If the IDF were to detonate the rockets Hezbollah uses to explode before launch would this be different? What about gps devices or range finders?

Without a doubt it’s asymmetrical… and the common binary is military/terror but I fear this is a distinction left to the last century.

The loss of children is always unacceptable, but Hezbollah has a history of courting child soldiers… so skepticism is not unwarranted.

One contributor is the fact that law enforcement rarely strikes but used their FOP and “union” organizations to slow, or sandbag work as a negotiation tactic. With membership that is largely unaccountable the blue wall is a political tool to leverage public funds by threat of crime and alternatively allowing or shutting down private unionization efforts.

Re:Museum Fatigue on Thursday July 18, 2024 @12:07PM (#40997041)
If you are interested in what is being shown at a museum before you arrive, that really helps. The more context you have, the more enjoyable it will be, as you can find things to focus on.

Like Ikea, if you know what you are going to look at as opposed to a "casual stroll through hell before Nordic lunch," you can escape with fewer casualties. I hate going to Ikea as an activity, but running in to look at something or comparing 2 pieces of junk before purchase always finds me with a few not-so-bad extra items.

Re:Museum Fatigue on Thursday July 18, 2024 @12:00PM (#40996974)
My family has always gone to museums, every trip is punctuated with the best local variety. What I have noticed are the advancements in modern curation, with an eye toward storytelling, greatly improve the context, understanding, and enjoyment of an exhibit. Seasoned museum-goers and subject matter experts may find some attempts overly simplistic, but if you are there for the pieces and have the context, the overall story may not matter as much.

Within contemporary art, there is an art to providing pieces together without telling a story which allows visitors to draw their connections to the pieces. The Louvre is the antithesis of this, as the collections are largely divided into respective dead-guy collections.

Re:What happens if you shoot down a delivery drone? on Thursday July 11, 2024 @08:37PM (#40941832)
It will probably be confusing until the delta of monetary damage to drones outpaces the value of campaign contributions. Until then, we have articles to look forward to highlighting how "unreasonable" this behavior is so the window of manufactured consent can move to justify the new reality.

This is not a conspiracy, just the alignment of capital incentives that externalize current notions that could be argued as believed to be within the realm of "the public good."

No one is paid to advocate for common sense, privacy, or the right to shoot the free targets that avail themselves over your property.

I can in fact point to the link at the top of this page as one example.

Journalist have regularly covered journalism scandals. Can you point to AI that is capable of the same?

Another example: https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelnoer/2014/11/12/read-the...

https://www.thoughtco.com/the-top-journalism-scandals-207375...

And these lies are not something that AI can be trusted to reveal, but a journalist can.
Given that he apologized for the antisemitic content, it's not alleged behavior.

The original tweet did not mention any specific organization but the "Jewish community" writ large. The original tweet calls out this community for "dialectical hatred against whites" as a monolith, to which Musk commented that this is the "actual truth."

If <given racial group> is reduced to a monolithic stereotype and then accused of latent hate against another <given racial group>, the content is likely racist. If, in addition to the above, the comment then insinuates the monolithic group is guilty of an international conspiracy... then it's also a good bet that the racist comment is also anti-Semitic.

This episode makes Mr. Musk's bias crystal clear.

Citizens United could be used if the calculus on improvement were focused on environmental factors over direct capital constructs. Even with Capital constructs a local government could argue that reverting private parking lots into public parks would save $x in recovery and subsidy costs, etc.
Many creative companies don’t own real estate and are looking foward to sunsetting their existing leases to go with something much smaller and easier to manage. In addition to the rental square footage NNN leases and increasing energy and insurance will dove that the RTW push is short-lived as it financially makes little sense.
A recent drive though FL revealed the following.

Within indexical semiosis: The left lane = the fast lane

Ergo driver can identify as driving fast without regard to the actual speed limit or whether or not they are passing other vehicles. Ask people within FL what the left lane of the highway is called and you will seldom hear “the passing lane.”

Yes, another example of this is "sailors eye" or the ability to determine bearing and distance qucikly either in relation to or with an absence of landmarks.

With experience a lot of this can be internalized and an "old salt" would have the information seemingly without additional concentration.

Re:WHO advises against use of artificial sweeteners on Monday June 12, 2023 @12:16PM (#36295945)
Your choice of language is interesting. Regarding the WHO, if they banned artificial sweeteners from the start would you have suppored this unilateral process? "They let" indicates that you beleive the WHO does or should include a degree of power over every-day life.

There exists an International Sweeters Association, that has been against these efforts since it's inception 35 years ago: https://www.sweeteners.org/latest-science-post/the-who-recom...

https://www.sweeteners.org/about-isa/

Which shouldn't be a surprise given the Sugar Association is 80 years old: https://www.sugar.org/about/history/

So sure, consume "whatever the f*: you feel like knowing that either way you will be receiving "sciene based" communications from interested parties supporting that behavior.

Re:Ugh, Capitalism on Thursday May 18, 2023 @11:01AM (#35988935)
For-profit prisons, the "free market" of healthcare in the US, the need for environmental conditions free of demonstrably toxic chemicals, monopolistic rent-seeking... and more!... have legitimate use cases where capitalism is not positioned to address systemic issues. However, the author points to social media posts rather than address or even provide lip service to these concerns.

The result doesn't meet my bar for critical thinking, but I did appreciate the cartoon.

Have a good friend with family in Rhodes, always buy bottled beer and water and have it open at your table. Nothing in any bottle behind the bar is as advertised... but you can ususally drink whatver you can get the bartender to drink, especially if the bar tender is the "owner."
Re:Do We Live in a Society Without a Counterculture? on Wednesday February 01, 2023 @08:17PM (#34620709)
4chan is almost 20 years old, it may have been a countercultural element but I assure you kids these days are not on the chans like they once were. If it is still a cultural touchpoint for males 18-24 it is unlikely to remain so for much longer. Your yardstick for cultural relevance centered around creative AI usage is myopic when compared to the interests of actual younger humans who presumably would make up the counterculture.

What is hilarious is that by your definition it is concevable that the increasingly old men who continue to use 4chan could infact be the counterculture you seek... so in 60 years they will all be dead anyway (vax or no vax)

Prudent practice with a digital plotter includes reviewing the most current chart datum on paper or digitally and inputting potential hazards and waypoints in advance.

In navigation, you can plot hazards and assign vectors as “danger bearings.” These are commonly NLT or NMT for No Less/More Than so that you know where not to point the bow when you are in the vicinity of a specific hazard. I suspect those of us who grew up using substantially worse UI in digital plotters may be better off than those completely reliant upon them.

I agree, further to this line of thinking I’m not really seeing how widespread adoption of arms by the general public has as many benefits as private vehicle ownership. Apart from environmental externalities, we know the cost for one is higher in terms of strict mortality… to that end shouldn’t the social utility of fire arms be higher? I can use my car to get my kids to school at least.

Perhaps we go in on a startup to modify the AR platform to distribute COVID tests or vaccines?

We have many laws and regulation in place to lower children MV deaths. This includes things like seat belt, booster seat, child seat expiration and couple zones, and rollover protection.

The fact of the matter is that

“The previous analysis, which examined data through 2016, showed that firearm-related injuries were second only to motor vehicle crashes (both traffic-related and nontraffic-related) as the leading cause of death among children and adolescents, defined as persons 1 to 19 years of age. Since 2016, that gap has narrowed, and in 2020, firearm-related injuries became the leading cause of death in that age group. From 2019 to 2020, the relative increase in the rate of firearm-related deaths of all types (suicide, homicide, unintentional, and undetermined) among children and adolescents was 29.5% — more than twice as high as the relative increase in the general population.”

So outlawing vehicles is not proposed but laws, and regulation to control risk appears to be effective.
