I've honestly found GPT4 to be fantastic for every recipe I've tried. I list what I own, say generally what I want, and say either use what I have, or minimize the number of new things I need to buy, and tell me how to make the thing. The instructions are far more legible than SEO spam recipe sites.

Not as far as who the two majority voting shareholders are.

VR. Super constrained.
I read that this legal technique has also been used in Japan as a proxy for Gay Marriage.

I've never thought about it this way. Cut off the left side of the bell, rotate the graph by 90 degrees, and you can see that the high-sigma members of the distribution take all the reward and recognition in a limited attention economy.
Funny you say that. For Elder Scrolls 4 (Oblivion), the devs claimed to have built something like this. Where all the NPCs had their own wants and needs and schedules, like The Sims. Everyone needed to eat, but not everyone had a job. So some NPCs resorted to theft. But since crime and witnessing crime was already a system programmed in to the game, this often meant that by the time a player arrived at a town, everyone was dead. Some beggar took a bread roll from a shop keeper, who alerted the guards, who confronted the beggar, who responded with violence, who started a scuffle, which had collateral damage (many people have fireball spells), which lead to a free for all of death. It ruined the game, and they had to scrap most of the system.

I was just looking up the profiles of the astronauts selected for the future Artemis Moon Missions.

These people have resumés that look like they rolled a 20 for every one of their stats.

"America's Finest".

"Crash" is not something you want an aerial explosive to do.

The original reason for invasion (2014) was access to the sea. Logistics are crucial for an economy.

I'm ex-Meta and now at Google and while they have 'hg' as a wrapper around their fig system, it's lacking so many of the Sapling features I am sad and frustrated occasionally.
Re: on Thursday November 17, 2022 @03:45PM (#33645400)
In a way it has. Just not directly. Everyone is abandoning (for example on iOS) imperative style (Cocoa and UIKit) for React style (RxSwift, ComponentKit, SwiftUI). It's the biggest shift in native UI programming in more than a decade.

The only one I could imagine having had a chance would be Sony. They had a rather well built out OS on the Playstation 3 with lots of modern online features.

Ensures that only the most hardcore mascohists remain, who you can abuse for huge productivity extraction vs the rest-and-vest type.

Depending on your definitions, it is.

IMO the main issue with writing HTML is it takes a two-armed key-chord to do a < or > char.

So is mine. Which company?

And yet, if he hadn't put USB on the first iMac, how many more years would we as a species have had to wait for widespread adoption of USB by peripheral makers? PC makers were perfectly happy to keep putting parallel port and serial port connectors on motherboards for like 10 more years. In fact my 2019 AM3 board can still plug in a mouse from 1992.
I'm no aerospace engineer, but the flux through the air, driving resistance, seems obviously higher the more you move away from the shape of a missile.
Maybe if you had it in stereo 3D and gave the passengers a VR display.
Re:What Is an Eigenvalue? on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @03:14PM (#33537208)
My grades in undergrad would have been so much better if Youtube had existed. Oh well.
Re:What Is an Eigenvalue? on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @03:12PM (#33537191)
God knows how I passed 4 years of engineering math without ever being able to describe to anyone what eigen* actually are, but I think that's actually the norm.
Re:What Is an Eigenvalue? on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @03:08PM (#33537139)
It's been 15 years since I was in my EE degree, and I learned all this stuff to the point of intuition. Since then I've been a C-monkey at megacorp and not doing any real math beyond simple geometry.

Thanks for tickling the old neurons.

Heavy Metal ruined the clean perfection of our fancy math devices, you say? That's pretty metal.
Re:NYC jail complex to be restored into citywide green energy hub on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @02:49PM (#33536902)
What you're describing is our national problem. People are more aligned with either extreme than they used to be (likely due to the internet exposing people to echo chambers), and are less tolerant of "giving the enemy a win" by collaborating to do SOMETHING. So stasis and hate are the outcome.

Example: I agree with Republicans on some things, like prosecuting thieves which my local (Seattle) Democrats don't care about. But if I were to publicly state my interest in anything right-aligned, my peers would round me all the way up and think I hate women or something.

Re:NYC jail complex to be restored into citywide green energy hub on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @02:46PM (#33536874)
The social contract in America is different. Many/Most people do not regard other citizens as their brethren who deserve better lives. They are adversaries and competitors. Everyone starts (ideally) with a blank slate and makes their lives what they will with minimal guidance or force by the state. If someone makes bad decisions that lead to criminality, they need to be eliminated from the public.

So the thinking goes.

Reforming the justice process depends on the will of the electorate. Since the above sentiment is so core to the American culture and values, it's not likely to change much.

Vanity Publishing is basically the entire economic force behind Social Media, and even traditional media.

Inventor: I made a thing! I want people to know about it so they will want it, and pay me for my cool thing.

Public: We can't notice you over the million other things to pay attention to.

Inventor: Hey Mr. Zuckerberg, here's $100. MAKE THEM NOTICE ME.

I eagerly await a fully ML generated ballet choreography with a dozen participants. Maybe 15 years from now.

The super hard problem is driving a robotic body, vs rendering an animation of the above.

Re:Meta lays off 11,000 people on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @01:53PM (#33536203)
I'm pretty sure Scorpio's lair of paradise was inspired by Microsoft in Redmond. In the 90s, it was legendarily posh with how well the people were treated. Nobody in corporate america had that quality of fitness centers, on-site cafes, etc.

Google was the next to up the ante in mid-2000s with things like daycare, a ball pit, food, drycleaning. All equally mind-blowing to the populace who expected a workplace would have an elevator, and a coffee machine nobody refills.

Re:Is React impacted by Meta layoff? on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @01:45PM (#33536077)
Former long-time mobile eng at Meta here: RN is considered by most internally to be hot garbage and very unpleasant to work with.

They have 2 or 3 other React-like internal frameworks that most of the apps are made with. ComponentKit is the main one for the Blue App, and IIRC that's open source.

Re:The Lie That Facebook Sold You on Tuesday November 08, 2022 @02:26PM (#33523138)
It's worth examining how much of the current failure and stalemating in the US government is the deliberate product of mass foreign psy-op campaigns, conducted significantly via social media, to undermine the quality of the electoral field, and the electorate itself.
