Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Monday October 26, 2026 @06:08PM (#50251786)
I used the Zune theme for windows XP which I really liked. I dreaded Vista because it was just a resource eater with all the effects turned on.

Yeah. These days when the work machine actually stayed at work. Or that you had meetings with everybody in the room without in front of a laptop or mobile screen.
Re:Apple Music 404 Not Found on Friday October 23, 2026 @03:38PM (#50214276)
I’m happy that I still have my 3rd gen and classic 120gig in black. Man these players where just the best.
I heard about this story somewhere and couldn’t really believe it. I also thought that the US/German comparison videos about the fact we Germans let our kids go to school alone etc are a bit over the top. Seems no. But to be fair. Also in Germany things around security have changed. Where it was normal in my youth that my parents had actually no clue where I was while I was roaming the streets of Berlin (Courtesy to a Berlin wide public transport ticket I got for school). Today that doesn’t fly anymore. Kids have phones and get tracked every step. It’s the more controlled level of freedom. Another connected anecdote that left me puzzled at the time: I spend some days in D.C last year (right before the National Guard got deployed) and wanted to do a short run from the Hotel. It was already going dark and I didn’t check for the weather and asked at the desk if it was ok outside to run. The answer was “yes it’s pretty safe around here.” See my mind never made the connection that something harmful would be out there waiting for me.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:15AM (#50130896)
10 or more years ago when Ludacris mode was added people said the same. But the answer was that we need these things so the rich shell out the money and Tesla can use it to fulfill the actual mission of yada yada yada.

I wonder how many still believe this. It’s like Tom Hanks in Big is in charge of both a car and rocket company. Sure it’s awesome but not what we need right now.

Yes climate change is the biggest issue. But also the fact that the spree was artificially topped up for roughly 100 years and the cities and industries count on that water.

So it will be rough for the area. It’s man-made though. That’s why I compared it to the Colorado basin situation around lake Lake Mead. Here is another article: https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/presse/pressemitteilungen/spr...

This report seems to be a bit one-sided. They say the lakes will be used as reservoirs for rivers like the spree. The issue is that the spree was feed for years with excess water from the old mines which had to pump the water out. Now they don’t pump water anymore to fill up these lakes and some parts of the spree run low on water during summer. The water table fell a lot over the last 10 to 20 years in Berlin. I’m not sure what exactly contributed to this situation overall. But they had plans to pump water from the Elbe into the Spree to help out with the situation. But cities downstream are not happy about the situation. For me this feels like a somewhat similar situation to the Colorado River situation with the upper and lower basins.

Re:Keyboard differences between Windows and Macs on Friday October 09, 2026 @12:16AM (#50015935)
Most newer keyboards I know have a toggle so the CMD and ALT switch in software. I had to switch from Mac to Win and Linux so often that I simply kept my CMD key where Super or Win is located and got used to it. Still sometimes weird when I use an actual Mac keyboard.
I also don’t know how big this problem really is. You practically have two ways of creating a repo. Local first and push or create a repo remote with Readme etc and clone.

The submodule issue is a different beast. But that one is currently a problem as well when a person choose a http url or ssh url. I have some extra git configs to normalize everything to ssh for instance.

Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @10:44AM (#49816976)
Might want to visit Budapest. The charm are the old trams etc. and they have tons of modern cars.
Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @06:12AM (#49813847)
My understanding of the initial commend “But then you are on a bus” was a negative one to buses and or public transport in general.

I know the geology of SF and drove both bridges a few times myself but was always lucky to not end up in traffic. I would also always prefer the train over the bus. But currently where I live this also is put to the question. I live in Berlin and we have a great public transport network which at the moment struggles a bit on multiple fronts. This happens every few years at least in my experience.

I like to try out the public transport situation in different cities for my own comparison. Funny enough one of the best times I had was driving the metro in D.C. Met a very energetic metro employee who explained the machines and the system :).

Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @02:14AM (#49812311)
Yeah. I took the bus in NY and SF and I’m also not sure why the complained. Maybe because I’m a tourist but especially in SF I had always nice interactions with the driver. Mind you I took the Bus in the City Centers. Is it that much worse in the outskirts or is it just the concept of taking a Bus with multiple other people the problem?
Re:Uefa pursuing criminal legal action against Infantino on Thursday August 27, 2026 @12:38PM (#49467561)
I see what you did there with the 250 years. I just assume you were not talking about football anymore.
German here. What I understand is that we Germans use the folding technique instead of crumbling the paper. And we love our sweet 4 layered paper so everything is super soft down there. I can say growing up the first years of my life in the GDR with literal recycled paper as toilet paper, that I wouldn’t go back to that. But I see especially with kids etc that we overuse toilet paper. But I can only speak for my family. Toilet paper usage etc isn’t a dinner conversation topic.
Re:Death to px, long live ch on Sunday August 23, 2026 @01:41PM (#49410769)
I’m somewhat out of the loop but I remember the time everybody switched from px to em’s. When I came back to CSS for a short while it was px again and behold it worked for 4K screens. To be honest I didn’t really liked the usage of em and actually prefer px.
Re:Sydney Marathon medal mistakenly depicts Munich stadium on Sunday August 23, 2026 @10:40AM (#49409217)
Yes. Or in case of Berlin where whole places and other places get renamed when the sponsor changes. O2 Arena -> Mercedes Benz Arena -> Uber Arena. Even other locations around it changed as well as the plaza name.
Re:Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @08:06AM (#49181684)
Microsoft constantly deactivated my hotmail account due to no usage (I only created it when buying the XBox at launch back then and them insisting it needs to be hotmail). So they deactivated the account. I can still log in with my credentials on my old Xbox but not via web or newer Xbox models due to TFA which I can’t setup.
Re:Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc on Tuesday August 04, 2026 @10:16AM (#49169349)
Reminds me of the fact that I lost my Xbox account because they shutdown hotmail. My account is working on my Xbox but the password reset options are not supported by the OS on the Xbox. And I can’t change the email of the account from an Xbox. The support wasn’t helpful either. I read that somebody with the same issue got them to change the mail by logging in and out while on the phone. I don’t have the energy to jump through these hoops.
Re:BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising on Saturday August 01, 2026 @02:14AM (#49131592)
Just saying that these brands have different offerings in different countries. Here in Germany all big brands: Audi, BMW, Mercedes and VW etc have offerings from low lever to luxury car.
And every checking runs a whole CI run?

We had it internally with our teams that open a PR to then push like 10-20 more commits but never actually interested in the client builds etc. turned out they opened the PR as a checkmark/ way to share the current state. We set cooldowns and auto cancel for the ci. And then there is the developer who uses the CI compute to run tests instead of running them locally for various reasons. We had to remind that compute isn’t for free.

Re:DaVinci Resolve 21 on Thursday June 04, 2026 @11:53PM (#48407720)
Great that it works for you. I gave my daughter my old Canon 70D and she needed a way to process pictures. She only has an iPad and I didn’t push her to adobe ^^. She produces great results with Photomator.

I need to do the jump myself to something better. The last update of Lightroom classic runs so damn slow on my Mac mini (M4). Was super annoyed yesterday while working on some pictures.

Re:DaVinci Resolve 21 on Thursday June 04, 2026 @08:00AM (#48397428)
Stacked you mean each node works on the input from another nodes output? So I could add a node to make green blue and another node to make blue green again? Because Lightroom mask only work on the base adjustment. Sounds good if I got this right. I wanted to play around with it anyways.
Re:DaVinci Resolve 21 on Wednesday June 03, 2026 @11:55PM (#48393590)
Lightroom maps support color range and luminance range. Can you explain what the difference is?
Re:DaVinci Resolve 21 on Wednesday June 03, 2026 @11:53PM (#48393563)
I think non native speakers may not have a good feeling how charged a word or phrase is.

In their defense you only spoke about dropping your raw workflow for something simpler not that you looked for a special HDR RAW support.

I know it’s Apple and may not what you look for but does Photomator tick these boxes?

Sorry the article is paywalled and I reacted to the comment about sanded surfaces. I remember seeing documentation or other nature documentation’s about the shark skin effect. I had the chance to touch a shark and a ray in an aquarium but never felt the shark skin foil. I assume the properties would be the same though.
I thought that shark skin foil was a thing for years. Where they tried to emulate the micro roughness of shark skin.
Most sandbox systems today, take seatbelt from Apple for instance, only strip permissions. If your extensions without internet access calls a tool that needs it, boom access denied or worse, weird network issues.

One would need some kind of ring system where less privileged processes can call higher privileged processes with their own sandbox permissions.

Re:Starship V3 on Tuesday May 12, 2026 @11:36PM (#48117477)
But for the shuttle each title was kinda unique and had a specific spot. If they managed to find a shape where you don’t have to mark each tile but can just pull them from a box for replacement is a huge win. Maybe even have some spares and allow them to be replaced during an EVA. This was all not really feasible with the Spaceshuttle.
Re:I'm going back to writing code by hand on Monday May 11, 2026 @06:57AM (#48093387)
I ran quite early into the same issues with my rust pet projects. Single structs with tons of Option<T> and validation methods etc. enums for type fields combined with says optional fields in the same layer so accessor methods all return Option<T>.

I add now a long list of instructions how to work with the type system and some do’s and don’ts. I don’t see myself as a vibe coder. I actually read the damn code and instruct the ai to get to my level of taste.
