Re:Why are we so pessimistic? on Monday June 17, 2019 @09:38PM (#20209090)
You know, all those in this thread revealing their membership of Those-Who-Walk-Uphill-Both-Ways are going to get a serious reprimanding.

But yeah I would have to agree with you. Family history of the same kind of poverty shopping. Making a contest of the lowest gas and grocery prices with the membership, food bank and all that. I shat myself when I got an NES from the pawn shop for my birthday once. It certainly instills something in the brain.

I mean I'm still the guy that subsists on plain fruits & veggies, noodles, rice, beans, plain oats and the occasional indulgence of pizza and steak. But I'm also not worried or hurting for anything currently and am happier than I've ever been previously. Which I imagine is optimism, and other concerns tend to make other events kind of feel like noise.

The cumulative inability to relate to pop culture or current events really wrecks my networking efficiency I feel like. I'm not sure I should be so unaware about the news and encroaching issues. But oh well. The ultimately important things have a way of finding themselves to oneself I guess.

Re:Google Is Taking Charge of the RCS Rollout on Monday June 17, 2019 @07:17PM (#20208254)
Not to be conspiratorial but I find all of this to be pretty intentional. It's currently very hard for me to stay on T-Mobile's legacy (i.e. true) PAYG plan which only supports regular texts. I often have to ask people I'm doing business with to send things as a regular text because emojis and pics don't download.

Looking at the overview on wikipedia and gsma, this thing is feature creeped to the absolute rim before overflowing. Including parts of the specification for APIs and app integration if I'm reading it correctly.

Frankly, if a corporation wanted to lay the groundwork for itself to be the private contractor for when the government wants to make use of the data that can be hoovered from these open channels. It would look a hell of a lot like Google. All this feature creep in abundance is a great way to lock people into centralized monolithic apps or force them into new revenue streams (again, they're already trying it with my PAYG plan for MMS).

I could take it to its greatest logical conclusion especially considering the API, app integration & visible protocol fingerprint and just say this is a great way to introduce WeChat by Google.

I hope this doesn't sound irrational. But I for one find it irrational that I'm even in this position with regular texting versus MMS. It's like phone carriers are the only ones allowed to have shitty interoperability of this kind. Getting really tired of it. Also I hope you're right that their fuckups are resulting in lower adoption, because 68 (including T-Mobile) carriers have already signed onto the Universal Profile part of the spec:

Well I'll say one thing about the "heat", I didn't expect this thread to get so noisy and thought my post was going to defuse it so now I regret that. I thought I was being nice.

Anyway, speaking of projection. I'm not the one that said a single thing about domain or work-life balance. You're making up stuff in your brain based on your just-stated tendency towards a false sense of superiority. Which is funny given the point of my damned original post.

Whatever. I give up. I'm only here because the site for and by hackers doesn't have an account delete button.

On the contrary, I'm the only one not judging this guy by his profession. As a result their mindset and platitudes look just as pitiable and silly to me than if he were to make a post saying that he works as a grocery clerk.

P.S. Sincere apologies to clerks, you deal with the shit and are respected. Just using as a point about perception and weird notions of what people wear as badges of honor.

Edit: I also don't believe Feynman or any other scientist would define his life by the uni he researched for just as I don't believe an artist would define himself by his job with coca-cola

I think the downvotes (that's what gray means right?) are people's way of saying that the personal narrative that defines your life is so boring that your job is the only place you can achieve feelings like that. I feel bad for you so won't downvote. But I'd suggest finding something for that narrative that doesn't coincidentally mean handing your life over to the guy you work for.

He certainly won't complain that your sense of worth is defined by the firm. It's a lopsided semi-co-dependent relationship and kinda weird. I know people like yourself and respect the ethic but there's surely a way to direct that to your own life instead of defining the satisfaction by how well you make another guy money.

Also, the exceptionalism is needless, generalized and is talking down to foreigners as if they don't have similar work ethics. You're not making us look good as Americans by claiming that you'll bend over backwards for bossman and break your back doing so in order to spend an extra dollar at the company store.

And inconsistently moderated. Actual HN staff seem to hover between not caring about the obvious tactics at play - even calling it a "trope" a if we were in a movie, or flagging posts calling out the tactic while the originals stay preserved (as do the ensuing derailed conversations)

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20169100

I tried emailing this same staffer to get my account deleted to escape this encroaching noise. They really don't give a shit. I'll be surprised if your post is still here later.

“Politicians need religion even more than a hermit in retreat. If a hermit acts out of bad motivation, he harms no one but himself. But if someone who can directly influence the whole of society acts with bad motivation, then a great number of people will be adversely affected.”

The day I discovered this quote was a rather striking moment. I find it continues to be relevant. Especially when one considers the demagoguery and celeb - I don't just mean TV, note how certain politicians/bootlickers are treated right now - worship that we are effectively replacing establishment religion.

Also important to note that they both use religion. Who puts money in the tithe plate? Not the megachurch preacher. I am a former christian and I struggle to see many differences between a preacher and a politician. Especially celebrity evangelists.

When I see articles like this I can almost predict the steps of the big, bad independent cowboys of the world showing up in a related thread. I fully expect them to be the first to come on their knees to the people forming collectives to more efficiently produce the same resources too.

I mean in and of themselves your steps aren't wrong per-se. It's just that things don't work out like you think and the people that call themselves confederates and encourage each other to be baby machines I imagine won't be very workable as a post-apocalyptic relationship. With outside groups or each other.

Meanwhile, these population centers tend to spring up around a social pillar for a reason and don't simply lose that robustness when the public works begin failing. People are way too quick to assume they're the only rational one surrounded by rabid beasts.

But keep on preppin', california cowboy (sorry couldn't resist, this sounds city boy af and you have it in your username).

Re:How Iceland recreated a Viking-age religion on Monday June 03, 2019 @06:18PM (#20089525)
You know, that's a good point. And I can't deny that now I'm probably locked into it by loose (/very/ loose) association. But yes I poorly chose my words, I'm sorry.

Your example of branding is appropriate because at this stage I can't see paganism as anything more than a satire religion in the vein of bob or FSM or hell even the Twilight fanbase while we're at it. The edginess is all equally adorable.

They have half-remembered christianity-mingled rituals and holy men, probably. Just like how the Church of the Subgenius has a preacher and gospel and we're all adherents of Bob or the FSM when praying that our code runs. Only difference is that they pretend that it has age and significance that - for all they know - could be the result of christian priests wiping their butt with old norse practices as any correct ritualistic lineage.

I wish they would be honest about the fact that they are satirical. Things already readily not taken seriously are anathema to the fascist. So it wouldn't even be an issue if they were honest. No one is trying to appropriate Bob's face to be an edgy viking. Maybe they should get their branding together so people like me don't have to clarify it being for entertainment value only.

Re:How Iceland recreated a Viking-age religion on Monday June 03, 2019 @03:00PM (#20086903)
Perceived? You don't see why I would find someone responding to a bad faith link with another link to a $15 pamphlet about their religion offensive? Why should I treat that as anything else like how I'd treat a mormon operating in such a way.

Come on man. At least I put my money where my mouth is and showed my real and inoffensive (albeit highly aesthetic and nerdy) attachment to these symbols and why such generalizations are pretty unfair to perpetuate.

Of course, someone immediately ignored the point and judged me by the skin. But wouldn't have posted if it were unexpected. The quality of passionate social discourse on HN remains ass, world goes on.

Re:How Iceland recreated a Viking-age religion on Monday June 03, 2019 @02:34PM (#20086561)
A videogame and book reference with crocs and PJs on? Yeah, seems even more foolish that I feel more identity with that look than real practitioners of its inspiration apparently do. :o
Re:How Iceland recreated a Viking-age religion on Monday June 03, 2019 @01:49PM (#20085958)
Such expert casting aside of personal responsibility and character that - I would assume - defines the self-sufficient individual who can dance and play hard that defines a heathen.

How does it feel knowing that a conservative catholic (tolkien) and ex-christian atheist southern american latino (me) care about - and wears - your aesthetic better than any nordic native or heathen in this thread so far? My convictions seem to be stronger despite this being the spiritual equivalent of how tourists use egyptian hieroglyphics.

Don't worry, I'll have flavor and force of will for your religion's (objectively speaking, very awesome) aesthetic SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO.

https://i.imgur.com/EX3fLpS.jpg

Is this a thing vikings did by the by? No wonder the confusion between what ritual survived as pagan and what became christian and vice-versa is so muddled. It's like lifting pollen from fields! Just straight up, boot-to-face subservience. Tsk tsk.

Re:How Iceland recreated a Viking-age religion on Monday June 03, 2019 @12:47PM (#20085266)
(Foreward: I get the point you're trying to make, so please don't interpret as argumentative at you, forgottenpass)

I enjoy Tolkien's success. This is the point I'm trying to make. I'm a bystander here and would not even be aware of pagans beyond a superficial level had it not been specifically for the fact that their adherents have failed so badly at keeping their own tribe in check. I found out about all of this long after I got the tattoos. But I still have to feel like a party to it for no reason but superficial resemblance of runic alphabets.

And yet I'm the only one that seemed to have been interested to expand upon my position so far. There's at least 3 heathens here by my count. I guess I'm fine with the notion that I'm a bigger badass than a self-proclaimed viking in this sense. Why shouldn't I call them cowards if I'm more willing to step up for a fictional mythos than one they consider a real part of their daily lives?

P.S. I am doing part of the hard work in defending their reputation for them by making a point about context. I will not feel like a bad person for wearing Cirth runes. And they will be with me forever, and I will happily discuss the difference with anyone who asks me. And when I do explain the difference it will start with "It's not actually norse or pagan, I know what you mean but those are dying niche religions used by rednecks and slavic meth heads, it sucks but you can't judge a writing system by it".

Re:How Iceland recreated a Viking-age religion on Monday June 03, 2019 @12:20PM (#20084907)
Oh yes you guys have made it abundantly clear you're not bothered. So much so that I understand now how that appropriation happened so swiftly that it leaked over into sides of the fence only tenuously related to paganism. Resulting in groups dedicated to damage control stemming from how not bothered you were about the problem initially. You just let anyone walk all over you passively and respond in ways similar to Christians - but less organized and somehow less spirited. Ironic given what the Christians did in my historical recollection.

Not really a viking or heatenistic attitude, when you think about it. I suppose that's why the fabled nordic hardiness is just that: fabled~

Re:How Iceland recreated a Viking-age religion on Monday June 03, 2019 @12:08PM (#20084735)
You are a heathen, yes? I want you to compare this excuse of a response - devoid of passion, identity or character to show people why being a heathen is wonderful - to my argument above in this thread. An argument made by a simple LOTR fanboy who has to deal with Cirth being inspired by writing systems related to paganism in only an auxilary way.

I made the case that it's the height of foolishness to cede an entire spirituality and the foolishness only increases the more severe the generalizations get.

You linked a book. Like a christian links a bible study guide when they can't formulate the words required to express their point.

Good to know personal responsibility is present in heathens at volume similar to the christians I grew up with. Do better. For the sake of your religion and Tolkien, and for the sake of the ink I got to celebrate him.

Random viking-ish armor sellers on imgur do a better job than pagans at large in defending their spirituality if this thread is anything to go by. I am not joking in the slightest either. https://i.imgur.com/AZD4njS.jpg

Weak. Very weak.

Re:How Iceland recreated a Viking-age religion on Monday June 03, 2019 @11:06AM (#20083887)
Regardless of whether or not the poster above was bringing up that tired comparison in good faith. The point must still be made.

The ADL specifically says to evaluate all things in context. Note the similarities in the caution they advise while evaluating here. The people - the cowards, the milk drinkers, the tools of the christian church and establishment - in this thread making the unwise choice of submitting their spirituality to peckerheads wholesale. Would do well to take note of that advisory:

https://www.adl.org/education/references/hate-symbols/okay-h...

https://www.adl.org/education/references/hate-symbols/runic-...

I'm getting sick and tired of feeling bad for loving Tolkien because these so-called heathens and vikings are such fucking cowards. I'm in this thread giving your spirituality more defense than you are and I DON'T EVEN CARE ABOUT IT.

Re:How Iceland recreated a Viking-age religion on Monday June 03, 2019 @09:54AM (#20083064)
This kind of thinking is why I have to dread the day someone calls me a white supremacist because of my Cirth tattoos.

It's not even relevant to your viking nonsense. It's just LOTR. But people are being so submissive toward the peckerheads that they're just handing over entire spiritualities without a fight apparently and making it worse for people like me who aren't even in the fight.

It's honestly pathetic. Heh.

Edit: More on the point of being pathetic. Wouldn't the ancient pagans or vikings hate how pathetically submissive people are being here? Historical vikings weren't isolationist or racist from what evidence we have. By their nature they really couldn't be to grow their tribe.

What next? Are you going to settle and accept that occultism and satanism is for white supremicists too? Further play into the hands of the Christian church?

Manowar uses pagan symbology and runes in many of their songs, it's a very common thing in heavy metal. Are you going to play into the hands of the Christian church and let that be considered white supremacist too? Where does this cowardice end?

Furthermore, even though at first I found paganism and viking lore highly interested. I'm beginning to sour of it. But purely because its adherents allowed it to be labeled in this way and therefore make me feel like I did something wrong for getting something from a fictional book. This is spiritual cowardice on a level so profound it affected fiction. Pathetic. Ugly and pathetic.

I feel you re. integration and connectiveness. I do not envy you for having issues. But I can say that if I waited until I wasn't "depressed" (what does this mean in the wider scope of our stories we tell each other? When you can't know good without the bad? I think we're all depressed else we wouldn't know happiness) I likely would have dropped off a chair instead of dropping some caps and stems.

You have to understand where these mental hangups are coming from sometimes. And it is my most sincere hope the OP can see what all of us are trying to say before letting the abyss take them. I so hope they know we've felt it pulling. Even if they aren't interested in drugs in the least I hope they know they're not alone in any of this.

I'm not a bad enough dood to explore much of these new drugs. Mostly experienced in the classic 3 and once DMT (hope to again someday when I figure out how to make the rig work). But from what I've seen in this thread and vague posts in the past it seems like ketamine offers a very empathic experience.

I'll never forget the day I figured out how to cry again, cry healthily, thanks to these things. Like a ghost of all my missing emotions I sloughed off in the distant past came back to me. It is wonderful.

And can people please, please stop the senseless cynicism in this subthread. I'm being reminded why I stopped posting on HN. No matter what your personal position is. It is ultimately irrelevant to this OP and the energy you're putting into handwringing can easily be put into reminding them of the fact that they are not alone. There's someone right there with them and sharing in it for one reason or another. And we all have a responsibility to take care of them in the same way we do our better selves.

Oh spare me. Not only do I not care to debate pseudo-intellectually in this fashion but my sample size is far beyond myself. Once again, cold cynicism doesn't make you cool. No more than unsubstantiated idealism.

Sorry man, your post has now been sucked into the toxic pit of horrible people both male and female. Also known as twitter. I tried to set the record straight, but alas I have less followers. You are now a horrible person and your typo is forever enshrined.

Agreed. I get by without having things I'm used to on my linux system like strace, lsof and so forth with it. It has a pane that displays pretty much everything with a handle from non-IP IPC sockets, normal sockets, files, registry, threads, DLLs and even obscure stuff like event handles and security context tokens.
Re:Ars’ small taste of no-tech travel on Wednesday January 21, 2015 @06:16PM (#8926455)
I have to be honest. This and other recent articles from them have convinced me that Ars is staffed by 18 year olds. 18 year olds with little life experience at that.
