it's monthly :) $240M revenue companies will absolutely find a way to fork $1M if they need to. Kimi most likely sees the eyeballs of free advertising as more profitable in the grander scheme of things

Re:How to organize yourself as a solo founder on Wednesday April 06, 2022 @05:29AM (#30930139)
I agree with this, email (professional at least) inbox should be treated as its own todo list.

anything in the inbox is something to action, anything you don't need to action personally, archive / tag or move to a folder and be done with it.

If it's something to action then at least gmail has a snooze button and I've found that to be super helpful.

My rule of thumb is that I should not have more than 30 items in my inbox. If there's more then clearing the inbox takes priority over anything else (bar key meetings).

Re:Dagger: a new way to build CI/CD pipelines on Thursday March 31, 2022 @04:14AM (#30864964)
That's fine, I don't deny that, companies like circleCI and co are doing really well, but Docker is also critical to a lot of enterprise as well and yet the business model was not as strong as initially thought.

I'm curious to understand what the pricing is going to be and whether it's going to be well recieved or not (and right now, there is nowhere on dagger.io's website where pricing is mentioned)

Hey Solomon,

question coming from a sales guy among this crowd... Who does this impact the most and what outcomes does that help them achieve? At the end of the day, you need to pay the bills, for you and your team, who is going to sign the dotted line and tell you that yes "I need to invest $100k on this because it solves a major pain!"?

Whilst I can see this as a nice to have, I'm having a hard time understanding who your target market is going to be...

At the end of the day, I presume this is going to end up becoming a full fledged company, with its sales team, marketing and what not. What are you thinking about in terms of revenue channels so far ?

Re:It takes $420k per year to run Lichess on Sunday January 16, 2022 @10:05AM (#29956519)
worth baring in mind that there's a lot of extra paid by the employer on top of the "gross" salary someone gets in Europe (especially in France) that someone in the US would have to cover by himself (hence why i't typical to see double that amount for someone in the US).
ugh, why should we need a browser extension to achieve this sort of thing.

As if browser weren't already bloated enough without taking extensions into account..

Re:PeerTube 4 RC on Tuesday November 30, 2021 @05:35AM (#29390765)
not really, Framasoft is a French company that develops a collection of open source alternatives to popular software.

It's the same as if Microsoft was posting a blog on its own msdn.com domain for something related to visual studio or SharePoint

this is a point that seems to be largely overlooked overall on the impact a specific country has on global emissions.

Overall, the US has a bigger impact than a country like Spain simply because you need to also factor in the supply chain emissions that come with it (in this case, a lot of it being generated somewhere else but being consumed in the US).

Re:The Lightness of Windows on Monday June 28, 2021 @01:52PM (#27665123)
IE6 was released in 2001, 3 years before Firefox 1.0.

At the time, it was indeed a gift and Netscape was already on its dying legs with Netscape 6, bloated beyond recognition

Re:NVMe is not a hard disk on Friday June 11, 2021 @12:17PM (#27475218)
how would that process look like in practice should you need to get to call the insurance guys? as in, would you claim on the cost to retrieve the data or ? (this question is general, regardless of the actual country)
Re:Salesforce is in talks to buy Slack on Wednesday November 25, 2020 @12:25PM (#25211688)
really? I thought they were pretty much a direct competitor except with a different take on the whole idea. What's the use case for Quip then ?
Re:Salesforce is in talks to buy Slack on Wednesday November 25, 2020 @12:15PM (#25211552)
How would that work considering Salesforce already has Quip ?
Re:Adobe XD for Visual Studio Code on Monday October 26, 2020 @04:47AM (#24894020)
another one to look at is Nitro as well (just looked for an alternative based on Silhouette's comment below). here's a link to G2 for comparisons: https://www.g2.com/products/foxit-phantompdf/competitors/alt...
have you looked at foxitPDF ? this is a comparison table from Foxit's site against Acrobat Pro: https://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf-editor/adobe-acrobat-alter...

(not associated with Foxit in any way shape or form nor a user)

Re:How Discord Won on Tuesday October 20, 2020 @07:58AM (#24836315)
I was curious and surprised you didn't link to your site at all so I looked at your submission history and I believe you're referring to this: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6670113 ? This links to https://volafile.org/ which I have to say is pretty damn awesome as a concept! Simple yet effective.

curious why you didn't choose to charge a fee for registering an account in the end?

Are you monetizing the service in any way? I assume hosting files up to 20GB doesn't come for free right?

Re:Sneaky Sliders on Sunday October 18, 2020 @06:34AM (#24816824)
Yeah I think that's a remnant from the days where mouses used to have 3 buttons rather than a wheel
Re:Sneaky Sliders on Saturday October 17, 2020 @09:34AM (#24809862)
I don't know if Unity does it but I think I remember Adobe and 3D programs like Maya and 3DS Max also have this "hidden slider" feature which you can also control the increments with a combination of the shift or ctrl key (don't remember which one)
Re:A Note about Spotify Transfers on Monday October 12, 2020 @05:47AM (#24752848)
I don't understand how many people seem to praise Spotify for their "Discover Weekly", it's been consistently shit for me for the past 2 years if not more. there's about 10 german songs in one of my playlists and I consistently get german tunes I don't care for and it doesn't seem to stop. On the other hand, I have a fair bit of French songs in about 3 or 4 playlists and yet have never gotten a recommendation of French stuff...

I've tried to understand how the algo somewhat works to suggest stuff but with no luck... I keep hitting the don't like this song or artist and yest somehow I still manage to get dreadful recommendations each week :(

Re:Is the web getting slower? on Wednesday September 09, 2020 @04:18AM (#24418646)
I'm no expert, but I hope someone at quora has some sort of light-bulb moment reading this....

Looked at the source for one answer because of their login wall and couldn't be bothered to re-create my account and to get to the actual answer is about 30!! nested divs and then each line of text (provided you've returned to the next line in the visual text editor to write your answer)is in its own <p> which is fine on its own, but each <p> is styled with a boatload of classes for no apparent reason....

I'm fully with you as far as loading times, but even a simple wordpress install these days add incredible useless stuff that makes it non trivial for the average blogger to simplify...

I think Worldbrain Memex does this: https://getmemex.com/

Been using it for a little while and it's definitely interesting although I'm not sure it backs up images as well, but could be worth a try for you.

Re:Portals API on Tuesday June 30, 2020 @10:59AM (#23690718)
My "non-professional in the field" opinion of this at first glance is that this seems like a concept ripe for abuse and security holes (not to mention scam potential) trying to be a successor to something that was already pretty bad in that regard...

This would be better if it was designed with the end user in mind from the get go and in full control of defining portals himself. (and by that I mean, if you take the example linked by omneity [1], I should be the one defining which "shopping cart" i'm sending the recipe ingredients to or which social app is triggered and what data am I sending it).

For some reason this also gives me some "Fuschia OS" vibes [2] or at least how Google would want to have this as standard on the web...

Re:Notion for everyone on Thursday May 21, 2020 @09:27AM (#23258034)
Same problem here, I ended up creating different workspaces altogether as I can't justify paying $16/mo for 2.

all workspaces now appear as "Team plan trial" but still the same limitations as before which is fine with me. all the workspaces are named with our initials at the beginning to make sure we don't get confused with personal ones...

ie : "AB - Home | AB - Finances | AB - Life" etc.

Re:Notion for everyone on Thursday May 21, 2020 @09:24AM (#23258015)
so does that mean the person you've shared it with can have access to the full workspace? I honestly don't mind paying $8/month for 2 but it seems that the only way we can both be admin immediately bring this cost to the team plan at $16/mo for two....
Re:Microsoft announces Lists, a new Airtable-like app on Wednesday May 20, 2020 @05:24AM (#23244878)
What you're forgetting is that all of those SaaS tools came about to improve (or replace) some of the existing Microsoft products that did not live up to the expectations of the modern corporate world:

Slack -> Lync/Skype for Business/Whatever other name MSFT came up with

Trello -> MS Project

Tableau -> MS SSRS

Airtable -> SharePoint Lists & Workflow

Re:Microsoft announces Lists, a new Airtable-like app on Wednesday May 20, 2020 @05:20AM (#23244859)
Lists is purely and simply a modern update to SharePoint lists. half of the current collaborative space in SaaS can be traced back to some kind of feature that SharePoint has had in the past.
Re:Pricing Your Product on Sunday May 03, 2020 @11:25AM (#23059532)
What you're missing is thaton the sales side of things, most of these price discount or variation are only really included in the quotes and not on the crm itself.

This is primarily (imho) because most companies (whether SaaS or other) start their CRM journey with the basics and only end up with some sort of CPQ or quote to cash at a later stage.

Re:Paris Mayor: It's Time for a '15-Minute City' on Saturday February 22, 2020 @04:14AM (#22390112)
there is nothing "fake news" about this statement. it's just simply factually incorrect.
