Aversion to paying Danegeld, from people who have enough sense to know better.
Bonds. If you don’t think bond prices have any relation to the economy you don’t understand basic economics. Gas prices. If you don’t think a hike in oil is a leading indicator, you don’t understand economics. Debt. If you don’t see the fiscal health of the government, including its debt level as part of the economy then you probably don’t understand macro. The economy has not been well for years. Arguably a decade of zero out interest rates that exploded into sustained inflation that continues intentionally to this day.

Making comparisons to Reddit commentary violates the hn guidelines.

Maybe it’s easier to outsource.
Taxpayers have a right to scrutinize how their tax dollars are getting spent. When the government acts like it doesn’t derive its power from the citizens, people will revolt. It’s what DOGE was all about, the resistance.
Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:14AM (#50288471)
The set of all ip hardware and software is much much larger than just what currently exists, as it includes all hardware and software that is yet to be produced. Said another way, it’s a foolish consistency.
So it’s clearly an industry wide problem then. The more I read the more thankful I am California can’t build high speed rail.
Has there ever been a case where two self driving cars collide with each other? I hate to be part of the peanut gallery, but as a totally naive person when it comes to railway safety research it really does seem amazing train collisions can’t be easily prevented with gps, lasers, sonar or various other trivial ways. Even the crash in question seems like it might have been easily prevented by having a second human in the loop. Maybe I and others just suspect the difficulty isn’t so much technological as it is financial.
Featured article says they are looking into “environmental chemical exposures as a possible culprit”. A rise since 2019 due to “chemical exposure” make food and water pollution, and thus diet, plausible explanations no?
Re:Alleged Israeli spy company targeted Starlink users on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @10:33AM (#50274327)
You do Israel a big disservice honestly. If you are going to defend them, try to do it well. Israel has a PR problem right now, and it’s because discussions are shut down or subverted. Please don’t be a part of that.
Re:Tell HN: I'm going on strike this November on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @09:38AM (#50273348)
It’s always been like this in reality. Managers matter, engineers do not.
So we need abliterated models just so we can test them out and compare them to the original? Sounds like a solution in search of a problem and a problem you believe people have even if people disagree with you about that.
Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Thursday October 22, 2026 @10:42AM (#50196088)
I think we live in an age where programming mistakes should be attributed to llm by default. In the old days, it was just the coder and stack overflow to blame, now its layer on layer of ai assisted work, from ceo level on down. Something we haven’t perfected yet: how to prove 0 ai use in a product. Until we get there, we have to assume llm are everywhere and that their use carries liability risk.
Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Thursday October 22, 2026 @10:29AM (#50195918)
India is a place not a race though. They have an entire caste system built around that fact.
AI isn’t used on the battlefield? War cannot be won against an enemy who uses ai, unless you also use ai. Ai progress/escalation is nuclear escalation, just as ai progress is now the driver of progress in medicine, math, science, law, ….
Re:"I'm on a War Footing": Terry Tao and the Crisis in Math on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @12:10PM (#50168546)
If people were empathetic then they would realize we’re all in this together. Where was the outcry in the academic community when graphic designers got replaced? I’m not experiencing schadenfreud mind you, it’s peculiar to me how narrow the scope of concern many academics have, but I suppose it’s the end result of hyper specialization and credentialiam that has come to “legitimize” the middle and upper class over the past century or so. Still strange to see.
So you are offering your grammar expertise to us, not any meaningful commentary on the law or legal aspects of the document? That’s a helpful distinction to make. I read it to include open weight models produced by the company you cite, and derivative products.
America is doomed.
Bad analogy. There won’t be any managers or salesman left either.

Distinction without a difference. They happen to have jobs that they are passionate about. Many people do.
Nuclear war. Are you serious?
Thanks for a summary. Based on your summary, I think the parent is directionally correct, at least. All of this seems like panic and attempt to salvage a profession, seeking control and money and other people to do stuff, now! It’s not like this is isolated to university labor. It will kill universities yes, but it will kill a lot of bigger and more important things, likely humanity itself will be killed off. That’s the context.
Your contention is that police informants don’t exist or that they have zero impact?
Re:My old job feels distant now on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:07AM (#50131318)
It’s putting tools and buzzwords ahead of actually building and creating. Does it matter more what you create or the editor you use, the language, etc… A lot of that dickwaving seems like it came in the past decade or two.
Re:Super Intelligence on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:14AM (#50130890)
Or cybersecurity.
Having a small group to influence is bad for democracy is what I thought you were saying. That implies having more people to influence is better for democracy. If that’s not what you were saying, I apologize for misconstruing, but I see that mindset soften enough, and to me it seems like a fallacy. You just end up with a run away election industry and high paid propaganda specialists, the normalization of domestic propaganda campaigns, the unraveling of social cohesion as large swaths of the populace become convinced the other half are nazi’s, fascists, communist spies, pedos, Russian assets, etc… every new election a bit more polarizing and traumatizing to the national psyche than the prior. Yay, democracy!
You reported it I would hope? Art theft is a crime against humanity, not to mention the artist. Sort of like saying, “I know this serial killer in LA, he showed me and some other guys his severed head collection, it was wild.” Ymmv
Influence maxxing fixes democracy? As long as we’re flooding everyone with 24/7 political ads and building multibillion dollar industry around the associated digital surveillance, democracy will be safe. Brilliant!
Re:Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet on Thursday October 15, 2026 @09:33AM (#50103475)
By necessity. They sell so many counterfeit items, items sold as new but are used, items sold with misleading pictures or descriptions, various other scams to tolerate if not encourage. They’ve managed to normalize that and to do so they had to make returns frictionless. It’s a failing strategy. People just buy less and less from Amazon, unless they have cognitive issues.
