Re:My Daughter’s Homework Is Killing Me on Friday September 20, 2013 @09:21AM (#6417505)
nobody needs to do 3+ hrs of homework a night. when the load is so needlessly excessive, I think it's fine to cut some corners.

Re:How to Get a Job With a Philosophy Degree on Monday September 16, 2013 @07:39AM (#6392724)
higher education -- a period in which someone (you, the university and/or the state) spends a lot of money to enable your education -- is a huge luxury. It's a totally fair question to ask "what are you going to do with your philosophy degree?". If you're deeply passionate about your subject, then I think you can justify pursuing education purely for its own sake. But that simply does not apply to the vast majority of people studying philosophy/history/sociology etc.

I could already write and think before university and I had all the mathematical tools that most people ever use in real life. University taught me how to write an academic essay of adequate quality, but I don't think this is an essential life skill.

I think the effect is overstated by selection and attrition. if you're not capable of thinking logically in the first place you probably will not choose to study philosophy or fail out if you do.

Re:"I have come to find out what it's like to be dumb." on Thursday September 12, 2013 @06:47AM (#6373267)
once you are a fully developed adult, intelligence is normally very stable. an analogy with weight simply doesn't work: anybody can increase their weight simply by eating more, but we don't know of any reliable methods of massively increasing or reducing intellignece.
Re:Getting a Job in a Top Tier Quant Hedge Fund on Wednesday September 11, 2013 @03:14PM (#6369289)
most economists are not very serious about testing their models. this is reflected in the way the subject is normally taught.
Re:Hey Japan, What's Up With Your Startup Culture? on Saturday September 07, 2013 @04:12PM (#6346424)

you can't get good bone and muscle structure from a needle!
Re:Man and Superman on Monday September 02, 2013 @03:42PM (#6316759)
yes, cultural differences and training are important for sporting success. this still can hardly explain the pattern pointed out above...
