Re:Reddit is buying TikTok rival Dubsmash on Monday December 14, 2020 @12:18PM (#25420143)
It works as a content rip-off machines, which is exactly what it was designed for...

but yeah in a vacuum it blows

Re:Bitcoin has a stale chain of length 2 on Thursday November 12, 2020 @12:48PM (#25072465)
Two reason why on BTC it doesn't.

1. Longer block times, so it is pretty rare that multiple miners are finding multiple valid consecutive blocks to compete on separate chains

2. It is against their incentives. By being apart of the losing chain, they have used thousands in hash power and missed out on possible tens of thousands that would come from the valid chain.

>What's Bitcoin's excuse? Where is the technical limitation?

Block propagation? Non-shit 2nd layer? If all BTC transactions fees only cost .00001 USD to settle and that was consistent you think it wouldn't be more widely adopted? Fees are clearly a function of technical limitation.

Great analysis

It's like he forgot that one of the major "features" of cryptocurrency is a quality that proliferates the sphere with scammers.

I say this as someone with a very optimistic outlook, edge case usage is both the pinnacle and the opposite of virtue, we would do well to not forget the dark side.

We need to keep it at "hopefully will solve problems" and leave it at that.

Tether is probably not backed 1:1, but at the same time I believe it is closer to 1:1 than it is to 0:1 just because the entity that runs it is literally a money-printing machine (Bitfinex is extraordinarily profitable) and there is evidence for some large quantity of people using Tether (they had 500m seized no?)

End of the day imo crypto is still a small fish when we look at the absolute numbers comparative to stocks. Manipulation is expected to a certain degree but I still lean towards a positive correlation in perceived value and price. Also I believe it is treated the same as every other market, fake it until you make it or implode.

I mean I view it very much like Tesla in that in only gets is value from the "possible end state", but the reality is that BTC doesn't need much capital in the schema of the financial world to multiple even at current levels.

Re:Chrome phasing out support for User-Agent on Wednesday March 25, 2020 @02:23PM (#22687097)
Same... I've been played.
I mean first off that is only in comparison to a dosage schedule of the reverse amount.

I'm just arguing that it would make more sense to start at 80-110-140-170 etc because below that is placebo.

Re:Young people in U.S. dying at high rates on Wednesday November 27, 2019 @04:59PM (#21652586)
Eh I disagree for a multitude of reasons, first is that I really don't agree with the government assumed line of "what is poverty" and I seriously doubt that is the first thing that jumps into everyone's mind when they say people around them are "impoverished". Strictly speaking for 2018, 13064 is the official poverty line for an individual with no dependents below the age of 65. You can easily make above the poverty line working those jobs above, but working minimum wage is quite frankly poverty level in my mind, even 50% more would be pushing it.

Secondly there are additional items that are necessary for this next generation that I don't believe are really accounted for. A lack of good internet access in the form of a smartphone or pc is a literal handicap, if someone can't justify affording that, I would very much consider them impoverished. Time is literal money and denying the most advanced tool in our day and age that will save you large amounts of time/money is poor from my perspective.

Yes I realize this measures something else, but it is rather opaque, and it fails to account for other things like debt.

75-125 is an actual trip. Anything less than that you're not going to get the full psychedelic experience. We can debate the effects of microdosing, but 100-150ug has been a gold standard for decades for a reason.
Everyone is saying meditation etc, I would disagree. A major part is the ability to put this experience in motion/action which I find counterintuitive to meditation. Quite frankly no, I do not think it is replicable to be able to turn off the filters in which are responsible for keeping the raw data to a manageable level, that is much different than increasing your sensitivity through deprivation. Alteration of brain chemistry may be simulated in the future, but there is no replacement today.
Re:PayPal stops payouts to models on Pornhub on Friday November 15, 2019 @10:58AM (#21545851)
to expand on the "replacing"

there is a mechanism called replace by fee, so it becomes a question of incentives

The payment processors can scan the mempool for transactions that would invalidate the initial transaction, so then it would be a question of lead time. Great for digital services etc, not so great for in life purchases.

So if you absolutely 100% need confirmation, then yeah 10 minutes is what you need to wait, but that again is a question of probability comparative to credit card chargebacks/fees etc.

Even the next block inclusion isn't a guarantee... it just means that you have at current prices approximately 200k insurance. With enough resources and luck, someone could +EV roll back your transaction, but the cost scales exponentially.

The current viable solution for small inperson transactions is pretty much replicating the banking system. Current versions of abstracting the banking system into something decentralized are clunky/buggy to say the least.

Re:The trillion-dollar lawsuit against Tether on Friday November 15, 2019 @10:41AM (#21545710)
It doesn't, exchange data is heavily manipulated in order to game certain resources like coinmarketcap, coingecko etc. I would agree tether is more but nowhere close to as described. Dividing by a factor of 10 wouldn't even be enough imo.
Re:The trillion-dollar lawsuit against Tether on Monday November 04, 2019 @03:08PM (#21445905)
Since November 18, just saying that is a far cry from "no demand" as stated by the top comment.

Isn't there 400m+ of audited USDC in circulation?

More consumers begets more producers. I would assert you have better odds of producing in a wide variety of areas.

Re:Duffel (YC S18) raises $30M for flight booking API on Monday October 28, 2019 @04:39PM (#21381397)
I mean I feel like "need" is a bad choice, when the point is that it can be a lot better. I didn't need Venmo to send money to friends, but it is quite clearly better than pre-existing options. Also there are plenty of shitty banks out there with their own insular network and plenty of money they are working with. What options do you have in the Middle East per say?
I got this blue pill I want to sell you :)

Re:Making My Own Glasses on Friday October 04, 2019 @01:46PM (#21160075)
Well FYI, cyl is generally converted into minus cyl, the axis flips 180. So your first two measurements of cyl are close together.

Also cyl/sphere differential is also hard to determine but often follows a pattern in that you can overcompensate in sphere for cyl and vice versa.

Not even going to begin to go into the effects of possible tolerance differential, prism imbalance, and that is just with Single Vision Lenses.

Also you generally have 90 days as industry standard to go back and retest your RX.

Re:Huawei Mate 30 phones launch without Google apps on Thursday September 19, 2019 @01:07PM (#21018225)
A lot of judgement on a semantic that is generally accepted to be the exact opposite of what you are declaring. First given the context of the root of the word "cide", patricide, regicide, matricide, a majority of people still believe that the word predicates physical/biological harm in the form of death. If you want to expand the definition, fine but it isn't truth or the majority. If anything you should find a better word.
94EH and close to 50TH for top of the line equipment.

Even if we were extremely generous would be a billion in hardware at the very least (I am assuming $500 manufacturing cost)

Hash rate is 90+m terahash and increasing, good luck R&Ding the chips and obtaining enough to achieve. Retail pricing is around 3k per 50 TH/s, and that is just for hardware.
> How much arrogance does it take for a bunch of Googlers to assume the belief that they know what is "just" for the rest of the world?

That of a regular human being with rationalized opinions through the lens available to them? For some reason only because Google has a lot of power to control the dialogue you ask them to bury their head in the sand? Or are we going to pretend that there hasn't been an arms race of sorts to game search results across nearly every topic and as such one might consider removal of what one considers to either be harmful, false, or manipulative to be a part of doing the "right" job?

What's the quote again, " The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing " -- Edmund Burke

And as far as Google goes, I think it would be easy to rationalize that (if I was a Google member) I have access to better tools than most to make a decision (more information).

Re:Bitcoin expert scams a scammer, donates the money to charity on Wednesday August 07, 2019 @05:19PM (#20639209)
I sure they have their ways. With online digital currency trading (online games) I know crypto is generally the preferred method of payment. There probably exist unique ways to liquidate it into USD or Bolivars
Cool story, but I don't see how your example has anything to do with anything previously mentioned. Obviously the entire point the prior statement is that we are applying rewards to "states" rather than actually applying it to any productivity metric.
Re:Sia – Decentralized cloud storage network on Tuesday July 16, 2019 @11:18PM (#20456115)
Same argument for Bitcoin, cash etc. You have a thousand degrees of slippery slope in what constitutes "enable". Does paying your workers in cash for tips enable tax evasion?

Also, I'm not sure what scenario in which you would be able to find the encryption key, yet not have access to the wallet controlling the contracts? Even if you did, I'm not sure why hosts could not assist in cancelling contracts in a similar fashion to cloud providers taking down content on request.

Re:Dear Google, I'm Blocking You from My Website on Wednesday July 10, 2019 @01:28PM (#20404212)
But at the same time I'm not convinced that the greater reason for this is with easier access to creating internet content we are not simply creating too much garbage to filter out all of it. It is always easier to break a system than build a bulletproof one right? I am under the impression that we are just returning to the mean of too much garbage content that is simply trying to sell something.
Re:Why Discord Is Wrong on Tuesday July 09, 2019 @05:53PM (#20397049)
In-game voice chat has always been hot garbage on nearly every game that I have tried in comparison to 3rd party, Expecting the standard to rise for games when there is very little incentive to do so (you are not going to get sizably more players on good voice chat) and at the same time expect it for not just one game, but all of them?

Also why would one want to readjust voice settings for friends on each and every platform? I don't want X amount of configs that I have to adjust for my laptop/desktop and/or when the games inevitably undergo a major patch and decide to hard reset all the settings for no discernible reason.

That isn't even touching the fact that discord is not only dominate in voice base services, but it is aggressively expanding simply as a messaging service as well. Channels of permanence, aggregation of content and communities, high powered bot services, Discord isn't just games anymore. Server personalization with Nitro features is definitely a great play and imo this take severely underestimates the importance of communities outside the gaming sphere.

edit: Check out a bunch of major subreddits and they will have Discords, people are already cutting out FB and a combination of pseudo-anonymity and personal community feel and you have Discord taking a slice of FB groups, hell I recently pivoted my music chat-groups to Discord, I don't even see why they won't eventually pivot to take bites out of Slack (I would assume they already are even without doing anything serious), hell for more certain tech-oriented groups it serves as the official platform of communication due to ease of accessibility and moderation tools.

Well unfortunately the prevailing mentality seems to be why bother when someone else will do it for you out of mutual shared interest.
