>Cryptocurrency has a few people like that but also a ton of get-rich-quick types

There are literally hundreds of millions of people who're into cryptocurrencies...and you clearly don't have a clue what kind of people are into it and to what degree. I'd suggest not to make up statements like this if you want your opinion to be taken seriously. FYI bypassing capital controls with cryptos does not necessarily mean "breaking the law". Learn a thing or two if you're going to spout nonsense.

What are you asking for exactly? Projects that see use but don't have a cryptocurrency/token behind them? Metamask, Opensea, Ledger, Oncyber..

And store it in a local bank with the economy on the verge of collapse and the government being what it is? You have no idea wtf you're talking about sir.

"That sounds objectively much worse than what we have now."

I love the nft haters who think they're sounding smart but sound like absolute morons to anyone who's done at least a few hours of oBjEcTiVe research into the space. And normally I'd take the time to educate but with attitude like this and a made up mind, nah hfsp.

>I dont think anyone has ever yet explained how this is meant to function as a currency.

It's a store of value. Worked fucking great for people who were fleeing shitty places on earth but most people on this board wouldn't know a god damn thing about that.

>Most holders of coin-wealth didn't earn it..

You're an idiot. You don't know how investments work and how it has nothing to do with "earning it".

Are you actually serious right now?

Re:An NFT without a blockchain on Sunday December 19, 2021 @03:15PM (#29617879)
It's a growth/marketing tool for new games to leech specific types of people from other games. You can target a very specific demographic of people (say whales, or hardcore grinders) and reward only those people.
Re:An NFT without a blockchain on Sunday December 19, 2021 @03:14PM (#29617870)
You're giving a visceral reaction right now. Being able to flex by buying a jpg for hundreds of thousands and having people on boards like this lose their minds over it is part of the appeal, you're feeding the beast without even realizing it.
Re:An NFT without a blockchain on Sunday December 19, 2021 @03:09PM (#29617808)
1) It's technically easy to integrate due to being able to access any data without needing special API access. Permissionless open system.

2) There's a more collaborative environment with NFTs because project owners are more open to others giving utility to their NFTs as it drives value back to the project itself. It's not a sell something and end customer relationship model.

3) You can target any specific asset and give it any usecase you want - you don't literally need to map 1-1 every single asset.

>Yep, and then they recover them, which isn't possible with a lost private key.

He told you that there are smart wallets now (like with Argent) that allow you to retrieve access to your account just like you would with anything else. And it's possible to lose your password and not recover them unless you've set up the right recovery measures.

Re:Ubisoft’s first NFT plans make no sense on Thursday December 09, 2021 @01:42AM (#29494543)
Why is absolute braindead comments like this still tolerated on here. I mean you'd hope that at some point the people who missed out on one of the biggest investment and technological opportunities of our time would just suck it up and either admit they were wrong or quietly move on with their lives but this place is just filled with angry cope comments like this that seek to vilify participants in a new space without even having a moderate understanding of what they're talking about. Maybe just maybe past all the evil scams and get rich quick schemes out there (which is present in any nascent industry), there are some things and people who are interested in this space and aspects of it that don't amount to eXpLoItaTioN.

And just to actually touch on this specific aspect of artists and being exploited, it's a laughable suggestion to mention this in this context when NFTs are one of the first times in recent history when artists can actually take back control from being exploited and unable to provide for themselves without succumbing to essentially giving up their soul - to unlocking their creative freedom and earning potential like we've never seen before.

Have you really not heard of decentralized exchanges?

"For instance, BTC still hasn't recovered from the latest crash a few months ago" it made new ATHs this week. I mean what do you people want, that it always stays at ATH every single ticking second? Zoom the f out ffs.
Everybody buys BTC at the price they deserve. If you wanna wait 10 years for it to get 'safe' and 'adopted' then you pay for the people who have taken the risk and contributed to its survival and growth.
Why is learning an instrument considered objective better use of your time than scrolling for information/entertainment? That information/entertainment can gain you lots of things that improve your life, some of which can eclipse the acquired skill of making pleasing sounds with some object.
Re:NFT projects are just MLMs for tech elites on Friday October 01, 2021 @11:32AM (#28719772)
Pretty much every profile pic NFT now (hottest form of NFTs right now) comes with some huge list of utility and roadmap behind it (look into BAYC for a good example), if that's the sort of thing you're looking for. Also, "bragging rights" or flexing, it turns out, is a pretty huge part of not only the physical realm but also digital as well if you look at the existing digital skins market.
So one dummy who made like 15eth off a very fringe method AND GOT CAUGHT invalidates a whole new technology / asset class?
Big difference between labeling it a "waste of money" to having to prioritize whilst being constrained to a limited budget. I mean there's no words that will console a parent that lost their daughter anyways, not really a metric that should determine policy.
"They said the action itself is illegal and they're beginning their enforcement actions at Coinbase" - they said no such thing, stop guessing out of your backside to try to strengthen phantom arguments.
They don't know why they're being sued because everyone else is doing it and not getting sued. Makes sense from that point of view. Coinbase technically should only be sued if the others doing were sued too, but they're not... Compound this with the fact that no explanation was given to them why they're being sued - when it is very much necessary in light of their competitors not getting sued and you can start understanding their confusion.
Re:Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge on Wednesday May 19, 2021 @05:27AM (#27206299)
No demand for DeFi? Are you serious? Total value in DeFi has gone from sub $1b to over $70b in the last year.
Re:Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge on Wednesday May 19, 2021 @05:25AM (#27206291)
This notion that bitcoin is great for crimes has been thoroughly debunked in a variety of studies over the last few years. There's more crime committed using the US dollar (on a percentage basis even) than using bitcoin and the Bitcoin network's transparent nature coupled with the advance in on-chain analytics makes this easy to explain.
Re:Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge on Wednesday May 19, 2021 @05:21AM (#27206266)
That's under the presumption of efficient markets where there's perfect information across all market pariticipants which isn't the case currently with DeFi.

Apply that same limitation to stocks, art, any of the millions of homes where the buyer doesn't live in...what is your point?
