Re:Ask HN: Is your company forcing use of AI? on Tuesday July 01, 2025 @03:32AM (#44431505)
This years management goals have been crafted with the help of our in-house AI assistant.

The development and project teams I primarily work with are all encouraged to identify suitable use cases for GenAI. Most development teams have already started trials with AI assisted coding but reported a relatively low adoption rate of 5–10%.

Switzerland uses mostly 64-96kbps as per this outdated(?) list https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_DAB-Sender_in_der_Sc...
Re:Shouldn't FROM come before SELECT in SQL? (2011) on Thursday January 25, 2024 @09:51AM (#39130129)
SAP ABAP's OpenSQL allowes you to write both:

     SELECT FROM scarr
       FIELDS carrid, carrname
       ORDER BY carrid
       INTO TABLE @DATA(result1).
and

     SELECT carrid, carrname
       FROM scarr
       ORDER BY carrid
       INTO TABLE @DATA(result2).

Re:12% of Americans eat half the nation's beef on Friday September 01, 2023 @05:46AM (#37348664)
They are also poorer and less likely to be able to afford beef on a daily basis. But I'm sure that is a mere coincidence and in no shape or form relevant to the outcome of the study at hand.
Re:Google executive fired after female boss groped him on Monday January 30, 2023 @04:41AM (#34577695)
Why go through all the trouble when they could just make you quit?
Yes, AI will no doubt relieve Software Developers from the tedious task of glueing together existing libraries to solve clearly definable problems.
Re:Lex Fridman Podcast #309 – John Carmack on Friday August 05, 2022 @01:46AM (#32352212)
Thank you for this comment. The host took me by surprise.

I saw John Carmack and 5 hours and just thought: "Wow, those two must have really hit it off somewhere". Listening to his questions was a struggle. I wish I could have only listened to Johns answers.

Re:Poll: Switching from WhatsApp on Thursday January 07, 2021 @09:49AM (#25671649)
LINE seems to be the predominate messenger in all of Asia. I find it highly interesting to see even the Japanese rely on this Korean Plattform. Do they not fear a service blockage based on their countries political relationship?
SAP Developer/Customer here.

Does that mean most people on HN work for companies either too small for or too competent to outsource an ERP system?

It's really sad to see that all the native options like druid got dismissed for being "not mature enough". Guess I'll stick to WebAssembly and CLI Apps.
>We did this knowingly

Great, but the parent poster is hiding(again, rightfully so) their planned leave from their future employer.

They mainly hire people to replace others that quit/retired or to fill a new position created to support a team with a steadily growing workload. New hires are subject to a 3 month probation period during which both parties can end the contract at will. More than 80% of all positions are long term.

I would hope that someone looking for a long term employment at a company would be honest and upfront with something like a planned 1-year vacation. My only gripe with the parent poster is that they are hiding(rightfully so) this so close before their planned leave and thus do not appear serious about a long term employment at that company.

Wow, that sounds like straight up fraud to me. Do companies in America get financial support from the government for employees on pregnancy leave?
Translating one language to another by matching words of the new language to words of the language you already know is good in practice but gets in the way of fluency.
You actually describe my day job pretty accurately. SAP based legacy systems where everything from system variables to customer codebase is this weird mix of English and German. Strict project guidelines and code review sessions can only catch part of this mess before it's rolled into production.

We have junior devs come and go that simply look problems up online, because they are able to translate their questions into proper English, that the senior German-only devs would spend days trying to work out by themselves. Or they somehow find the same solutions online but can't make sense of what Google Translate spits out for them. It's equally hilarious and sad to see a junior dev being used as a seniors LetMeGoogleThatForYou.

Yes, knowing English enough to read/understand the latest books in your field and being able to look up solutions online is absolutely necessary.

While I don't recommend it, you can definitely use Japanese and Cyrillic characters in Unicode compatible languages. There are people out there translating docs of popular libraries. Heck, even 3rd rate Blender books get translated into Japanese but they rarely make it into stores before the version used is already out of date.

Re:Low Level Bit Hacks You Absolutely Must Know on Saturday May 12, 2018 @07:18AM (#17053516)
Isn't it sad that most of todays junior programming curricula favour copy+pasting 10s of main() method only "applications" over explaining data types and some basic bit twiddling?
So your fictional boss trusts you enough to allow work from home but somehow does not trust you when you propose to work early mornings and late evenings?

I can not comment on the hourly freelancer part, but as I understand the US law that keeps getting cited in this thread: "it's illegal to require an independent contractor to be on site or to even set hours".

I guess there was some Swiss bias in what I wrote. Apologies for living in a tiny country.
Working at home offers very little protection from the pains of working for the wrong company.
A shared-workspace campus for you and your friends would work out then? You can picture it as a shared-workspace town if that is more appealing to you. Living quarters, parks, etc. on one side of the highway. A shared-workspace campus hosting multiple companies/teams on the other. Living and working stays strictly separate, everyone has a short commute and you still have all project members available on-site at the same time to reliably work together and gasp actually meet up when required.

To answer your question, I do not want to bring work into my home. BYOD resolves most of the factors that would make me want to provide my own office at home.

May I ask how you currently manage to live close to your family and friends and (because I have to assume you are surrounded by like-minded individuals) their families and their friends and so on? Frankly, I find this very unrealistic, but maybe that's because my friends and family are spread out across the globe.

With the population exploding and space to build new houses growing ever so scarcely I can not imagine a long-term future in which working from home would be profitable. Instead of working from home, living at work seems to be the more logical step forward.

Personally I'd prefer living at a shared-workspace or company campus as long as work and living facilities are clearly separate.

While I agree with your sentiment, this is probably the worst solution for people with long commutes.
Internal IT here. Points 1-3 are all very understandable from a customers point of view and do not strike me as sabotaging. Your other points are not relevant.
Re:Chevrolet to offer unlimited data plan with cars on Friday March 03, 2017 @09:24AM (#13782978)
Same here, also on a 6 character gmail address.

I regularly get people applying for loans, who send me A LOT of personal information, because of a typo in a spam mail. Contacting the responsible loan company, who looks pretty fake and shady, didn't lead to any success.

Once had a gentlemen in his 70ies contact me about my profile on a dating site for seniors and get lots of car advertisement addressed to someone with my initials, who sometimes does eBanking, is 40+ years married to a wife whoms father died 3 years ago, etc. etc.

Needless to say, I love mail filters.

Re:Efficient game updates on Tuesday February 21, 2017 @09:09AM (#13695516)
How exactly did Blizzard "blow it" with this design decision?

Using their customers bandwidth to take off some load of their own patch servers during peak times is (imho) a pretty good use of BitTorrent. You can also quite easily disable this feature in their launcher app.

I have always been a fan of the Pirate game puzzle. https://omohundro.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/stewart99_a_pu...
Skimming over the title and the URL, I was hoping to find a Bonsai care/maintenance contractor network.

How do you reach your target audience with a company name and URL like yours? Could you provide a sample contract without the need to enter a valid E-Mail address?

Re:Norwegian butter crisis (2011) on Wednesday May 20, 2015 @05:51AM (#9575318)
I have been to Japan twice during this time and, as a tourist, didn't really notice any of this. Is this why seemingly all the butter in Japans restaurants is imported from Australia?
