Re:Email and Git = <3 on Thursday October 12, 2023 @06:48PM (#37864153)
The amount of "gotchas" in this process and the tooling required just to use git + email seems insane to me. If it works for you, great, but I don't expect a new hire (experienced or not) to pickup this flow and run with it.
Re:California DMV will issue car titles as NFTs on Tuesday April 11, 2023 @01:25PM (#35528245)
Tracking physical assets with NFTs will not end well, no way (that I have seen) to ensure the ownership is in sync. I've attempted to find out more in the past, see this thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29271460, but the answers were not confidence inspiring and missed the point. There are services that claim to do this, however there is no guarantee that the person selling an asset needs to mention there's an NFT associated with the ownership of it.
Re:Tinder Is Working on a $500 Subscription on Thursday April 06, 2023 @04:25PM (#35473900)
If you're paying $500 / month, what incentive does Tinder have to find you a lasting partner? That is assuming finding a long term relationship is the goal, which it not the case all the time. That being said, I don't have any alternate pricing models in mind, pricing / monetization is hard.
If there wasn't "The Office" to begin with, then what would people use to specify their version of "The Office"? Or how would that idea of "The Office" become popular in the first place for people to want to create their own version (Assuming the tools were in place to generate your own content)? I think there's a lot of value in communicating about shared ideas, eg people love to talk about movies/shows/etc, there's whole communities around a shared idea. I'm curious to see how individualized content impacts this.

I think services like Geek Squad fill this need

ChatGPT has made up sources when I've asked for them, so I wouldn't 100% trust it to provide great sources. Also, if ChatGPT just redirects you to search, doesn't that remove most of the value?
Re:The golden era of being an open startup is gone on Friday February 03, 2023 @06:51PM (#34649559)
Totally agree, it is odd that the author of the article labeled "open startups" as a movement. I can see why they did so, labeling it as a movement improves the story, makes you a "thought leader", etc, which all leads to better marketing / sales.
Re:Want anonymity? Make a persona not a mystery on Friday February 03, 2023 @06:31PM (#34649361)
"A persona requires misrepresentation, which is not the same as de facto anonymity."

I don't this this is correct, as a persona can accurately represent you, its just a persona. If you want to continue to be anonymous with a persona that represents you, I think differential privacy could help in this situation.

Re:Notes on Web3 on Friday November 19, 2021 @03:44PM (#29282198)
My question remains, how do you ensure the physical item ownership is kept up to date with ownership of the NFT? Even if that is in the terms of service, someone could still steal an item, making the NFT ownership and physical item ownership out of sync.
Re:Notes on Web3 on Thursday November 18, 2021 @06:07PM (#29271765)
How do you ensure the ownership of the physical item is kept in line with the ownership of the NFT? Eg if the physical owner sold or gifted the item or it was stolen? It seems like the NFT is likely to have incorrect information over time.

For myself, it comes down to form factor. I don't like wearing watches, but I am OK with wearing rings.
Re:Google Decides to Monetize Maps on Friday April 19, 2019 @02:38PM (#19701880)
I find this comment super interesting, I assume alerting you to the vitamin shop is an ad, but its also a feature that differentiates gmaps from other mapping services. It also feels like a less creepy form of advertising as it is obvious why they are letting you know about the vitamin shop, as it is location dependent and directly relevant to your directions.

From what I can tell, they are NOT universal or existential quantifiers, as those symbols are also used in the post. I think they are

My 2 cents: only have one resume and one LinkedIn profile. Follow the advice the parent post gave. Make it clear what your skills are. Not sure where you live, but the Bay Area is full of places looking for engineers, apply to companies there

You say that houses tend to have a reasonable expectation of privacy, but not internet services, why is that? Possibly because they keep their logs? I don't understand why we should not have reasonable expectation of privacy for our internet activity. Seems like we could have a reasonable expectation of privacy if internet services don't keep their logs. So intent might be there, but one could view their lack of logs as upholding our privacy, not hiding criminal activities.
Re:150 days of living and coding in a van on Tuesday October 10, 2017 @07:45PM (#15446190)
That is correct that he says he doesn't use a washer or dryer, however it is incorrect to saw that he washes and reuses them with the information provided. He says it takes less water to make the clothes than to wash them, not that he actually washes them. In fact, he says he donates his used clothing, not mentioning if they have been washed or not.
Re:Reported difficulties getting help on Equifax's phone lines on Wednesday September 13, 2017 @03:41PM (#15241862)
With experian, I have done the following:

- Call membership number -> makes some noise and then hangs up

- Use their website that they promote in their automated messages -> when trying to set up an alert, it takes you to a loading page that does nothing (looking at the requests being made in the network tab, it fails to load bootstrap and then just sits there, I am able to download the script it fails to download)

- Call automated fraud number -> nothing happens after being transferred to their automated alert system, so I hung up -> called again and waited for a few minutes after being transferred to their automated alert system, finally a voice starts talking asking for info (a dark pattern if I've ever seen one). After going through the process, apparently my info wasn't correct, so they asked me to 'leave a voicemail' with my SSN and DOB, after providing that info, it said they couldn't save my info and to try again, then promptly hung up.

so haven't been able to set up a fraud alert yet

H2O.ai has been around for a years so the title confused me, maybe project name spacing should be a thing

A few questions if you don't mind. What percent of your after tax income was rent? Are you making the same salary in Michigan? And what is the percent of your after tax income is rent now? Thanks! I would love to work remote / in a cheaper location, but salary decrease is worrying me.
Re:The Open Logic Project on Tuesday July 28, 2015 @07:23PM (#9965211)
Well logic is a sub-category of philosophy, not mathematics. Logic and math are similar in some ways, but logic != math. Both contain lots of symbols and formal methods of getting from a to b, however the content is quite different. There is overlap however in mathematical logic, but again, logic systems != math.
