Re:Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free on Sunday September 27, 2026 @08:39AM (#49866178)
I dread the day which will certainly eventually come, when Google disables my account for some bullshit reason. So many things will stop working all at once, and there practically no way I can expedite restoring it
It's not just that; there's a new capability unlocked. You can now have self driving cars charge at remote places and come back without human interaction. Imagine you live in a place with no grid power
Re:Don't Be Nice on Sunday September 20, 2026 @07:28AM (#49774726)
Oh no, it only works one way. When one starts signaling virtue, there's nothing wrong he can possibly do
Re:Building a Linux GPU Driver for the M4 Mac Mini in One Month on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @06:12AM (#49724290)
Why this thread reads like it's from Reddit?
The system of capitalism works fine with one exception: it doesn't handle negative value. And this is what's being exploited here. You can lose customer's data and it's their problem. Borrow, take risk, lost money, and declare corporate bankruptcy - no personal loss. Destroy environment - say sorry and that's it. That's not free market. When CEOs have their personal assets taken, and kidneys removed to pay for the corporate debts - this is when things start changing
Re:Operation Smart Kettle – Börzels Blog on Sunday September 13, 2026 @07:42AM (#49682887)
I have a govee kettle which has a limited Bluetooth support, which is mostly used to configure WiFi, but can also turn kettle on and off and reports temperature. Not sure if this is interesting to anybody, but if yes I can wrap it up in GitHub project
No matter how much the business makes, at some point their stock price comes up to the equilibrium with the rest of market. And since for CEO to get bonus he needs stock to go up, the businesses inevitably start applying dirty tricks at one point or another. That's just a system
Re:Mathematicians want proof OpenAI didn't use their work on Saturday September 12, 2026 @02:39PM (#49675661)
I did not say a thing about attribution. This specific case might be a slam-dunk. The takeaway I got however was that the methods mathematicians use - they wanted some sort of rights to it. I no longer can access the article to quote prompted me to understand it that way, but to me that screams we are now approaching the next level of absurdity in patenting
Re:Mathematicians want proof OpenAI didn't use their work on Thursday September 10, 2026 @07:48AM (#49642153)
Do I understand it right that people now claim an ownership of the actual mathematical methods? What next, people patenting the letters and the numbers? And then the sounds? This starts going ridiculous.
Re:I haven't lost a customer service fight in seven months on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @03:36PM (#49632897)
Laws would not fix the root cause, which is: world became too globalized, and that brought an onslaught of bad actors. Unless some sort of social score system is introduced, it will be very hard to make a quick decision whether someone makes a claim in good faith. But then everybody loses their privacy and ultimately their agency, which arguably many of us already lost to google and facebook. I don't think there is a simple soilution.
Re:Following legal advice, the Nitter project will continue on Sunday September 06, 2026 @02:32PM (#49589423)
Latter is probably a factor, because merely being right doesn't mean you won't run out of money while defending yourself from lawyers
I can't agree more strongly with this statement. It is mind-blowing how can it be socially acceptable to treat other people's confidential data so mindlessly

We should have a law which penalizes businesses for leaking other people's private data

Got John's driver license exposed? Write him $1k cheque. Second time this happened? Make it $3k. And another 1% of his assets, since you put them at risk. $10k in the bank? That's extra $100. Guy has property worth 500k? Too bad for you, that's another 5 thou.

And no blaming sub-contractors either. You hired them to do validation and they leaked data? Too bad, must have verified that they are reliable. This is when all of these Hertzies and Targets and Fedexes start thinking twice before storing confidential data. Why do they need to hold on to your driver's license? I know why. They hope to make some extra cash by datamining it. Well, get your checkbook ready then.

You are selling alcohol and wanna make sure I'm older than 21? You don't need to scan ID. You definitely don't need to store it. You CHOOSE to store it, and if you do, be prepared to pay if you expose it.

I wish it worked like that, but yeah, it never will

Chinese companies will train their models on all the data they can get their hands on. We can make USA companies act ethically, but then they would become irrelevant. The "safeguards" they were made to implement already makes them less useful than comparable Chinese models. A few more years on that trajectory and we won't have to worry about them anymore
Re:Your Racist Linux Distro Is Very Nice (Scott Jennings) on Thursday September 03, 2026 @05:57AM (#49548006)
At this point, the word "racism" was misused so much, that its meaning is completely lost. People use it to throw dirt at the ones they don't like, like monkeys throwing feces at each other.
Re:Hang on to Your Firefox on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @06:50PM (#49529351)
Wasn't something in their new ToS that turned many of us against them? I don't think advertisement was the issue
Perhaps this "free Palestine" decal gives them away...
DMCA is one of those bullshit laws which caused incalculable damage and we have not even started to address this gaping wound to stop the bleeding.
Re:OpenAI: Migrating to HTTPX2 on Friday August 28, 2026 @06:54PM (#49485209)
You no longer need to jump through the hoops in order to support your own root CA
Re:U.S. Sanctions Against the a/I Collective on Friday August 28, 2026 @06:51PM (#49485184)
You have been played. One might be thinking that anti-fascist means you are against fascism. But in reality the tactics and goals these people have are exactly the same as German and Italian fascist used
Re:Stopping the smart TV from being used against you on Friday August 28, 2026 @06:20PM (#49484952)
One day someone would reverse engineer the data TV feeds back to mother ship, and makes a fake driver to feed it garbage. Or not garbage. I could see some fun and profit a crowdfunded poison data could generate
Re:Credit Card Rewards Became a $9.2B Wealth Transfer on Thursday August 27, 2026 @09:55AM (#49464971)
I'm the one on receiving end of this game, and I'm sick and tired of playing it. I would so much rather pay full price and stop wasting my time looking what credit card to use for what purchase. This game benefits nobody but banks, and the total amount of time it wastes unproductively is staggering.
Re:Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS on Thursday August 27, 2026 @09:39AM (#49464767)
How is it that PayPal is still relevant? What does it even offer these days that other platforms don't do better?
Re:Xcancel and Nitter have been taken down on Thursday August 27, 2026 @09:37AM (#49464736)
It is censored
Re:Xcancel and Nitter have been taken down on Thursday August 27, 2026 @09:31AM (#49464668)
It is censored. They just don't tell you what they censor you for. You need to post, and then your account gets locked for bogus reason, and that's how you know what not no say. Like in Carlin's joke about words you are not supposed to say, NOBODY GIVES YOU A LIST!
Re:XCancel and Nitter are receiving C&D letters from XCorp on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @10:31AM (#49449918)
I recently came to conclusion that x is deliberately used for psyops. After I made a couple of posts questioning the benefits of data centers on X, account was suspended for "inauthentic behaviors", restored, then suspended again, restored, and now X won't let me access it until I install an app on my phone and jump through hoops. In other words, doxx myself, it will not work with app on throwaway phone. X is clearly not a beacon of free speech it pretends to be
It would be hilarious when some services become unavailable to 55+. The whole age check scam will dissolve in a heartbeat
Re:NIMBYs Aren't Just Shutting Down Housing on Friday February 06, 2026 @11:18AM (#46914731)
> They want to shut down our right to be heard in the first place.

there's no such right, never been. Just because one has a right to speak, doesn't make it an obligation for others to listen

Seems like a lot of people were getting a lot of easy money, and now they are unhappy.
