No, the whole point of going to a business school is to manage a medium/big business or grow a medium business into a big business. We have not yet figured out what exactly makes a new business venture succeed (apart from having heuristics in the most general terms). We have had better luck with the question of "How do I manage an existing business?" or "How do I grow the volume of business?" which is what the business schools teach (apart from a couple of entrepreneurship courses).
Re:Long-Prized H-1B Visas Lose Cachet
on Monday May 09, 2011 @09:44AM (#2528654)
There is some truth to this. I am an H1-B visa holder who due to a lawyer mess up has been forced to file under the EB-3 category. Despite me being a productive body to my company as well as assimilating into the local culture, I am seeing at least a 10 year wait before I can switch companies or jobs or start a company. While I am at a reasonably stable company, I have the same problems everyone has at reasonably stable companies, that of an entrenched upper management with not much scope of growth. I am seriously considering moving back to India to be able to start a company. H1B's were lucrative 15 years ago for smart people as the number of opportunities were low at home. It no longer is true and smart people are unwilling to pay the culture and emotional costs it takes to make a move to an alien culture.

As tasty as your diet seems(and I bet it is), being Asian, I will barf within a couple of days if I did not have some rice or starch in the diet. And it has nothing to do with the food, it is just the way I have grown up. To me, a moderate protein diet is more palatable and hence more sustainable in the long run.

While Terrence was of Chinese origin, he certainly did not grow up imbued in the Chinese culture. He was more of an Australian. I not saying this to imply Chinese are not deep thinkers. I have worked with Chinese (China bred) engineers who are damn good thinkers. So it is just a matter of personal style and priority(influenced at times by the culture one grows in).

The most disturbing thing about this episode is that DOJ referred BoA to HBGary. It is truly scary when government is in the business of targeting its own individuals. One has to wonder how it is different from Ben Ali or Gaddafi targeting their own people. Sure the scale is different, but the principle is the same.

The right way to go about it is get a good lawyer to represent you. It seems like an overkill but sounds like you can afford it.
My valid visa case was rejected by INS and I was asked to go through a number of hoops because the lawyer had entered information in a different format. I changed lawyers and it made a sea of difference. Learnt the lesson that never skimp on lawyers. Try talking to Aron Finklestein or Alisa Klein at http://www.murthy.com/attprofi.html. They charge 200$ for a 20 min consult and will tell you what to do exactly. I was not sure if 20 mins would be enough to explain my complex case but 20 mins is all it took for them to come up with a strategy. Best of luck.

They are one of the best immigration lawyer teams that I have dealt with. They are the only firm where every member of the team seems to understand all the fine nuances of immigration law and how it can be used to your benefit. Having a bad or just an OK lawyer is expensive in the long run when it comes to immigration.

I like the idea.
Couple of nits:
1. The TOS link refers back to the FAQ.
2. Why not allow search by title?
3. Also it would be nice if the stack of books were pictures of actual books with cover sleeves in it.
4. I know it sounds elementary, but add a picture of how an ISBN looks like.

Yes, you cannot be fired for legally protected reasons. Well, the company that fired you also knows that. So they come up with a reason that is not protected( "Does not fit well with the company culture"). The burden of proof is upon the ex-employee to show that they were let go for a protected reason(It is a very high burden).

Actually, IBM did retroactively change the pension eligibility criteria as well as the payoff during its restructuring under Lou Gerstner(This is the late 90s). There is still a pending lawsuit if I remember correctly. It makes no sense to me as to why it is OK to underfund pension accounts. One major reason IBM was able to make the change is because it had no unions(FWIW I am no fan of unions as they encourage sloth in organisations).

Did you not put grades when you were graduating out of college? My boss considers it a big no when a recent grad refuses to put grades. I have seen that grades or even degrees do not matter when you claim experience and knowledge. But that seems not to be the case where your masters is a big talking point.
Re:Corruption is forcing Russia’s best and brightest to flee the country

"Theoretically, even the most egoistic government who's only purpose is to get more for themselves must realize that in order to preserve it's welfare it must make sure the citizens are doing fine."
The trouble is an egoistical government rarely possesses the ability to draw a line and stop interfering(rules and regulations) and collecting money(taxes, bribes) so that people can have enough to do fine. The people who run it are blinded by greed and always want a little bit more. Also, while the people at the top might realize that corruption should not exceed beyond a point, it is hard to enforce as your lowly clerk/officer does not possess the ability to see the bit picture. All he/she knows is everyone is corrupt(it is institutionalized) and tries to take the biggest pie he/she can.

How are you coping with the side-effects? When I tried Adderall for the first time, it was like some one had switched on the stadium lights. However, it killed my sleep and I was a wreck within a week. I had to discontinue it as lack of sleep was causing social issues with my wife and co-workers.
