comments (like this one!).
Yep, and the understandable fear/worry/expectation/knowledge of that possibility happening, is part of the reason that (usually) stops that cycle from starting in the first place.
Not a lot of people, because if you went and murdered someone, their family (if they have any) would presumably just murder you in turn.
Re:Rust Is Tier-1 Language at Microsoft on Friday September 11, 2026 @06:02AM (#49655922)
Because retooling and relearning development pipelines (on any level/most teams) for games is a horrifically expensive and time-consuming affair... which are resources not spent on developing any one of the potentially dozen or so games. It's just priorities, alas.
Re:dotNET (OK, C#) gets union types on Monday May 25, 2026 @06:34AM (#48265344)
The new C# unions are not reference-only. The attribute/interface allows implementing custom union types by writing `TryGetValue`-methods instead of a single `object? Value {get;}`. The compiler handles this transparently.
Re:Xilem – An experimental Rust native UI framework on Wednesday April 08, 2026 @06:43AM (#47688266)
Seems to be "native" as in "not a web-browser/view".
Err, the website footer takes up the entire lower half of the viewport/screen, on mobile.

I've been tinkering with computers for 20 years now, working for the last 9, building a variety of side-projects & prototypes; most recently a binary data-format using gradual typing and writing a wiki focused on voxels. My focus lies mostly around compilers/DSLs, graphics and web-technology.

The current job/contract of creating an "Welding-Assembly Process-Tracking, Reconstruction and Reporting"-System (using C#/Typescript/PostgreSQL) is nearing completion (~1.5 months), so I'm looking for new/interesting opportunities... excluding AI/LLM related things.

That this is a plausible explanation is... beyond horrifying to me.

My current job/contract is nearing completion (~3 months), so I'm looking for something new-ish.

Maybe you could use unifont glyphs (drawn as SVGs?) as fallback?

Nah, [BetterFox](https://github.com/yokoffing/Betterfox) still works fine
On the surface level, building/compiling/running, maybe... But properly integrating with a given platform (or hell, version of platform!) is a whole new world of pain. :(
Given that many tools are relatively small, I'd almost argue it wouldn't take more than 30min, ignoring testing.
Oh, sorry! Shouldn't have said "all" there... :'D
Wasn't all that bad PR mostly caused by the coal/oil industry, doing some serious astroturfing for a decade or so?

Never heard of "human brain needs nicotine" before...

Re:The 5 levels of configuration languages on Sunday April 13, 2025 @07:11AM (#43671911)
The article actually (accidentally or on purpose?) refers to just that:

> How to avoid this madness? Introduce another low-level configuration file. Back to level one...

It absolutely does, as the definition of a voxel is, roughly, "a 3ormoreD regular grid of point-samples".
There are quite a lot of successful voxel-based; see https://voxel.wiki/wiki/projects/ for an incomplete list.

Most people think voxel means 'cube' or 'block', but really it just means "regularly spaced sample in a 3-or-more-D grid".

The voxel gamedev community tends to call Minecraft-y voxel games "bloxel"-based.

Perhaps redbean might be of interest? It's a web server with all the batteries included, scripted via lua.

With the help of the voxelgamedev community, I'm maintaining a relatively large listing of such projects over at https://voxel.wiki/wiki/projects/.

Sadly, a lot of projects get abandoned.... :(
