Nice find. Agreed. The concrete bunker isolation in this clip is an entirely different vibe that's interesting on its own, doesn't need the horror color grade.

I wish the bbc would rebroadcast or release it in higher quality than the YouTube uploads from over a decade ago. It’s so great, I’d love to _see_ it in high def.

Re:The Death of Personality on Tuesday March 07, 2023 @03:24PM (#35060675)
Curious what you are referring to. I often try to find the optimal calendar app, and while I know Fantastical isn't it for me, I am curious if there is an overarching story/reason why that I'm not aware of.
I have some daguerreotypes from this period that are in worse condition. Must do better underwater than in air...
Re:NeXTSpirit: high-res NeXTSTEP Icons for macOS on Monday December 13, 2021 @02:45PM (#29543584)
Not sure if that's totally true. I've changed a bunch of icons w/o disabling SIP and I'm on the latest OS.
Re:Windows 11 available on October 5 on Tuesday August 31, 2021 @12:08PM (#28369767)
How on earth are microsoft/windows.com images still low resolution. It really stands out and detracts from the visuals they're trying to sell.
Re:An Open Letter to Airbnb The pitchforks are coming on Friday August 27, 2021 @05:21PM (#28333087)
Fair enough. I would extend not generating clicks as an example of my point but I do think I tried to too narrowly explain why things are the way they are without reflecting on other alternatives too much.
Re:An Open Letter to Airbnb The pitchforks are coming on Friday August 27, 2021 @05:20PM (#28333082)
Great point. Agreed. My comment above has too narrow a view.
Re:An Open Letter to Airbnb The pitchforks are coming on Friday August 27, 2021 @04:40PM (#28332742)
Without flogging corporations, the public won't be able to act on their bad behaviors.

Imagine if there were no articles written about Amazon, or Airbnb, and instead there were only article written about exploitation of workers or skirting the hotel laws as bad things that are happening (either in theory or out there in the wild). In that case, the public won't actualize it or internalize it enough to take action with who they vote for, and in turn elected officials won't bother taking action because their constituents don't know/don't care and so it's not important for them either.

Re:Urbit Precepts Discussion on Wednesday December 02, 2020 @04:04PM (#25281609)
An overly complex web service and web app :-)

That's my takeaway from getting it up and running as an end user for a bit.

Re:An upcoming story about Coinbase on Wednesday November 25, 2020 @11:49PM (#25216907)
Disappointed as a customer to see this nyt-is-bad preemptive pr defense and no substance action, as I guess as fits their mission statement, than a critical assessment of flaws etc. and description of improvements they’ll make going forward.
Re:The Strange Disappearance of Cooperation in America (2013) on Friday November 13, 2020 @08:05PM (#25089365)
I think the parent makes a very astute point and this response is handwaving away a huge amount of undeniable social change that is being dismissed.
What's the death rate right now? How many people have died over the norm?
Re:A U.S. Election Twitter Network Graph Tool on Tuesday October 27, 2020 @01:56PM (#24910005)
It's been almost a decade from when I remember first clicking through an account exactly like this.

Twitter has shown they absolutely care not for the discourse.

Long term, platforms that do well on this front will overtake FB/Tw, because real users don't want this garbage.

Re:Halide Mark II on Thursday October 22, 2020 @08:54PM (#24865030)
While I disagree with the opinion of the application, and think the response to the gating/requirements for use is unfair, there is good feedback for the developers of Halide, and app developers in general to chew on in this comment.

For an app that wants to save photos for the user, how do you do this permissions gating without irritating the cursory view by skeptical user?

For an app that wants to make sure you don't lose any metadata/exif (including location) how can you do that without raising eyebrows for location permissions.

How can you communicate the value prop to convert a subscription? I think the app does a great job for existing users in providing a 1yr automatic subscription (would have thought parent comment would get this) but I also am confused, and will be confused, when that time is up I think.

--

Halide is a incredible application. One of my favorites. I don't use it as much as I could benefit from it because of the problem of it not having the same immediate access as the native camera app does, but also it does not include Live Photo capture which for me and moments with friends and family is essential. That said, it's the best built app I have on my phone, the best design, provides path to incredible photography results, and I will continue to pay for it.

> Is that good user interface design, or is it more of a dark pattern? Do you like when apps do this?

No it's not good user interface design, not only because it's annoying af, it doesn't achieve the goals it sets out to do.

Re:To Eleventy and Beyond on Thursday October 22, 2020 @08:36PM (#24864931)
Eleventy is really terrific.

I am able to build out my site either by leveraging a number of 'smart ways' to do it that all static site generators do ... templates, markdown to html... but I can also be lazy and custom write html/style per page, per directory, to get some art-directed type page out fast.

I feel like there was a tiny learning curve with the docs to get from 0 to 10 ... but from 10 to whatever is really great fun.

Re:iSH Shell on Thursday October 22, 2020 @03:49PM (#24862574)
It is likely the only way to stay active as much as possible in the background so the process doesn't get killed.
As with all kinds of vote manipulation/fraud, how do those who execute these tasks rationalize their actions and sleep at night.
I find this really sad. Knowing a lot of people who work in the US who aren't citizens and have more and more been stressed about their access to return home and back for a variety of reasons, this just adds to a pile of depressing realities people in America are facing.
Re:Microsoft Fast Design on Friday August 07, 2020 @07:17PM (#24087404)
I could have bet there was a low quality / compressed image on this when I saw Microsoft. Low and behold the site logo is low res.

Why is that at MS... Switching to teams everyone’s face turned to mush which while it might save on aggregate network traffic, it greatly reduces the niceness of the conversation.

Re:Who’s behind Wednesday’s epic Twitter hack? on Thursday July 16, 2020 @06:59PM (#23864842)
Yep, good point. But if someone stole this amount in cash through a hack or social engineering, I think that would be even more notable :)
Re:Who’s behind Wednesday’s epic Twitter hack? on Thursday July 16, 2020 @06:45PM (#23864730)
Bitcoin is sort of notable vs US-dollar in that it’s significantly more of a novelty, and unlike the dollar, doesn’t have same fraud recovery path.
Re:Merge tag 'inclusive-terminology' into Linux kernel on Sunday July 12, 2020 @10:24AM (#23811504)
Really surprised to see a comment pool that is completely negative.

Wouldn’t primary/replica and allowlist/denylist be more explicit anyway?

Society doesn’t have to just do one thing. And because whatever momentum is causing this to happen now, doesn’t negate other reasons why it should happen regardless, and shouldn’t be a reason for it not to either.

There isn't anything that gets me so flustered throughout the day than this.

I would turn these banners off, but as far as I can tell, there is no way to get badges to show up on the icon (only other cue to remind me people want to talk to me) without these banners.

I really wish there was a 3rd party client that was all native that I could use. Teams is definitely the worst part of my software stack.

Nothing beats a plastic Adirondack though, comfort and durability!
The article discusses how it’s different, including how the director and screenwriter felt about it. (quite negatively)
Re:Life is 90% of my use cases for org-mode on Sunday June 28, 2020 @10:12PM (#23673745)
Legible might be a better word? The giant, viewport spanning, line-width mixed with dense line-height makes it harder on eye for some people, myself included.
