Re:The SEC Should Block Anthropic's IPO to Protect the Public on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:28PM (#50346316)
I'm pretty exhausted by the amount of prompting it takes to get Opus 5.5 to do some things the way I want it done. And I'm fighting against a complex system no human wrote. Claude also writes Jira tickets and voluminous comments that no human reasonably understands, so it's all become a huge clusterfuck. Nobody even runs the project locally so we can't even review the changes until they hit a dev server 30 or 40 minutes later. Been at this company for 8 years and this year has turned into a complete shitshow thanks to the CTO drinking the AI kool-aide. I'm looking for a new job.

>Aren't most of our heroes?

There are actual heros living among us that deserve recognition before some made-up movie, TV or comic book character. For me at least, non-fiction > fiction.

This is not to say I didn't thoroughly enjoy Patrick Stewart in that role. He did a great job of acting.

>> Patrick Stewart or the show writers?

>Both, but mostly Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart has no writing credit on TNG. He did not come up with the plot or the lines he spoke, and at most he fine-tuned the lines for his delivery of them.

If the writers of TNG had written stories like modern day Star Trek with some rather ridiculous plots, and Patrick Stewart played a more vapid character that the writers wrote, this post wouldn't be a thing.

I doubt Patrick Stewart would have taken a role for a show with shitty writing, he'd have stayed in theater and most people in this thread would have no clue who he was.

The writers made that character, he delivered it well, and the synergy made it memorable.

I love my LTO backup system. That write-protect tab gives me peace of mind, and it blows away DVD-R for speed, size and cost if you get tapes on ebay. I pay $1.50 to $2.50 per terabyte for LTO-5 tapes.
Re:Malware uses LLMs to rank victims by how much they're worth on Saturday October 31, 2026 @09:55PM (#50322066)
Docker is nowhere near as secure as a virtual machine, not even close.

>Here is an example, I traced back d/36555 from d/367547 which in turn is derived from d/36467.

slop. Dwitter is nowhere near approaching a count of d/367547

I'm not disagreeing with you, of course a different actor is going to give a different delivery, but Patrick Stewart has no writing credits on TNG. Everyone's quoting lines he said from the show, but he didn't write them, he delivered them. While he had a great delivery, people are attributing the lines to him, but they aren't actually his. I don't really want to bring down the vibe, but it's worth pointing out that good writing is what made the show what it was more than only the actors. If the writers wrote vapid lines, and he recited them, would we be having this conversation at all?
I liked Patrick Stewart in the role, but it seems like people confusing the writing for the person doing the acting? Sure, he was great in that role, but Jean-Luc Picard was more about the writers than the man doing the acting. I mean, let's be real here. He was an actor playing a role, he didn't write the words he said, they were written for the show.

At 40 YoE, it seems like your heart was probably never in it. I really miss coding at my day job. I still code plenty for my personal projects.

That's total nonsense. Uber is a luxury, only for people who can afford it.

If you can't see the rather stark difference between the two parties, and which one is obviously better for the country and not just the wealthy or hateful, then you are a broken person. And there are a lot of broken people so you've got plenty of company.
Re:AI-assisted PCB design for KiCad 10 on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:55PM (#50299361)
So it took me more than a week to get around to putting the project together, but I finally did tonight.

I just got done soldering the parts today (36 parts total). The only thing that was wrong was one capacitor had the wrong footprint size, but I was able to make it fit on the PCB.

I hooked up my serial port ESP32 firmware flasher, got the firmware flashed on the first try.

I connected to the ESP32 via wifi, plugged in my fan, and it worked perfectly.

The little webapp to control fan speed is great. It's got a speed slider, an on/off button, and low/medium/high/max speed buttons. There's also two physical buttons to control fan speed up and down.

I'm pretty amazed and happy with the results.

I wanted to get the initial chat I used but the session was compacted so all I have is the summary:

Summary: 1. Primary Request and Intent:

   - *Initial request:* a hardware/software WiFi fan dimmer project.

     - `KiCad/` holds a KiCad v10 project, schematic only; the user designs the PCB.

     - `ESP32/` holds an ESP-IDF 4.4 project.

     - The ESP32-WROOM-32E-N8 controls a triac doing phase control of a 120 V, 300 W fan.

     - The web server has a slider page plus APIs for on/off and power level.

   - *Later requests, in order:*

     - Add "JLCPCB Part #" to each part.

     - Replace through-hole parts with SMD, except connectors.

     - Change all parts back to through-hole, cheapest, from Mouser/Digikey/any source. Large, easy SMD is OK.

     - "please only select parts that you can confirm the body size, and have a 3d model for".

     - "I really do not like the schematic... The components should connect with wires to each other."

   - *Most recent request:* "Please add two more buttons that will control fan speed up and down. The down button should adjust fan power downward until the power is completely off to the fan, and the up button will have 6 gradients up until 100% power to the fan."
I've been ordering from JLCPCB, in the $500 range per order so not too big, and have never had to give a SSN, nor would I. Just no way.
TSMC is already building a huge fab in Arizona.
"both sides" are not even close to being the same.
What company is asking for your SSN?
Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:41PM (#50269114)
That's great that they dominate a shrinking market, because few people can afford to pay $80 to go 15 miles.
Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:45PM (#50267956)
Market capture didn't work so well for Uber, and it won't work for AI, and even less so for AI because you can't get a driver in China to take you to LAX airport, but you can use cheaper Chinese AI.

Uber has to pay back all the billions of dollars it wasted trying to get people to use their platform, and now I can't afford most Uber or Lyft rides, it's way too expensive. So did market capture really work if they had to raise their prices so much as to make the service unworkable for most people? The only time I take uber is if my company pays for it, and that is getting less often.

AI is also going to have to become way too expensive so they can pay back the billions (trillions?) it is borrowing. And, when everyone is laid-off or fired because AI took their job, then who's going to be paying for AI? I guess the companies that lay off all the humans will, but when the wealthy business owners realize they've replaced everything with AI and nobody is buying what they are selling because there's no more jobs, then what?

Sounds like they should worry about profitability, and a lot of other things too.

Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:36PM (#50267894)
It's going to be funny when AI soon costs 4x or more than it does now, and that non-developer CTO can't understand the slop codebase the AI created.
They probably know their bad cops are going to end up costing them at least $2.5mil in fines and settlements.
Re:Using LLM for confidence scoring is a bad idea on Thursday October 22, 2026 @12:48AM (#50191291)
I wish that were true, but in an election year, I'm constantly reminded that it isn't.
Claude has also been helping a lot with Windows, sifting through voluminous system logs to diagnose and fix obscure problems. It's rather amazing at that stuff, it's like an all-knowing sysadmin, you just have to know what to ask and give it the logs and it tells you what to try. It's correct at least 95% of the time.

My Windows system started having problems resuming from hibernate, it would just end up restarting when I woke it, losing all my application state, etc. Claude diagnosed it to being an old Nvidia driver, told me to just install the latest version, and now there are no more problems with hibernate since. I don't know if I could have figured that out on my own and I've been using Windows since v3.0. It would have taken me forever to narrow it down, and Claude did it in about 10 seconds.

I also recently switched to Linux on my server and a bunch of VMs, and it was a shaky start at first, but now that I have Claude to help, it's become pretty simple.

I'm only paying $20/mo for Claude, and I have to wonder - when they raise the price, will I follow? I think I have to at this point, but the question is how much will the raise the price, and how much am I willing to pay for it.

>all the money in the world still can't buy you time

The people who actually get the money being made are the ones who want more money asap. They are the ones who set the (often unrealistic) timelines so that they can line their pockets sooner. After all, those yacht payments are coming due.

Re:An ad-free Android TV on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @12:32AM (#50161375)
Claude has done amazing things for my Chromecast. Plex released an update recently that broke the UI badly. File names and thumbnails were overlapping each other which made the UI unusable, I couldn't navigate. I asked Claude to get the latest .apk, and fix it - and fix it, it did, all without me having to touch a command line. It even took screenshots of the chromecast screen to verify the results. I had it add a few other things like showing the media duration below the title and fixing the delete feature.

I had problems getting the Chromecast to connect to my IKEv2 home vpn at an airbnb, so I told Claude to fix it. It figured out there was no good way to make the existing VPN client apps work on my chromecast, so it wrote a new VPN client for me that works perfectly, all in about 20 minutes without me needing to do much more than supply my certs.

It also fixed SmartTube to work on my phone, the official app only shows 5 videos, Claude fixed the .apk to show 100+ thumbnails.

Same, my streaming radio stations were all buffering constantly, which never happens, so I knew something was wrong.

Fortunately Claude helped me identify the problem, and helped me fix it all on my linux server. I'm a bit out of my depth with anything difficult on Linux, and AI has really been helping a lot.

Yeah, it's called a web browser.

I'm not sure which name I hate more - porkbun or joker. It looks like I'll be picking one of them though.
Re:Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains on Sunday October 18, 2026 @05:17PM (#50145571)
Yeah, I'm not waiting around for Namecheap to screw me, I'm moving to porkbun. They do all the stuff Namecheap does for me now.

I've been waiting for the "porkbun screwed me" stories, but haven't seen any yet.

Re:AI-assisted PCB design for KiCad 10 on Friday October 16, 2026 @02:55PM (#50122796)
Plain old Claude already does this fairly well, maybe not with up-to-date DB access though.

Claude helped me cut my BOM costs on JLCPCB/LCSC significantly by suggesting cheaper versions of the parts I was already using.

It also designed a new board for me for KiCad 10 (a brand new project), including all parts selection from JLCPCB.

I ended up not using JLCPCB for the PCBA, I only ordered blank PCBs from JLCPCB because cost of PCBA was too high for this project, so I had Claude redesign the schematic to use through-hole parts that I will assemble myself. I was able to source all the parts from Mouser and Amazon.
