Re:AI is removing the middle class of software engineering on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @05:13PM (#49278632)
When? The specific years and locations matter greatly, there's always been a boom and bust aspect to it.
I suspect it depends on the kid. If they are naturally frugal and saving for things (and the household doesn't need the money), then why bother.

If they aren't frugal, and are otherwise suffering from lifestyle creep, then not charging them might be an injustice and setting them up for false expectations/never leaving home.

FYI, I was in the first group because my first job had pay cuts within 2 weeks, and then I discovered I basically spent minimal time at home anyway, so why pay more for it. Let me buy when I wanted to move out.

Yes, I was in college and it took me a while to realize I needed to actually turn on the news, because all the mainstream websites were wrong.

Oddly enough, neither of my classes were cancelled, despite being only a little over 2 hours down 95 from NYC.

That's a very common problem, it's not a well defined and clearly visible definition.
That seems to be based on the assumption that coal is easily accessible. I'm not sure that's true.

Never heard that second one, which part of PA? I'm Philly burbs.

Considering the site we are, treat your effort/time debt as tech debt.

You appear to be past the point where it's beneficial, and should focus on reducing it to improve your life. Granted this is easily stated when I have no real context.

I'm fairly sure he'd have the same response if you asked them "who's a good lion" in the same tone of voice.

*I tried hard to find an animal they wouldn't know. My initial thought of cat was more likely to fail.

Re:AI Is a Horse (2024) on Friday January 23, 2026 @11:44AM (#46734628)
That's moving away from the actual horse analogy. If you can tell a guide dog to take you somewhere, you can tell a horse that too.

Granted, a journey to a new location would make this accurate.

Re:Coursera to combine with Udemy on Wednesday December 17, 2025 @03:51PM (#46305341)
Oddly enough, UC Berkley is public education, so it's the federal government and state government. At least technically true.
Re:What happened to Transmeta, the last big dotcom IPO on Wednesday November 12, 2025 @11:26AM (#45902092)
I recall a coworker being excited several years ago about catching someone lying about their linux experience before their interview. If what they said was true, they'd have to have been working on it during it's first year.

He was then excited after the interview because the individual had been working at transmeta with Linus, and his resume was accurate. He didn't end up working with us, but I wasn't privy to any additional information.

Re:The Top Programming Languages 2025 on Wednesday September 24, 2025 @10:00AM (#45360533)
If they're talking about Cobol, it's usually systems originating before the early 90s that haven't been completely rewritten.

J2EE would be late 90s and 2000s.

Re:The Top Programming Languages 2025 on Wednesday September 24, 2025 @09:56AM (#45360481)
It's still there at the accounting/backend level. Automated Financial Systems Level 3 and it's replacement Vision are commercial loan systems.

LVL3 is pure cobol. It has been recently deprecated but there are many banks who own the code and are still self hosting it, along with it's IBM green screen support.

Vision is a java front end in front of an updated cobol backend. When your reputation is based on your reliability and long term code stability, at what point do you risk making the conversion, versus training new developers to work on your system.

Re:Glow-in-the-dark houseplants shine in rainbow of colours on Wednesday September 03, 2025 @01:13PM (#45118234)
If they've done the research to figure out what combination is durable and safe for the plants, then there is certainly some science there.

It's certainly more of an entertaining story than pushing the bounds of knowledge.

Re:Ask HN: Is your company still hiring junior engineers? on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @02:30PM (#45107140)
2/ out of 3 of the last batch of software development interns were hired.

I don't think we had any last summer.

The one individual in our current batch still has another year of school left, but I'm fairly sure they've earned an offer if they want one.

I don't have as much visibility in the IT and security interns, just my department.

How do you look something up?
My understanding is the most deadly/destructive parts of hurricanes are usually:

1. the storm surge, the potential wall of water brought by the continuous winds and waves near the shore, followed by 2. the flooding from heavy rains, then 3. followed by the wind.

So your example might also be hitting the same issue you're trying to avoid.

Note, the worst storm surge is from the eye towards the side where the winds are blowing in the direction of the shore. That's only part of the area with the peak winds.

The last part is accurate, but equating the two is a bit of stretch. The democrats went out their way to do everything by the book. They also generally took the time to understand the systems they were working with.

The current presidency went in with the assumption that everything was wasteful, and didn't take the time to understand what they were cutting. Hence, emergency rehires, judicial blocks on firing, etc.

The amount of noise about it was the same, but the root causes and support are far from equivical.

Validating facts is good too.

If the steak is blue and they ordered medium ... then there is little room for debate. If they wanted something other than what they ordered, then validating the feelings is more appropriate.

Re:Small Town America vs. Big Box Stores on Wednesday April 09, 2025 @12:10PM (#43633695)
Or open up more stores then the region can support, remove the local competition, and then close theirs stores as uncompetitive. The small town (population < 2000) my Mom grew up in is currently supporting their IGA as well as the Dollar Store, but my understanding is that they're in better shape then a lot of their small town neighbors.

One or two successful businesses makes a huge difference at that level. If something happened to their one large employer, a food factory, then they'd really be in trouble. The other businesses are restaurant sized at the largest.

Re:Java 24 on Tuesday March 18, 2025 @11:09AM (#43400380)
That has as much to do with Oracle lawyers and ambiguous licensing issues as anything else.
Paraphrased quote from one of my professors years ago:

Writing readable perl is easy, just code it like it's LISP.

Granted, he was working with it in AI/bioinformatics.

One of my classmates who moved into the IT/management side of things historically got much quicker responses from the dev team whenever he volunteered to code something, as he was always going to do it in perl.

Re:An elusive California mammal has just been photographed alive on Wednesday February 05, 2025 @05:07PM (#42955971)
I had a northern short tailed shrew running around my basement. After luckily live catching it (and getting the correct id), I also discovered that they are mildly venomous. Go figure.

Wish it hadn't found a way into the house, as I would have liked to have it keep clearing pests out of my yard. It got dropped off else where quickly, after a snack.

Deer are common in many suburbs.
Re:Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals on Wednesday December 04, 2024 @05:02PM (#42322536)
The average apartment in a moderate-cost area is 5833 per month? Where is that number coming from?

The average rent for an apartment in the United States is between $1,559 and $1,748 per month, depending on the source (google AI). This would be $21000 per year in rent.

Per capita energy usage is an interesting choice of metric.

You seem to have read that backwards. A greater percentage of woman were accepted.
