Re:Did Australia Poke a Hole in Your Phone’s Security? on Tuesday January 22, 2019 @10:29PM (#18975416)
In this case it doesn't appear that the government intends to mass-decrypt data, but rather only tap into targeted individuals' communications.

Australia requires companies to provide backdoors. It does not (and can't) require that non-companies do the same. This means every Jihadi with half a brain will be using XMPP with OTR or something like that.

At the same time, it provides a requirement for EMPLOYEES to make backdoors when asked without letting their employers know.

Re:The Taming of the Screw (2000) on Wednesday November 28, 2018 @11:13PM (#18558040)
Remember how Bing Maps had a picture of a classified screw? https://ogleearth.com/2007/08/microsofts-birds-eye-view-catc...
Would be awesome to fit air liquifiers there as well to replenish the coolant. After all, it's a bunch of pumps and radiators.
Something doesn't quite add up. Cessna 172 and Robinson R44 use similarly powered engines for similar payload, same on the the heavy end of transport planes vs transport choppers.
That had nothing to do with binary, wasn't a mini-game and was generally "out there" in terms of complexity. Definitely a good tool to scare children away from programming.
Re:iPhones are allergic to helium on Tuesday October 30, 2018 @11:15PM (#18343079)
You need ~0.2 Bar of oxygen partial pressure. The purpose of Trimix/Heliox is to keep oxygen partial pressure under 1 Bar while also reducing nitrogen to prevent narcosis. You can't breathe the 200m mix at sea level pressure.
That's not actually true, Soyuz re-enter on a very shallow profile, shedding a lot of speed over a lot of time with relatively low G. Additionally, Soyuz is a lifting body, which makes the profile even shallower.

Mercury had 8g deceleration on orbital reentry vs 11-12g on suborbital one.

You can get perhaps a minute of zero g on a MiG-25, that's just not what people ride it for.
4-containing houses and apartments sell for a discount even in Australia. Been to quite a few auctions, 0 Asian punters for 4s vs at least 5 for non-4s. Some apartment buildings are already built without level 4 altogether.
Is there a benefit over just putting it in a boat/coastal building and using water (perhaps pumped from some depth) for cooling?
Re:The Post Meritocracy Manifesto on Friday May 25, 2018 @07:20AM (#17152456)
Clearly you missed the very first point:

>We do not believe that our value as human beings is intrinsically tied to our value as knowledge workers.

You're supposed to be glad this guy wastes your time and money, he has a beautiful personality and deserves to be valued.

Re:Sex Differences in the Adult Human Brain on Thursday May 24, 2018 @02:54AM (#17141624)
This resolves to something like 70% males have larger brains than 70% females.
Re:I am leaving llvm on Friday May 11, 2018 @12:22AM (#17044951)
This sounds very much like you're arguing against female engineering outreach programs and diversity hiring.

Citation needed.

Compared to proteins (20+ amino acids, inclusions of non-aminoacid structures such as heme), yes, quite boring.
Proteins vary wildly in structure, size and chemistry, these things seem to be rather similar so far chemically "boring".
Re:Solved: A Decades-Old Ansel Adams Mystery on Monday April 23, 2018 @01:04AM (#16900646)
A 8x10 camera weighs about 4kg. Adams used smaller formats most of the time, everything he'd need would be under 6-8 kg. I imagine someone like him would not settle for an inferior viewpoint with a easy hike as an alternative.

Re:Chasing fake volume: a crypto-plague on Sunday April 22, 2018 @09:28PM (#16899846)
It's quite obvious that every crypto trader and exchange would check what's not allowed on "real" exchanges and do exactly that.

Most of this drama is stirred up by just two people.
This sounds right, but for me the lucid problem-solving window is too short to be useful. Then I get sleepy and irritated.
Mostly because there are way more programmers working on weaponry of every possible kind than oppressing minorities, and you could say it causes way more harm and suffering.

Also, unlike doctors, who are explicitly trusted with human health, programmers are not in any way different from anybody else and it's silly to try to impose a special moral code on them.

Nuclear weapons simulations, drone AI, smart bombs - all good. But don't you dare abuse a marginalized group!
Amazon already asked Zello, another banned communication app, to stop using their servers to circumvent the Russian ban.

Can't see why they wouldn't shy away here as well.

The shortcuts are signposted, and maps are available to take with you at the entrance - no other big box store does that, so I doubt it has anything to do with fire departments. Impulse buys greatly benefit from immediate commitment, so Ikea does a good job of not having pesky sales assistants everywhere. You have plenty of time to cool off about that silly table till you get to the warehouse.
