you should look at the r/palestine if you want see manifestation of hatred. or any heavily left leaning subs.
except prepping mostly isn't "I got mine, screw you" but "I need to protect myself and my family". even then, US society isn't even "I got mine, screw you". I don't understand where that even came from because its not even close to true. maybe europeans thinking they're somehow more collectivist even though I've found Americans to be far more friendly and collectivist than europeans.
The article doesn't even mention his religion/beliefs which is odd despite saying
> They are shamelessly moralistic, written on the basis of exhaustive literary theory, linguistics, geography and world-building, and quite devoid of social commentary or Empsonian irony
yes, because it was a heavily catholic work.
> This mythology, he felt, must “reflect and contain in solution elements of moral and religious truth” but must lack all explicit reference to the Christian religion or the “real” world as we know it
This is especially true though and undersold. Tolkien's catholicism had an immeasurable impact on his writing and LOTR. he wrote: "[LOTR was a] fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision. That is why I have not put in, or have cut out, practically all references to anything like ‘religion’, to cults or practices, in the imaginary world. For the religious element is absorbed into the story and the symbolism."
his works are absolutely beautiful.
have you read the article? youth unemployment rate is far higher with many, even in STEM degrees, struggling to get any jobs. social pressure to succeed academically is far higher in China and there is nothing equivalent in the US. 996 culture is an insane concept. censorship in entertainment is pervasive. rampant sexism.
its easy to say "oh yea the US has these problems too" but it is 1000x worse in China, and its extremely privileged to even try and say its the same as in the US. The cultures are so incredibly different in every single way.
it definitely screws with incentives. the success of a military or superpower is ultimately in deterrence, but lack of direct conflict makes people think less of or think the military is useless. its like people thinking their door locks are useless because they haven't observed someone trying to break in. or thinking a fire extinguisher is useless because they've never been in a fire and had to use it.
when social media, and media as a whole, fuels "america bad" rhetoric and with russian propaganda of "american imperialism" combined with no active conflicts where the US is threatened, its no surprise.
but I don't think its about people not supporting state-sanctioned violence, because many support US assistance to ukraine and other allies and understand the defensive nature of it.
likely it was just the incompetance of afghanistan and iraq occupation that messed people up. the gulf war was a massive success, at home and for kuwait (sans gulf war syndrome due to iraqi chemical weapons). when we are pushed into another conflict, OPTEMPO increases, we are united against a common enemy, confidence will increase.
no I won't eat less meat. another classic case of shifting the blame onto the individual instead of the hugely inefficient and wasteful processes and industries; its just carbon footprint BS 2.0. shaming people into believing their habits are causing apparently world-ending apocalyptic events isn't a good way to get people on your side, nor is it a good way to actually try and solve issues. it just makes people feel worse like the world is ending (it really isnt). doomerism is a disease.
> First, the argument that electric vehicles are more expensive than comparable combustion cars is somewhat exaggerated. The issue large stems from the decision to electrify only the most profitable and physically largest models. For Ford, that would be the F-150 Lightning and the Mustang Mach-E.
so the argument is correct, in that they are more expensive? so they should make cheaper, smaller electric cars would be the logical next step. electric cars at this point are a luxury item, and saying people cant afford luxury items because they aren't being paid enough is _technically true_ but that is misleading.
maybe they should start blaming poor fiscal policy of the federal government given the govt is meant to look after its people, not automanufacturers.
It allows for even more targeted phishing/scams and lowers the bar of entry required to do this and the difficulty of doing this at scale. the human element is a pretty common entry point.
do you think the same for fish tanks? that when kids see fish tanks they think its OK to capture animals for their own amusement? What an insanely biased POV. zoos are fantastic for conservation and giving kids a view into a world beyond the one in which they live day-to-day.
if you think about it, its actual insanity. The fears are all from science fiction with absolutely no grounding in reality. There are legitimate concerns about the unethical mass harvesting of data but if you think about "AI safety" vs something like vehicular safety or spacecraft safety its kind of nuts, because the latter are grounded in reality and have formal specifications which need to be met. But AI safety is so wishy-washy.
Take a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Motor_Vehicle_Safety_S...
You'd think if people are so scared about AI being apocalyptic it would have some strict regulation similar to vehicle standards but its not even close, nor is it in the conversation at all. Its just pure fear from science fiction and the govt putting out performative press releases. What the fuck even is "AI" anyway? it means different things to different people. It could mean a self checkout at a supermarket, or a bank's AML, or some super intelligence. there are basically no standard definitions of anything to do with "AI" anywhere and every single piece of regulation is equally as vague. Companies like having it be a vague term because its marketing so the actual experts don't care about changing it
one of my favorites is the rainbow serpent
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Serpent in australian aboriginal culture. pretty crazy how snakes and serpents are so pervasive in mythology globally.
> The Rainbow Serpent came from beneath the ground and created huge ridges, mountains, and gorges as it pushed upward. The Rainbow Serpent is understood to be of immense proportions and inhabits deep permanent waterholes and is in control of life's most precious resource, water. In some cultures, the Rainbow Serpent is considered to be the ultimate creator of everything in the universe
You touched on a disturbing point. People like to imagine that some govt will wield to indoctrinate the populace, but it is more likely this kind of tool would be used for marketing or advertisement. look at how many people gladly work for FANG/whatever companies and develop tools just to supercharge advertisement but see no moral issues with it. as long as they're making money, and a lot of money, who cares right?
I mean advertisements already are basically brainwashing right? quirky jingles or catch phrases associated with some food or product, that stick in your head.
agree. the technology is exceptionally useful and banning it doesn't stop already corrupt LEO from fudging evidence. they should be removed entirely. individually, many forms of evidence in forensic science are complete BS but as part of a whole they add value. its the same with facial recognition. this is just a kneejerk reaction that sounds good on headlines and for politics but doesn't actually help anyone.
except people need food to survive? you don't need gambling. thats why its fine to ban. you're jsut engaging in a very bad faith argument since they aren't even close to equivalent.
100% success matters when you need to hit a launch window for interplanetary transit. or when you have spacecraft that are integrating sensors from dozens of commercial and academic partners. 100% success matters when rockets are actually launching payloads. what is the evidence that this fail fast method is superior to the already tried and tested method? everyone just assumes that. the differences between spx starship and SLS go far beyond just that method anyway so you cannot possibly compare
especially when you have great words like
눈물 = 눈 + 물 = eye + water = tears
물고기 = 물 + 고기 = water + meat = fish (although this only means the animal, not the food, which is weird. 생선 is the fish meat like cow v beef)
돼지고기 = 돼지 + 고기 = pig + meat = pork
etc.
there is a lot of other examples I'm forgetting but its cool.
The modification of the verb root to denote tense and formality as well is pretty intuitive. Korean is a great language. The problematic things IMO are the counting of items and the uses of the Korean v Chinese number systems, plus the random Hanja here and there.
When you have a Dungeons and Dragons movie hitting over 100mil in the box office, and when comic book movies are some of the highest grossing, i think its pretty safe to say nerd culture is incredibly mainstream.
Because those games are just a way to measure how an internal state changes with moves initiated by the ego and initiated by someone else. The point is that there is no consistant internal state because it hallucinates and spotaneously changes. its like telling the language model a story, and getting it to repeat certain facts about it or you make additions to the story. its the exact same thing. It needs quite a lot of "prompt engineering" to push it in the correct direction, and even then its frequently incorrect.
isn't that the author replying to a reply on their tweet? so its promoting positive discussion, hence pushing the engagement higher?
What will happen to Spaceport Cornwall then, if Virgin Orbit shuts down? Seems like a massive waste of investment then since I don't think any launch provider will take its place. Pretty grim for the UK space launch industry as a whole.
You frame it like its a bad thing when it very much isn't; the Iranian people deserve to be freed of the current tyranny under which they struggle. A more western-aligned Iran would be best for its people and for the entire Middle East. It also doesn't negate the brave efforts of the people there protesting the regime.
eh I think its not as black-or-white. The Elder Scrolls lore is inconsistent but that is chalked up to unreliable narrators. Used in the right amount, I think slight contradiction in worldbuilding is good, and it also reduces the burden on the worldbuilder for every tiny detail to be factually consistent.
Why is this here? This is just Chinese government propaganda.
Isn't this situation the entire purpose of Signal..? Don't they already operate in the most authoritarian countries in the world? I don't understand why they would walk.
Honestly this my favorite type of startup: a small company trying to do something insane, previously restricted to very large and resource-rich companies. Actually disruptive.
Jim Keller is still CEO of Tenstorrent right? If so then is this Jim vertically integrating in a way? I don't know much about Grayskull tbh, but this would make sense.
Honestly any kind of obsession with Musk is weird, and this is included. What happened to the exodus of people leaving Twitter for Mastodon saying Twitter's collapse was imminent? I've seen people coming back after making such a dramatic event of it. I've been using Twitter throughout all of this and honestly nothing has actually changed. It's just so weird people so obsessed with Musk, even hating him with such fervor and putting him under this weird hyper scrutiny.
unlocked ring? the ring buffers are lock free. I'm not sure it stands for userspace since the ring buffers are shared between kernel and userspace, thats the core of io_uring, so that seems kind of misleading.
I guess the burden of proof for being a flight risk is reasonbly high? Which makes sense? As long as the bail amount is reasonable for the individual (its not too much that they cannot afford, but its enough of an incentive for them to reappear in court), it seems fine? I think at the level of wealth of SBF/the level of wealth of his network, declaring him a flight risk kinda makes more sense and denying bail. I dunno law though.
Precious space? Its a pretty big continent.
