Re:Ask HN: Why won't you quit a job you hate? on Monday February 17, 2020 @08:17PM (#22352590)
Had a similar experience especially as I age and moved farther from the "Big city" where the cool jobs are and I refuse to commute that far

Re:On Semicolons and the Rules of Writing on Saturday July 14, 2018 @09:21PM (#17533329)
Shouldn't that be "On Semicolons; the rules of writing" ?
Re:What's the history behind 192.168.1.1? on Friday July 06, 2018 @06:46PM (#17475696)
Or your home is in a hotel but you walk down to the cafe ... should you renumber ?
Re:Defeat your 99th percentile with speculative task on Saturday April 14, 2018 @06:29PM (#16839928)
Wonder if for certain requests that are guaranteed to return smallish data sizes, having Redis support UDP would make sense and remove the TCP issues ...
So now the companies will start selling "leases" to printer cartridges ?
All I want is an automatic popup on my phone when I approach the register to scan my card details with samsung pay rather than have to slide up apps, use my thumbprint to unlock and wave the damn thing around madly

Currently I use it because of the novelty but it's actually more difficult for me than a physical card

Re:An Alternative Approach to Rate Limiting on Friday April 14, 2017 @06:27PM (#14117902)
The racy code can behave very poorly based on some tests I did of my very first attempts at this !
Probably the founders took millions off the table at each funding round while denying this opportunity to the rank and file
Slightly up
Re:One month after launch on Monday February 13, 2017 @11:44PM (#13641207)
Yeah "pay what you want" definitely makes me feel uncomfortable
Re:How much does employee turnover really cost? on Wednesday January 25, 2017 @07:05PM (#13487462)
This has I think been known for a long time and can be seen @ the bottom of Maslows hierarchy of need
Re:The .NET Core 2 Wave on Wednesday January 25, 2017 @12:16PM (#13483375)
At least as of a month or so ago it was plainly obvious that Mac is a third level supported platform here.
Re:Alexa: Amazon's Operating System on Wednesday January 04, 2017 @06:56PM (#13323345)
I will never say OK Google (except when saying I will never say OK Google). Gross
Re:About Those Air Cushions in Amazon Packages on Thursday December 29, 2016 @05:12PM (#13280622)
It's more like

Don't recyclers have to sort submissions anyway? It's expected that citizens will "completely fail" to adhere to recycling instructions and submissions must be sorted anyway.

Re:Why I Studied Full-Time for 8 Months for a Google Interview on Tuesday December 20, 2016 @05:28PM (#13224824)
He's definitely not fictitious as I've met him and have seen a presentation from him and his co-founder about one of their startups...

The motivations I couldn't speculate on though

Re:Bill seeks to put porn block on computers sold in SC on Monday December 19, 2016 @04:16PM (#13215040)
Funny that he didnt suggest the computer have a blocking function for anything that mentions guns either ... I'm sure there's a big problem with that upstate too...

Re:Waymo: Google's self-driving car company on Tuesday December 13, 2016 @02:54PM (#13170287)
And what is Trumps so special plan for them I wonder ?
This seems like a pretty short-sighted view of the issue. Take a look outside the US for many ways this can be and is done
Re:What Makes a Senior Software Developer? on Monday December 12, 2016 @07:54PM (#13163574)
To me, the chain from developer to senior to lead to principal etc is mostly driven by the desire to change from being "reactive" to "proactive" and offloading other people (higher and parallel etc) in the chain.
Re:How We Knew It Was Time to Leave the Cloud on Monday November 14, 2016 @02:00PM (#12952303)
I think when people say "Add more machines to scale" they more often mean more worker-type machines all doing independent tasks or smaller pieces of a large

Not continuing to link ever-increasing sets of machines to each other in a big glob ... thats much harder to make work in the cloud

If I had $104M in the bank I'd put it as the caption on the top of my resume "Spent three years in federal prison..."
Re:All you wanted to know about ‘all-hands’ meetings on Tuesday October 11, 2016 @02:57PM (#12687474)

Re:Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Time (2012) on Monday October 10, 2016 @03:23PM (#12679229)
Not sure for sure but August is probably the least rainy/nasty month in England
Or maybe people in India wont put up with the sort of crap we somehow do here in the US
Re:Now it’s exploding Samsung washing machines on Tuesday October 04, 2016 @08:04PM (#12640657)
"What more could reasonably be expected of Samsung?"

Goodness knows, I'm sure making a noisy beeping sound, printing "Load too heavy/unbalanced" on the LCD and refusing to run would be totally unreasonable ?

Yup. Canceled my pre-order when I saw this and got a $60 regular DVD player for now
