How do you remember this with such clarity?! Amazing.

I don’t want to be taxed for someone else’s burrito taxi.
Re:macOS 27 Golden Gate: The Ars Technica Review on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @05:23PM (#49733215)
It is a tool in a tool box. If a technician avoided a tool outright, I would (and do) question their biases.

> I’m not a particularly big fan of generative AI. I do not use and have never used it at any stage of the research, outlining, or writing process for any article I’ve ever written, except for the times when I’m testing it so I can write about it.

This is wild from a "tech" site. I used to read their articles fairly religiously, but this bent by their writers and commenters is really telling, and a signal to start looking elsewhere.

Re:Maybe We Shouldn't Be Reviewing All This Code on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @08:03PM (#49544271)
Code review for CRUD apps is largely something you can hand off to a council of sub agents. Code review for a system whose business logic is not obvious within the codebase? Currently none of the prescribed steps in TFA solve for a peer looking at it with fresh eyes.
Re:AI, ex-Soviet engineers, and the Holy Grail of rocketry on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @01:01PM (#49539200)
very insightful response - linked article didn't discuss anywhere near this level of technical tradeoff detail.
Re:Self-host your mail server on Friday July 24, 2026 @08:56PM (#49043450)
I've got a private github repo where all of this is documented. I intentionally kept everything that's secret out of there. Will turn it public, now that I think about it. Thanks, friend!
Re:Self-host your mail server on Friday July 24, 2026 @05:33PM (#49041845)
I'd run my own email server since the early 2000's - in several forms over time. A VA Linux 2U rack server that I got from work (noisy, overkill), a personal Mac Mini (Frankenstein macport upgrade-resistant), and now a single-node k8s instance with everything neatly managed (an excuse to really dive into k8s from the ground up).

I use dyndns to handle IP changes (incredibly rare with Frontier FIOS, actually). I use mailhop.org to handle secondary MX records in case my machine is down (as well as mail filtering) Everything else is postfix, spamassassin, dovecot imap

It's not a trivial system, and it took a while to get everything working how I wanted. It's a terrific learning opportunity, but it's by no means simple to mentally model the process of all that happens inside.

OP is Short-form false-dichotomy. Thank you for this perfect response.

How does starlink compare? Beginner sailor here, and I thought this was a solved problem, now.

What's the issue(s)?

Re:Does Postgres Scale? on Thursday April 30, 2026 @04:19PM (#47967694)
Yep, this is what I think about when “scaling” is mentioned. Maybe I’m too distributed-compute brained, but throwing CPU at a db isn’t what I was hoping would be the answer.
Re:Apple Introduces MacBook Neo on Wednesday March 04, 2026 @04:16PM (#47253988)
Does the Wacom show the actual result of the writing, or do you need to look at the screen? This feels like a bad solution to needing an electronic notepad.
Re:Apple Introduces MacBook Neo on Wednesday March 04, 2026 @04:02PM (#47253775)
The pen. 95% of the way our son does assignments now.

He’s off to university in Fall ‘26, and I’m waffling between getting him an Air and keeping his current iPad, or getting a neo and new iPad. Probably go the former because of the long term cost effectiveness of the Air.

I’ve had my shoulders “cleaned up” arthroscopically, and the pain is still a major preventer of movement. I would love to stay on the mats longer with something that doesn’t harken to medieval times. So excited at this prospect.
Re:iPhone dumbphone on Tuesday September 09, 2025 @02:58PM (#45186950)
Literally got my current job through a mufo on X, so I feel obliged to stick to it for the same reasons. That being said, I’ve curtailed a lot of my time on it and other social media. The results have been positive.
Re:Claude Code IDE Integration for Emacs on Wednesday August 06, 2025 @01:19PM (#44814852)
Avante - https://github.com/yetone/avante.nvim. Admittedly I haven't had time to keep up with it's changes and as a result have gone back to VS Code + Copilot, but it's very well integrated last I did use it.
