It’s not integrated, they are lying
Re:Google Will Turn Off Search for Schools That Reject A.I on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @01:00PM (#50355588)
Years ago Google did the same thing for “safe search”, a url schools could allow.
Time (and transportation) are very real barriers for the working poor, the disabled, and others.
Any friction must be weighed against the harm it seeks to prevent.

There simply is no meaningful intentional voter fraud in the US.

I still don’t understand how meaningful in-person voter impersonation would work.

I’m working as a poll worker for the current US election, and I can’t see how you would do it. We don’t check ID.

Most people don’t have passports. Lots of older people have their licenses expire and don’t renew them.
Well over? It was taken by force about 130 years ago
Re:Moving our warehouse off DuckDB on Monday November 02, 2026 @03:48PM (#50343497)
The query planner / optimizer does not run in the warehouse. One of its primary functions is to predict this stuff.
Re:Moving our warehouse off DuckDB on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:39PM (#50341466)
There is an elastic option, I think . Also, even with a specific warehouse, not every query uses every node in the warehouse.

To me to key “insight” is that if you are going to spin up single VMs (or even groups) per-customer and then route queries, you need to be able to estimate the query cost first.

I know snowflake does this, they do the query optimization before sending it for execution. So it knows about how many resources will be needed (it can obviously be wrong).

Do we need big publishers to own studios?
I’m not sure about that math, but the sentiment is correct, I think. They are getting a smaller slice of a bigger pie.

A perhaps deeper question is what should we give more weight to: absolute wealth, or relative? Past a fairly low threshold people seem to mostly care about relative.

Re:It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:07PM (#50330431)
It normally takes years for a reasonable CEO to have the entire St staff around them to be replaced with sycophants (via natural selection).

AI can do it in a few hours.

I see it as before leaders were assholes in a variety of random ways. Now they are synchronized
That’s too bad, in California it’s all the same:

The ironkey at least has reasonable independent evaluations.
And as the stable coin operators and exchanges grow closer with governments and political elites they will add more and more controls in exchange for legitimacy.
They are already excluded from the financial system.
Also, non white immigrants face discrimination.

People facing racial discrimination can and have overcome it, throughout our history.

People hold out willing non-white immigrants succeeding as proof there is no significant racial discrimination. But this ignores a large selection bias. People who voluntarily immigrate almost always have a great deal of drive and often some resources. Most of them would have been more successful then average if they had stayed in their home country.

The entire social structure of the south was (and mostly still is) based on wealthy whites convincing poor whites to accept the situation because blacks are even worse off.
Everything is America is about race
Re:The $6.3B Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:20AM (#50305180)
I’ve worked places that did a lot of this (not everything, but a lot) from very early on.
Re:The $6.3B Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes on Friday October 30, 2026 @10:57AM (#50304846)
It’s a hard transition, but possible. Obviously less work to do it from the start.
Re:The $6.3B Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes on Friday October 30, 2026 @10:36AM (#50304551)
I assume they would say it regardless

Full zero trust internally. Both inbound and outbound proxies (different machines) to carefully limit access, and provide a place to mitigate attacks. Etc.

If your plan is to quickly apply upstream patches, your plan is bad.

Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:13PM (#50292528)
The query logs and “permission” to crawl are both advantages vs startups.

And putting cache nodes in residential ISPs and exchanges all over the world.
They would need to lure them into the building. They don’t have people to send out all over the country to find and grab someone.
Confabulation is a better term
I think a lot is fixed, but for a fairly short term. So you have roll the debt over (at the new market rates) every 5 to 10 years.
