Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:14PM (#50294347)
I’m guessing you may not be from a minority and/or you live in a safe area? It’s a common occurrence for bigots to lob “words” at those people, in a way that they rightfully do not feel safe. On occasion, it escalates. What this means is that those people, for their own safety, have to act differently than they normally would. For example, gay/lesbian couples often have to pretend to be straight and can’t have a normal night out and display affection without being in danger.

In addition to the possibility of peril, there is also the psychological harm these interactions cause, and the living in fear.

It is only those who are safe who believe words from the intolerant are harmless. The intolerant count on that lack of knowledge to get away with “just asking questions”.

I hope you and your loved ones never have to go through any such interactions, they are harrowing, but I also urge you to have deep discussions with the recipients of them to understand a bit better why we should protect them instead of dismissing their concerns.

Re:LLM Voice on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:06PM (#50293362)
I’m fine with my neighbour eating TV dinners, but if they invite me for a meal I expect to not be served a TV dinner, or to at a minimum be informed beforehand that that’s what going to be served.

Same thing with LLM-assisted writing. It’s one thing to do it for yourself, quite another to share it with other folks without warning.

That’s insane, and I’d like to know more about how that even came to pass. A quick search isn’t surfacing anything relevant, do you have a link?
> But the fact that it was mentioned at all, politely or not, is bizarre to me.

Again, because you don’t have to deal with it constantly. Women are constantly being undermined.

> there's a difference between empathy and just policing language for no discernable reason.

And what I said in my comment is that I don’t know which happened to you, but that it’s important to understand that because you’re not suffering the everyday repercussions which are treated as “normal”, maybe you don’t really know which one it was either. That’s where the empathy comes in, it’s you reaching out to the person and talking about it, rather than just complaining about it on the internet.

> I think the reason you were downvoted wasn't the call to empathy

I was not referring to an isolated incident. In fact, I can fairly often predict when the worst people will come out to downvote and run (they never have the courage to comment). At this point I can assert with a good amount of confidence that HN has a severe dipshit problem.

> the insinuation that I somehow was not being empathetic in my comment

There was no such insinuation, but it is increasingly common on HN that people just read anything and foam at the mouth thinking they are being attacked. For a community which prides themselves on objectivity and correctness, there sure are a lot of assumptions and wrong interpretations.

> which perhaps I was not being empathetic but it seems irrelevant to the topic at hand.

As long as you believe being empathetic to a person who was affected by your words is irrelevant, you will be incapable of understanding the situation, seeing it for what it really is, and navigate it appropriately.

> widely adopted

What a poor example. Epic Games’ launcher is popular despite its software, not because of it, and in large part because they give away free games every week.

> battle-tested

You’re just throwing words around. You can’t in good faith call something that is barely out “battle-tested”.

> Claude Code would be another example.

Claude Code is widely regarded as a mess and bad software, and for good reason (see sibling comment).

Zig has had a similar policy for a while. Where are these myriad forks which accelerate faster, and the communities behind them?

Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:04PM (#50278183)
Er… Yes they have. Liquid Glass is awful. It’s not only ugly (that’s preference, though), it has definitely negatively affected the UX. That’s why they’re adding sliders and options and reversal left and right.

Please! The bump is so stupid. All I want is the original SE with new internals.

> I think it was just a way to get attention.

Maybe. But it doesn’t change the fact that (and this is opinion, of course) this isn’t a good community to answer the question. And if you don’t want the question answered, what’s the point of getting the attention?

> this is the kind a post that immediately makes me think there is a mini-project underneath it.

I don’t understand what point you’re making.

Re:Hey, Y Combinator - What will happen to humans? on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @06:54AM (#50257203)
> you are well educated, well informed builders. you know best.

Hahahahahahahahahaha gasps for air hahahahahahahaha.

> im in a pretty depressed mood lately

You have a fantastic sense of humour, though.

Don’t fall into the trap of deifying HN. This community is full of bigots with no empathy who openly cheer for fucking over others in the name of personal profit. Not everyone, of course, there are also kind, interesting people here, but there’s good reason HN (a.k.a. “the orange site”) is endlessly mocked and avoided in other communities. There are some truly vile takes over here.

This community has too many people who are very smart in one particular axis and arrogantly believe that translates to every other. It is one of the last places where you should be asking for advice on your mood or the future of humanity. If this community had its say on the future of humanity, it would look a lot like what we are already seeing: A few narcissists with too much power controlling the lives of everyone with zero regard for their humanity, while bleeding the planet dry.

If you want to feel better, step away from the computer. Go engage with your friends and your community, in person. Form strong bonds and learn to depend on others and have others depend on you. Organise. Fight for your beliefs. Be kind.

> I'm all for inclusive language but I thought that was a bridge too far.

Presumably you haven’t been living on “the other side” for a whole life. Try living decades in environments where you’re constantly devalued in little ways, and you too may grow to become resentful.

Now, maybe you were chastised, or maybe you were just asked politely and interpreted it as a reprimand. I wasn’t there, I can’t say, all I have is your side. But let’s say the person did chastise you. They could probably have been more polite about it, but how many times have they been polite before with no results? That’s maybe not your fault, but you did unwillingly contribute to that person’s exasperation that day.

All I’m saying is let’s have a little empathy towards others, even when they don’t have it towards us, because we all have days when we’re our best and days when we aren’t, and we don’t know what the other person is going through.

Edit: I want to thank the downvoters for not letting me forget HN has turned into a cesspool and spending long here isn’t healthy. This is the website where calling other people subhuman and cheering for their extermination is upvoted (I’m not referring to the parent comment, but something I’ve seen more than once) and calling for empathy and union is downvoted. With such a backwards inhumane cheering squad, it’s no wonder tech companies are what they are.

Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:50PM (#50250745)
> The desktop UI was perfected around the time of Windows 95

There’s no need to be hyperbolic or blinded by nostalgia. Yes, user interfaces have suffered several setbacks in the years since, but even if we concede every change was for the worse (they weren’t) it was by no means “perfected” and there was still plenty of area for improvement.

Re:F-Zero X on Nintendo 3DS on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:34AM (#50241263)
> I guess for those who are interested in an F Zero X port you assume they already know what platform it was on.

You assume wrong. I would be interested and I didn’t know by name what the platform was. I never played F-Zero but I’m familiar with it thanks to Super Smash Bros.

> If I ever talk about Ocarina of Time, I don't feel the need to specify what platform it was on

Considering there’s a remake with the same name on the Switch 2, you do need to specify.

Re:What goes into making an animated film? on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:54AM (#50240979)
> The earliest mention I could find for the page is from Feb 2022

That comment says the page was about Encanto. It’s now about Zootopia 2. Clearly they’re updating the page.

But I agree it’s absurd to claim Disney would be making pages like this as training material for LLMs.

Re:What goes into making an animated film? on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:43AM (#50240901)
I’m sorry to say that’s a failure on your part. Small creators with new ideas and love of storytelling already existed and were making fantastic work before AI. That you think everything was the same just shows you weren’t paying attention beyond Hollywood blockbusters, but the work was there and continues to be, no AI necessary to produce it.
Re:What goes into making an animated film? on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:18AM (#50240712)
> about as good as Disney Animation

I’ve never seen a Disney animation where they focus on the character’s shoes so they can magically tie a shoelace that is already tied, then put on a jacket through the sleeve, then walk a boring long time with bad cuts and choppy frames so the character can put on another jacket from the front which morphs into a onesie.

I disagree it gets much better after episode 3, as you claim in other comments. Gave episode 4 a shot and it’s still full of stiff movement, bad faces, bad pacing, bad dialogue.

That anyone thinks this looks like professional animation is the reason professionals are struggling. Let’s stop devaluing the craft and start paying attention to what goes into it. Details make the piece.

Sure, why not? That has no meaningful impact on the point, it reflects just as bad on the same entities (the ones paying).
I don’t know why you’d want to remember the number, but this one seems easy if you know some memory techniques.

> Remember that vuln 111-497 (as two chunks)

Good first step. Remember it’s two sets of three numbers. The first set is all ones, meaning the first three numbers are 1, then the fourth number is 4, then you add five for the next one (9), then you have to remember to subtract two (7)¹.

May sound silly, but I bet some of you have already memorised it from that alone. Being a slightly convoluted by still logical set-by-step helps with recollection.

¹ Lot of different ways to go about that, like remembering that the first set was three of one so “two was left out”.

> I know how to do that with a computer but not iPhones. Androids are probably easier to set up.

I don’t understand this type of comment which is so prevalent on HN. If you don’t know, why do you assume something else is easier or harder? It takes less time to do this web search than to reply to a comment. Here’s how to change it on both iOS and Android, from the same website:

https://www.howtogeek.com/261701/how-to-change-the-dns-serve...

https://www.howtogeek.com/787039/how-to-change-your-dns-serv...

Doesn’t seem meaningfully different to me.

> The administration can take over them with the snap of a finger if they so desire.

No, no they cannot. They sure want you to believe that, though, and the longer that fantasy is left unchecked, the more power it gets. The current administration is not omnipotent, and that is exemplified by the times it was pushed back (not by the bootlicker CEOs at major US tech companies, obviously).

Like John Oliver said, use the four key words that make weak bullies go away: “fuck you, make me”.

https://youtu.be/ohPToBog_-g?t=1610

> some almighty supreme being

That’s not the argument. Unfortunately, reading comprehension and engaging in good faith continues to decline rapidly on HN.

Not being beholden to someone does not mean you have power over them. For example: you are not beholden to me and thus don’t have to do anything I say; but that doesn’t mean I have to do anything you say either, I’m not beholden to you.

I know there’s a subsection of the internet who for some reason believe VPNs are the solution to everything and better than sliced bread, but VPNs are absolutely unnecessary (and frankly overkill) for these types of blocks. All you have to do is change the DNS service on your machine, which is trivial even for non-technical users and unlike a VPN doesn’t disrupt anything about your computer usage.
> This is exactly the kind of stupidity that helps people like Trump reelected.

You mean when people admittedly have no knowledge of a subject but still speak authoritatively about it, viscerally criticising one of the sides and even suggesting fowl play, instead of taking care to be humble and understand the context before speaking or making accusations?

I agree, that is very much the kind of attitude that got us into the current situation.

> They are beholden to the current US admin - as always

They have, as the joke goes, more money than God and influence all over the world. They are beholden to no one. They have the resources to fight in court against decisions they don’t believe in, and all the lobbying they need to shape established laws.

They choose their actions, and their actions are their own. Every single dollar they donate to the current president but not the previous one is an admission of their allegiance and (lack of) morals.

Having principles and standing for them costs money, and these societal parasites subsist on money and influence. Make no mistake, they will sell their own mother to further their goals, but they don’t have to while they can keep selling everyone else’s.

You can resent them all you like; they don’t care as long as nothing is done to them, and nothing is being done. Resentment is worthless without action.
