Re:Running local models on an M4 with 24GB memory on Tuesday May 12, 2026 @01:53AM (#48104697)
i thought it was a small typo of

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/tesla-m40-24-gb.c3838

and wanted to ask what version of nvidia driver and cuda...

the point. of course. is to teach. that nothing is good or bad. consequences.
and i dont know whats the reliability gain from consumer to "server" hardware. 1 x 9? hot plug power supplies? definitely more ram slots i guess...

meanwhile..i see axiomtek industrial computers that dont even have a power button sold with 7yr warranties..

ah my favourite question to my friends who told me they were getting married -> "so a 2yr phone contract feels like a long time to u? how about 20yrs?"
backlit keyboards are an ok idea..
Re:Trump considering taking over Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday March 10, 2026 @04:39AM (#47320558)
what does that even mean? does it mean iran will stop shooting at ships passing thru the area? because usa has taken it over?
i am not sre, merely sysadmin.

and somehow i have this impression that gpus on slurm/pbs could not be simpler.

u can use a vm for the head node, dont even need the clustering really..if u can accept taking 20min to restore a vm.. and the rest of the hardware are homogeneous - you setup 1 right and the rest are identical.

and its a cluster with a job queue.. 1 node going down is not the end of the world..

ok if u have pcie GPUs sometimes u have to re-seat them and its a pain. otherwise if ur h200 or disks fail u just replace them, under warranty or not...

Re:Why is Singapore no longer "cool"? on Tuesday February 10, 2026 @01:21AM (#46956031)
singaporeans can read that. in singapore. we can access the rsf.org website too.
Re:Why is Singapore no longer "cool"? on Tuesday February 10, 2026 @01:16AM (#46956009)
those votes have every chance of changing everything.

its a first past the post system.

but fact is they always have majority of the popular vote. i dont think it ever declined below 55%. and at best they get 60+%.

there's always a large proportion of singaporeans who want the change. just never enough of them, yet. and maybe there might never be, if most singaporeans are happy with things as they stand.

Re:Why is Singapore no longer "cool"? on Tuesday February 10, 2026 @01:09AM (#46955971)
the modus operandi is to live and work, and maybe raise and educate ur kids in singapore. and go jb kl bkk hcmc jkt or wherever else to play.
Re:Why is Singapore no longer "cool"? on Tuesday February 10, 2026 @01:04AM (#46955946)
and theres no shortage of well educated malaysian chinese running away from bumi policies...
Re:Why is Singapore no longer "cool"? on Tuesday February 10, 2026 @12:58AM (#46955905)
wrt the age demographics...

1.theres a constant supply of malaysian chinese who want to migrate to singapore. they're the best, cos they're culturally similar.

2.failing that,a few taiwanese or china chinese can also be allowed to immigrate. singapore is small, and china is huge. only need a few..

wrt living costs.. if u stick to govt subsidised housing(hdb),(public) transport,(hawker) food and healthcare, u shld be spending less as a % of income than the rest of asean on those things. but singaporeans want more, and leave in droves on trips overseas at every opportunity....

Re:The Chinese planemaker taking on Boeing and Airbus on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @03:01AM (#46882868)
bombardier sold most of their aircraft models though? the regional jets (to airbus, yes?) and the turboprops... and only make business jets now?

even embraer at one point wanted to sell their ejets? boeing backed out of buying or something?

and fokker and dornier are gone for good while the japs terminated their mitsubishi spacejet..

i thought now is the time they start going about cutting prices as AI subtitling reduces their costs..
Re:Silver plunges 30% in worst day since 1980, gold tumbles on Monday February 02, 2026 @09:39PM (#46865736)
u can not-tax the first property...
Re:If You Tax Them, Will They Leave? on Thursday January 29, 2026 @02:04AM (#46806755)
i thought most economists would agree that consumption should be encouraged and savings should be discouraged. and that'd be how progressive taxes work? people tend to save more and consume less as their incomes increase?
wait. the tests are done on paper or done on computers?
Re:The coming war on Car Ownership on Monday January 26, 2026 @01:23AM (#46762434)
from a pedestrian's point of view. as soon as the self driving car is like safer than the most dangerous bottom 20% of drivers..i want those drivers off the road. and i believe, from google's numbers, we might be there already, if not better.
once upon a time i had a boss who asked for a "super admin" account to "trump" the domain administrators..and a "master key" to decrypt any file , in case the user lost their key.
Re:The behavioral cost of personalized pricing on Sunday January 25, 2026 @10:41PM (#46761622)
is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_discrimination very different from buying things off ebay? why would salespeople even exist if there was perfect information?

so people want efficient markets and price discovery..but only when it results in them paying lower prices? otherwise the law should step in and preferably set prices by fiat or magic?

ok my personal take on buyng knick knacks in chatuchak is.. assume everything is cheap , thats why i come to thailand, i can afford this...

Re:SmartOS on Thursday January 22, 2026 @09:16PM (#46727554)

Re: on Thursday January 22, 2026 @08:10PM (#46727155)
i dunno why i keep imagining something like ipfs could help something like the internet archive...
another group..

i am looking for a bargain not a bidding war. i dont know what is my price ceiling but i know i will only increment twice. if someone outbids me instantly twice in a row i dont want the thing anymore.

Re:LG UltraFine Evo 6K 32-inch Monitor Review on Tuesday January 20, 2026 @09:23PM (#46700423)
the old monitors still work. its a waste to throw them away. something like that?
i dream of a risc-v or mips phone and/or home router or something similar. and that it runs some kind of linux. and that whatsapp and google authenticator works on it. is android an acceptable flavor of linux?
