Re:I Don't Have Spotify on Tuesday November 12, 2024 @04:32AM (#42114068)
I don't understand why AM doesn't use iCloud to store playlists. You have the storage anyway and a good chunk of people pay for an additional increase too.
I have the base level M2 Air and it’s anything but a basic browsing machine.

Runs everything I throw at it development wise, while a good few other things are open and it has never felt slow. Compare that to any Windows laptops with the same spec and it would be chugging along with just Chrome open.

Easy solution is to create a new account that's only used for Youtube - or even easier don't login at all.
Re:Tell HN: DigitalOcean London Was Down on Wednesday August 09, 2023 @06:10AM (#37060621)
Having the same issues. Both my droplets and multiple sites hosted on their App platform have all gone down.

Edit: Just as I posted that everything came back online.

Re:PhpBB on Friday June 16, 2023 @11:51AM (#36358696)
I still run a couple of fairly popular forums which I setup coming on nearly 15 years ago now. All powered by phpBB and recently Flarum was used for the latest site.

There's still demand there for smaller communities and while some members have dropped off over the years it's still the most popular way to keep in touch with the latest happenings, none of the other social networks really took any of the traffic away.

I'd love to see more spring up - for me there's always more of a community feel, you get to know the regulars and everyone is there for that specific topic.

It's a little clunky these days but it's still a great piece of forum software.

Perfect! Just noticed they need to update the Firefox extension though as it's not supported just yet.
Re:Apple AirTags draining battery of devices close by on Friday March 11, 2022 @03:40AM (#30637705)
I've had this issue too. My iPad pro is generally within 4 foot of an airtag which is attached to my keys. During the day I don't see any real battery drain however during the night it seems to be draining the battery at an accelerated rate.

I'd wake up and check it within the battery info section to see Find My using 90%+ of the battery over the last 24hrs.

I now have a shortcut setup to disable bluetooth on the iPad from midnight > 7am. Find my usage drops all the way down to <2% and battery drain is very minimal - if I leave bluetooth on overnight it jumps all the way back up and drains approx 40-60% of the battery overnight.

Recently I've been using Bulma for pretty much all internal projects. Offers enough flexibility to generate any interface you need. If I need something a little more prettier I'll drop in Material Design Lite (https://getmdl.io) instead.
$4 per user however every user on the domain needs to be licensed. (So a company with 300 G Suite users would be $14,400 a year)
Re:Ask HN: What are your favorite subscription services? on Wednesday May 17, 2017 @04:57AM (#14356700)
Spotify for all my music needs. Found so much new music over the years I'd have never of found without it.

Patreon - spend around £40 a month split between 2 creators at the moment, well worth it as their content is top notch.

Stripe documentation is very good: https://stripe.com/docs

Detailed, full of examples and easy to understand.

Berghaus 24/7 pack: http://www.berghaus.com/twentyfourseven%2B-30-rucksack/42142...

Bought a new hiking ruck/daysack so this one is now my daily laptop bag / carry on for travelling.

Re:Ask HN: Best digital camera for a post-4k world? on Saturday December 10, 2016 @07:57PM (#13148954)
But even then most DSLRs are at least 20MP+ giving enough wiggle room to crop/manipulate the image and still have a high enough resolution to display on 4K devices.

I don't think it will be an issue for a good while yet and by that time I'm sure new bodies will come out to take advantage of it.

Re:My Pixel has a manufacturing defect on Saturday December 10, 2016 @12:55PM (#13146853)
Or you just mishandle your devices. Never had a case/screen protector or anything on every device I've ever owned and they're all still spotless (my iphone 6 is 2 years old and I still get comments regarding how new it looks).

Look after the device and don't go throwing it around.

Re:Ask HN: Best digital camera for a post-4k world? on Friday December 09, 2016 @06:12PM (#13142696)
The "best digital camera" is the one you can afford. That said unless you're a true enthusiast spending £3-5k on a top end body it's pretty pointless, might as well go for something along with the 70D or d7100/7200.
Re:How to steal a developer's local database on Thursday September 01, 2016 @03:42PM (#12408254)
jailbreakme took advantage of a Safari bug. All you needed to do was go to the website, hit a button and wait a few minutes.
Re:Ask HN: How do people in F1 get their job? on Tuesday August 23, 2016 @09:12AM (#12343410)
Depends on the position. The pit crew are made up of car mechanics and more senior technical/critical roles.

You'll never find a role advertised for a 'wheel changer', instead you'll need to work your way into the company as a mechanic and then move onto the race team if you're suitable.

If you have the experience then take a look on their company site, for example McLaren have various roles open:

Re:Ask HN: Is Sublime Text profitable? on Thursday June 16, 2016 @07:49PM (#11919829)
Unless the creator released the figures nobody will know however it must be bringing in enough money to keep him interested.

Personally if you're using the software to make money then dropping a one off payment of $70 is nothing in the long term.

Re:Pills: A simple responsive CSS grid for humans on Thursday June 02, 2016 @06:56AM (#11821555)
Small point which I see fairly regularly. Please provide a partial sass/less partial in addition to the css file.
Re:Coding is boring, unless on Sunday November 29, 2015 @03:44PM (#10645999)
2 years > 3 years > 1 year > 1.5 years > 1 year

Just started a new job last week too, some cases its been that I haven't enjoyed the agency others its nothing more than the new company offering something better.

Re:Evernote cuts 47 employees and shuts down 3 offices on Wednesday September 30, 2015 @05:52AM (#10302794)
While it reimports everything into Evernote it doesn't keep the notebooks or stacks you've setup.

Really annoying if you're importing in to another account.

Not really.

My job finishes at 5.30pm, an hour or so before I'll start winding up any bigger jobs ready to pick them up in the morning.

Anyone who's consistently having to work overtime are unable to manage their time correctly.

Re:Ask HN: What stationary are you using? on Thursday July 16, 2015 @11:31AM (#9897816)
Pen: Uni Pin fine line. 0.1mm is my go to for general day to day use, anything over 0.5mm tends to be too thick for writing.

Pad: whitelines black oceans (Lined) is really nice to write in.

Posting religious beliefs in a science based discussion will never go down well.
Re:Developers are not always rich people on Tuesday July 07, 2015 @08:17AM (#9844926)
Get out of London ASAP. £32k a year is a respectable wage and you'll find it goes a long way once you move further north (I'm on a very similar wage and live in Leeds)

First thing is you need that roof over your head, if possible clear those arrears as a priority - moving will become more difficult if you leave with debt as no agency or landlord will touch you and it will damage your credit rating for years.

You're saying the pricing is simple yet you offer it in hours, why not just say it's $5 a month?

Other than that I just don't see the benefit of having to pay for 2 hosting accounts - one of which I have manage separately.

Re:Ask HN: Are there forgotten servers out there? on Saturday May 30, 2015 @12:30PM (#9630671)
Previous company I was at had a small server setup to run a few automated tasks every morning. It must have been running for at least 10 years before a new employee asked where it was physically located.

They eventually found it covered in dust in a small utility closest. None of the fans were working either (other than the CPU/PSU) yet it still chugged along doing its job.

Re:Virgin Media stores user passwords in plaintext? on Tuesday May 05, 2015 @09:47AM (#9492425)
Correct, it's just a simple way to verify you're the account holder. Saves asking for DOB, address, account number which are more accessible.
Re:Virgin Media stores user passwords in plaintext? on Tuesday May 05, 2015 @09:46AM (#9492412)
The password is the one you tell them on initial setup of the account, they'll ask you for a memorable word to verify that it's the account holder they're talking to.

This isn't anything to do with account logins etc. No different than companies asking you to verify your DOB and address to prove who you are.

Re:How to set up your own free VPN server on AWS on Wednesday March 25, 2015 @05:08AM (#9261857)
If you don't mind the 2 user limit might as well install OpenVPN Access Server. Gives you a web UI and the setup is easier https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-inst...
