Thanks, done!

I still think it's wrong that HN needs my email address to delete accounts and comments, but yes I finally broke down and did this their way.

I'll miss the good parts of this community, but the selective moderation and toxic flag-or-downvote-truths-i-dont-like-instead-of-discuss-them parts of the community have ruined this site for me.

HN Admins: Please delete my account and my comments.

Sorry to ruin this thread, but this site has no functionality to delete accounts without sending an email which could result in doxxing.

What exactly is the Right to be Forgotten?

The right to be forgotten can be defined as the right of the data subject to erase personal data they don’t want to show up via search engines. It can also mean that they want personal data erased from other directories, but for the most part, we’re talking about search results that show on Google or Bing, for example.

Re:Microsoft is killing WordPad in Windows after 28 years on Saturday September 02, 2023 @07:12PM (#37366282)
It’s actually likely to be the opposite. WordPad could be a test application for the RichTextEdit widget.
Re:Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing on Saturday September 02, 2023 @05:42PM (#37365786)
The tax code is excessively complex to provide loopholes for the wealthy to use to lower their tax burden.
Re:Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing on Saturday September 02, 2023 @05:40PM (#37365767)
That sounds even better.
Re:Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing on Saturday September 02, 2023 @05:38PM (#37365755)
That’s the problem, Roe was an overstepping of the Supreme Court. A law should’ve been passed instead. That is why this Supreme Court ruled the way they did. There was nothing in the Constitution or established law to support Roe.
Re:Microsoft is killing WordPad in Windows after 28 years on Saturday September 02, 2023 @05:32PM (#37365716)
The parser and renderer is a pre-existing RichTextEdit widget. Add menus and save, open, and print functionality and you are over 90% of the way to a WordPad clone.
Re:Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing on Saturday September 02, 2023 @04:04PM (#37365033)
A simple tax code is a simple one for a computer to calculate.

1. Input the taxpayers's income from all taxable sources.

2. Lookup what tax bracket you're in based on that income.

3. Calculate the appropriate tax bill based on that percentage.

4. Subtract that from whatever has already been taxed out of their payroll for the year.

5. Bill them or refund them appropriately.

No humans would need to be part of the process if it were that simple, saving money and making errors less likely. Also, the simpler the tax code is the less computing hours it will require to complete the entire country's taxes, meaning faster refunds and less energy usage. Simpler taxes are even better for the environment!

The Supreme Court overturned Roe because it was a deeply flawed decision. Even former Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg disagreed with it.

How much of a maintenance burden can it possibly be? This seems silly to me.

Not to be cliche, but I literally could write a WordPad clone in an afternoon.

Re:Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing on Saturday September 02, 2023 @03:40PM (#37364824)
I disagree. Cutting all the useless corporate subsidies and pork would allow us to simplify tax filing and the tax code all in one fell swoop. Then we could automate a huge chunk of the IRS and reallocate their employees to other agencies that will serve the tax payers better. It's a win for everyone except corrupt politicians and their corporate masters.
Re:College students are struggling with basic math on Saturday September 02, 2023 @03:37PM (#37364795)
It's still equity if everyone does equally badly in math right?

If they actually fix problems they can't use them for reelection. For example, abortion. The Democrats have had control over the entire government several times, yet they refuse to actually pass a law protecting it at the federal level.

What CPA charges TurboTax prices? I'm talking "standard" TurboTax, not with all the ridiculous upsells that you don't need.

I agree with everyone that it should be a completely unnecessary product, but I don't feel that it is excessively expensive for what it does.

Re:Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing on Saturday September 02, 2023 @02:55PM (#37364377)
Unpopular opinion, but I think a lot of the taxes we pay are excessive and bad. We desperately need a way to cut the pork out of spending bills.

Re:RyujinX – Open Source Nintendo Switch Emulator on Thursday August 31, 2023 @07:27AM (#37335525)
You just answered your own question. :)

Want to play Zelda? You have to pay Nintendo at least $260. $100 more if you want to play on something better than a Switch Lite.

Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo actually makes a profit on their hardware sales as well as game sales.

I disagree. Anabolic steroids can be extremely harmful, even to others as it can cause "road rage." They can also be addictive.

Unpopular opinion around here, but strong hallucinogenic drugs can have negative externalities.

Re:Pay for New Hires Is Shriveling on Wednesday August 30, 2023 @06:08PM (#37329799)
Not everyone is in tech. Most wages have been either stagnant or increased well below actual inflation. Housing, food, and energy costs are way up, far higher than the official inflation numbers imply. Middle class purchasing power is decreasing year on year and people are relying too much on credit to maintain their previous standards of living. It’s all going to come apart once people exhaust their credit.
Re:Pay for New Hires Is Shriveling on Wednesday August 30, 2023 @01:19PM (#37325491)
Welcome to the great reset.

That pesky middle class is always sticking up for their rights and freedoms. Just a little more price inflation and a little more wage stagnation and they’ll be owning nothing and being happy about it right according to the WEF’s plans.

Re:Weight-based motor vehicle tax on Wednesday August 30, 2023 @12:58PM (#37325146)
Not sure why you’re downvoted for pointing this out. Like most recent tax proposals this would disproportionately impact the rural middle class. Farmers and truck drivers would be directly impacted and then these costs would be passed on to consumers.

Those poor enough to receive WIC and EBT payments would have this tax largely subsidized, so it won’t impact them, and the wealthy would barely notice.

Re:Unconditional cash transfers reduce homelessness on Wednesday August 30, 2023 @12:16PM (#37324307)
I think the argument could be made that giving an addict more money means giving them more money for their self destructive addictions, which is ultimately counter productive.

On the flip side, giving them more money could reduce the likelihood they turn to crime to fund their addictions.

Wouldn't a jobs program also help them while bettering society as a whole in the process and possibly teaching them a skill?

It wouldn't have to be hard labor, I'm thinking park beautification or paid internships for skilled jobs that have shortages.

Long term I see "free" money from the government just expanding the class of people that are dependent upon the government for their way of life. The old "teach a man to fish" addage.

Both the CCP and members of the American government that funded risky gain of function research at Wuhan Institute of Virology indirectly through the EcoHealth Alliance have a strong motive to coverup a lab leak as they would be considered culpable in the pandemic.

The wet market theory wouldn't even be seriously considered if it weren't for the messaging by the CCP early on and people being afraid to be labeled "xenophobic" for blaming the pandemic on the irresponsible poor safety practices that were called out in the article I linked to earlier in this thread.

Given all the evidence and ignoring the official narratives of those with something to hide, the likelihood of an accidental lab leak from WIV is overwhelming in comparison to the wet market theory where it just coincidentally appeared out of thin air in the city of Wuhan with no prior animal reservoir ever found.

Zortech actually went through several iterations and is still available in the form of the Digital Mars C and C++ developement system.

Unfortunately it looks like the X32 DOS extender link on the page below is dead.

https://www.digitalmars.com/

It can be both not genetically engineered and a lab leak at the same time.

We study dangerous pathogens in labs all the time. All it takes is a laboratory accident for it to escape containment.

“Two years before the novel coronavirus pandemic upended the world, U.S. Embassy officials visited a Chinese research facility in the city of Wuhan several times and sent two official warnings back to Washington about inadequate safety at the lab, which was conducting risky studies on coronaviruses from bats.”
