Re:UK to charge universities $1,200 per international student on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @05:54AM (#50256703)
Nor will that be a silver bullet although it will help. Do your research, people with wealth on average have less kids: why have 3 kids if you can be well traveled before youre 35? Theres too much shit to do.
Re:UK to charge universities $1,200 per international student on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:00AM (#50255490)
Your children per women is 1.4 are you really complaining that you can supplement with highly educated youth? If housing is an issue blame your government for shit policy.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:33PM (#50247663)
The big big difference is that you dont pay directly for google. Paying per token is more akin to going grocery shopping.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:32PM (#50247639)
You dont understand it, its open you can host in USA
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:39AM (#50245617)
Google is a bad comparison because they arent charging money. People swap streaming services all the time, analogously.

What a mess. Can anyone give me a bull-case for why you would ever pick C++ for a new project?

Re:Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed on Saturday October 24, 2026 @05:55AM (#50219679)
Gee I wonder why 20 dollars goes further. My harness tracks my spend with codex and I think its doable to spend 20 dollars daily on the 20 dollar plan. Maybe this is a good canary on the feasibility of all this.

Re:I Became a Citizen of Japan on Sunday October 18, 2026 @02:43AM (#50138499)
> If they just started allowing large numbers of people to become citizens, their culture, people, and society would rapidly shift in a way that their historical roots would have little place other than in the footnotes of history textbooks. Even their language itself could die.

I strongly believe that if people directly saw the money themselves that comes from not demographically declining (or other financial benefits from properly organized immigration), they would immediately abandon all this stuff. I dont think people actually care if money is on the table. Unfortunately its too vague a process currently.

Re:Switzerland proposes banning profiling-based ads to minors on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:17PM (#50090088)
Banning all personalized advertisements and predatory recommender systems seems like a good move for the whole population.
Re:The new (and vibe coded) Epic Games Launcher on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:15PM (#50090063)
Shit company with a one hit wonder in fortnite. The meta of games. Such a tonedeaf creation is unsurprising.
Re:AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:09PM (#50089924)
It means the end of ownership for AAA titles. GTA6 will be decomped in rust before it is released in some countries.

Re:Why aren't AI companies being charged for hacking? on Monday October 12, 2026 @11:19AM (#50057708)
The real answer is that the American government doesnt give a fuck
With this stuff I immediately wish I was more economically literate. Bare with me. Let’s say one of these labs can use agents to replicate work otherwise done by humans. This proves that anyone with agents can eventually do this, unfortunately I don’t think its a moat like a platform (like facebook) provides, given that everyone is leapfrogging each-other constantly. Thus, it kind of becomes a commodity / low margin business?

Depending on the type of output, the value immediately (?) goes to the electricity cost of the LLMs and the cost of materials. So: more “efficient”, but without a big margin, right? So its cheaper for the workers that remain working, other workers are displaced, and capital owners now have a super slim margin business which can be instantly replicated at a place where material cost are lower (?).

Thus, it almost seems like “value add” by humans would in this simplified view be vastly diminished, and all that remains is resource wealth. Pop the materials in on one end and let the AI manufacture the product. Great news for the third world assuming the USA doesn't invade them.

Also, whose the consumer? Or are we going back to a strange medieval time where consumers are not of concern?

I don’t know what to think

And to be honest this is also the sad part. It has become conceivable that we may at some point solve work. In theory: amazing! However it remains inconceivable that we have solved sharing between humans. So there is this feeling of looming doom. In some sense, if you cannot provide shareholder value, you have no value.
Youre doing something so special you need that?
Re:Vibecoding Photoshop: Time and pressure on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @01:39AM (#49988712)
Interesting consequence of LLM is that anyone can now decomp anything and put it on github, putting it in the training dataset, and now it can be more easily reproduced. Binary moat is dead, I expect many more moves towards cloud
Re:Sharing AI progress in mathematics on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @12:39AM (#49988244)
Can you explain it without reaching for lofty things like consciousness? To me stochastic parrots is literally how it works given that it’s “just” the most impressive data fit we’ve ever done. Apparently generating mathematics reasoning traces + verifying them with lean works super well.

Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @10:27AM (#49979051)
Look at the size of our capital markets. That is a suicidal strategy. We dont have to mimic US.

Investors, but also the government in allowing these companies to siphon electricity away passing the increased cost to the consumers

Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Thursday October 01, 2026 @11:55AM (#49923368)
In the case where it becomes commodified and american tech companies are making thin margins, and where european companies can then build their own data centers in a financially sustainable way. High margins arent a garuntee with this stuff in constrast to ads.

Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @05:37PM (#49914819)
The financials for Anthropic and OpenAI are likely borderline suicidal, google and co are publicly traded. Moreover, all innovations downstream to them dont they? Why not just stay slightly behind, especially given many have stake in those other companies?
