Re:NFT's aren't the answer to the problems of digital art
on Tuesday November 09, 2021 @11:23AM (#29163765)
This idea of combining NFT and GPG to demonstrate both ownership and authenticity is very intriguing. Would the artist's public GPG key have to be something similar to a verified Twitter account, i.e. some kind of due diligence by a third party that the key actually belongs to a specific person/artist? How would the artist "sign" the artwork with the private GPG key in such a way that the signature wasn't simply duplicated when the digital artifact was copied? Is there a way to combine some identifier from the NFT with the GPG key such that there was a way to cryptographically demonstrate authenticity?

Re:Why free MUNI is not a real solution
on Wednesday January 22, 2020 @04:33PM (#22122285)
The article points out that MUNI has low ridership due to other issues besides cost, namely frequency, safety and predictability. MUNI scores poorly on all of those, so if making it free to ride MUNI doesn't address those issues, or makes them worse, there won't be an increased interest in riding MUNI. (I'm a little baffled why they don't include speed in that list...it's just brutally slow to go any significant distance in San Francisco. Biking is now the fastest way around much of the city.)

Why is there an assumption that the tunnels have to be for cars? Create tunnels for bicycles instead:
- Tunnels don´t need to be nearly as big, and would still have higher capacity
- The friction of ¨I won´t ride a bike because it´s dangerous¨ is reduced or eliminated
- Weather as a factor in commuting by bike is eliminated
- Like a railway grade, you can basically eliminate any significant elevation ascents/descents

Yet more evidence that there is an entire generation in the western world that is incapable of communicating, navigating, planning or discovering anything without a device telling them what to do.
In 50 years, smart phones will be viewed the same way as automobiles are now: a catastrophic mistake from which it's almost impossible to extricate ourselves.

And as one of the comments pointed out, many of the rural states are completely at the mercy of the Federal government. When the Federal government controls 48% of a state's land (Wyoming), yet doesn't allow logging, mining or agricultural activities on most of it, what exactly is the local population supposed to generate revenue from?

That's pretty much how all class-action lawsuits work. You (the victim) get a check for a single-digit dollar amount that isn't worth standing in line at the bank to deposit, and the lawyers/firms on the case make millions. It's how the ABA can claim they're fighting for the little guy.

MySQL is free and has been since its inception. Most developers will always choose (free + good enough) over $10K-per-installation licenses for functionally complete solutions. The same is true of PHP.

Has anyone else noticed that safeway.com doesn't sell their in-store brand of sandwich bread, which usually costs $1.99? You can only buy loaves of bread that are $4.00 or more. Their entire online store is stocked only with crappy, expensive, name-brand items.
So, yeah, in theory you can get your groceries delivered to you, but none of those services are intended for cash-strapped families and/or conscientious shoppers.
The prospect of lugging 4 bags of groceries plus 3 kids on a late, crowded MUNI bus is just sooooo inviting...

Yes, following the news doesn't necessarily cause incivility, but maybe someone should take a look.
