Re:Linux interop is maturing fast thanks to a games console on Saturday September 30, 2023 @09:46AM (#37715388)
You don't even need SteamOS to use proton. I have played one game on my Windows partition in the last 5 years. Now I assume games will work on my Linux computer until proven differently instead of the other way around.
Re:Menstrual Cups Help Keep Kenyan Girls in School on Tuesday April 23, 2019 @03:51AM (#19726438)
I can't imagine anything being more comfortable than the cup. If inserted correctly I can't feel it at all and the added comfort of no leaks or string like when I use to use tampons.
Re:Monads you can understand (2015) on Sunday March 03, 2019 @10:26AM (#19294853)
I think this is the why monads are hard to understand. It's hard to come up with a general example of why they are useful and anything beyond they significantly simplify a lot of common cases you run into with functional programming quickly get convoluted.

I didn't really understand monads until I ran into really long / repetitive / ugly code when writing Haskell and then reading a book and realizing they could be used to simplify the parts of my code that frustrated me.

I think the biggest reason they are useful is because data and the container around it can be treated independently and gives a good common interface for container behavior.

Re:Things that are more inequitable than road pricing on Monday February 04, 2019 @10:00AM (#19076814)
You make it sound like owning a car in Manhattan is just a matter of choice when it is an extreme luxury and an inconvenient one at that. That's at least $1000 (probably more) on something you definitely won't use every day and definitely don't need.

My SO and I each make 6 figures each and will only own a car once we move out of Manhattan because no matter how inconvenient it is it's not fiscally responsible.
