News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

The things that normal people will want to use AI for (game mods) will be made illegal or a ToS violation until the only thing allowed is to consume veiled advertisements.

Behind closed doors the elite will use the tech for (biological) weapons and reverse engineering though. Military applications, OK but don’t you dare put Sonic in Super Mario.

It’s a shame that this has to be pointed out every time. People really need to engage in critical thinking and risk assessment.
Valve was working on TF2.. but it took years to be completed. It started as a more serious military shooter and became the lovely cartoon version later.
Re:New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore on Monday September 14, 2026 @01:45PM (#49700915)
Isn’t this part of the assumed plan? Seems to me the fee would have never been done without the blessing of big tech.

Trump admin gets a perceived win that they are protecting US jobs and big tech gets to fill the massive campuses they recently built in India and Canada (oh gee what are the odds?) with no option for these employees to get higher wages in the US.

Seems like everyone wins but labor… No more additional US tech jobs (seems like a perma-hiring freeze) and visa employees get routed to cheaper areas which is a massive savings for the companies.

You are wrong. People that remember the cancelled StarCraft Ghost are excited for this.
Re:216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video] on Sunday September 06, 2026 @11:09PM (#49593432)
Only a matter of time before they ship with cell modems so you can’t disconnect them from the internet.

My LG tv post-update is never allowed on a network and it will never be updated again. Hopefully it never breaks…

Even if you look at your purchase history now they have intentionally destroyed that too. What size shoe did you buy 3 years ago? Too bad we are not telling you!

The purchase/shipped/etc email was the lifeline to tracking your Amazon spending and exactly what you bought. Now that is impossible. It's similar to a business refusing to give you a proper receipt and should be likely illegal.

What 3rd party companies I let hoover up my Amazon purchase emails is none of their business.

Nope. People don’t want them because they fear the DC will further increase utility bills. These companies openly talk about eliminating their jobs via AI with glee. Why would anybody help them? They are against the average persons best interests for their profit.

It’s debatable if a DC will affect local energy costs but people don’t want to risk it. Big tech has lost all their social capital. I would say at this point all of corporate America has. They have too much power over the public. People are starting to push back.

Woof, so which one is the “good” one?
I would assume people would switch to using FEX which is tuned for game performance for the x86 emulation bit.
They have to be doing some variant of this in the life cycle because of how wildly the performance changes over time. I refuse to give Anthropic my own money because the subscription plans are essentially useless. It's rather nice with a company API account with no spending limit though. But really oAI models are more consistent over time in my experience.
I often use this quote. One of my favorite of all times. Really cool to see somebody else use it! Every year that passes the more important that quote becomes.
Of course they are. They will boil the frogs slowly until they get the frog soup they so desire. Each time the water gets a little bit too hot (public outrage) they will turn it back down for a bit.

Every major global region has this problem. I would tell you the slope is slippery, but I already fell down and cracked my head open.

Joking aside, this privacy invasion will keep happening until there are laws passed (a foundational constitution perhaps?) that make it impossible to attempt to even create such laws/rules.

100% agree that places close too early for folks that work into the evening.
I didn’t forget this. I worked for pennies in retail longer than I ever did anything else. I see a clear change over the past few decades.
Take an hour off at 2-3pm in any major US city and look at how many people are just milling about. Mostly shopping. There are a lot of people in the US that are not working.

Pre-2008 retail was quiet in the middle of the day, now it booms. I can’t comment on if this is a good or bad thing, but I am surprised at how many people are causally walking their dog as I am rushing to compete an essential errand and get back to work.

This comes off as extremely condescending. I am pretty sure the person you are trying to give basic dieting advice already knows this. Why are you trying so hard to convince people to not take medication that helps them?
Re:No-One Escapes the Permanent Underclass on Friday June 26, 2026 @02:53AM (#48683223)
You assume the tech lords would allow us access to natural resources to do that. Hint: they won’t. They will own everything.
Re:No-One Escapes the Permanent Underclass on Friday June 26, 2026 @02:48AM (#48683199)
I am real jealous of the boomers and gen-x being able to bail on the tech job market right as it goes to shit. Could not make for better timing. Everyone else looking at somehow surviving for the next 20-30 years knows that it’s looking pretty bleak.
Re:Why is Meta destroying its engineering organization? on Tuesday June 16, 2026 @06:23PM (#48563050)
Looks like the Facebook employee got scared. They always keep quiet…
For all the folks that proudly say “fine I will use browser X instead!” Don’t you realize the next step is to slowly change chrome so sites will work in chrome, but not other minority browsers?

Google is playing the long game. Boil the frogs slowly.

> my manager has no idea who I am, nor what I’m working on, and I’ve never met them despite me being on the team for nearly two months.

This is the fast track to being next in a round of layoffs. If your manager does not know you, they won’t vouch for you when it comes time to toss people out of the airlock. You are in a vulnerable position.

It’s because upper management demands it. Do most of your coding with an LLM or find another job, etc. How much you “llm all the things” is now a measured performance metric.

It’s pure madness but employees are obligated to give the people that pay them what they want. Either that or lose your healthcare and housing.

Re:DOS Zone on Wednesday May 20, 2026 @09:13PM (#48216557)
I wish iPadOS properly handled full screen and keyboard input. It runs rather well on my M4 iPad Pro but the lack of proper full screen support in the browser with mouse capture ruins it. Awesome emulator though!
Re:Apple Silicon costs more than OpenRouter on Sunday May 17, 2026 @02:24PM (#48171708)
Even if a Mac mini at home was slightly cheaper per token I still use OpenRouter because I want to out source the heat generation and noise to a datacenter.
This is the best possible take if you ask me. Sundar won because he was not wildly unstable like the other Google Execs were at that time.
Re:Microsoft open sources DOS 1.00 on 45th anniversary on Thursday April 30, 2026 @03:42AM (#47959452)
The world needs 6.22 open sourced.
Re:Resident Evil Requiem with Denuvo DRM Cracked on Friday April 10, 2026 @12:06AM (#47713508)
How much does the frame rate go up by with the crack applied I wonder…
We might all find ourselves become “useless”. If we don’t like it, a drone might come to our door to correct our behavior.

What do we do when most can’t trade their labor for money?

So installing mass surveillance systems without permission of the people being spied on counts as philanthropy now?

We are at a weird place right now in the US.
