Re:Artificial Analysis v5 and the benchmarker's dilemma on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:36AM (#50303062)
Asking the right questions.
I'm not sure if you live in the UK? The country uses a huge amount of LNG for electricity and heavy industry.

If suddenly there's not enough LNG to go around, there will likely be rolling blackouts. So much more of an issue than no heat.

Same here.

I mean, it was the flagship starship of the fleet. So yeah, it better be staffed with competent people like that.
Gemini 2.5 flash was amazing via the API for a lot of use cases. Great blend of fast, accurate, and cheap.
I wonder how much medium- to long-term storage has been installed this year. Batteries are fantastic, but we need better ways to store excess wind and solar for dark winter days when there's no sun or wind.
Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:07PM (#50276896)
I'm not a big fan of their trend of talking about a new model and not releasing it for a while.
I feel like there is a big misunderstanding here. In my house, we've been doing a lot of light "prepping" lately. Not for the apocalypse, but for simple emergency situations for a few days to a week.

The UK government has been pushing hard for the public to stock enough food and water for at least 3 days. We have weeks of supplies.

My huge worry is that the country will run out of LNG due to the ongoing war in Iran, Qatar being offline, and Europe not having enough LNG in storage. Plus, a lot of weird weather due to El Niño.

Is an emergency LLM really going to make a difference? Probably not, but I have one on my desktop computer anyways.

Re:New iMac with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @01:50PM (#50263030)
I recently upgraded to Golden Gate, and that helped a bit, but it still feels sluggish.
Re:New iMac with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:53AM (#50260307)
Interesting. I have the same machine w/ same specs. I find it sluggish. I think it depends on what you're doing.
My hot take is that we're headed to an economic freefall and/or depression. They're trying to get ahead of it.
Re:Did it just build.. a clock? on Monday October 26, 2026 @02:03PM (#50248167)
I didn't make this. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Re:Did it just build.. a clock? on Sunday October 25, 2026 @10:49AM (#50232137)
Weird, I just stumbled upon this one yesterday: https://clockfaces.com
Interesting. Personally, I hate YT shorts.

I only watch YouTube, but I grew tired of the algorithm and wanted traditional TV, but for YT. So created this: https://channelsurfer.tv

I keep shorts out.

Re:Railway Security Disclosure on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @07:33PM (#50189118)
It already _is_ a rough decade. I have hated the 20s so damn much.
Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @07:37AM (#50179206)
Utter nonsense. This is not realism. This is your weird negative way of looking at the world.

A lot of European countries are now generating most of their electricity from renewables, and it's being built out rapidly. We can now produce grid-scale storage at lower and cheaper prices. In places like Texas, this is happening at a breakneck speed.

Otherwise known as anacyclosis. It's a cycle.
Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:21PM (#50096983)
Yup, I tell my partner all the time. I just want the new era to be here already. I hate this waiting. I'm very annoyingly optimistic and think we're headed for post-scarcity.
Re:Linus Torvalds's first LLM-assisted patch series on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @02:41PM (#50092805)
I, too, have this question for the anti-AI people.

What is the game plan? Use an OS version older than 2023? Stop using tech?

Re:Lobbying is corruption on Saturday October 10, 2026 @10:55AM (#50033590)
We changed the laws that enabled lobbying back in ~1970.

There's a fairly simple solution to this:

I strongly agree. Plus, personally, I wouldn't put a box online. I have a desktop at home that I keep off the internet. I only connect to it via ZeroTier.
Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:42PM (#50008118)
They'll just hire them from abroad and have them work remotely as contractors...
Re:Mike Tomlin spent 12 years building a Minecraft city on Friday October 02, 2026 @06:38PM (#49939478)
This is... kind of insane. I'm not someone who is easily surprised by things but this one is so random, weird, and happily surprising.
Re:Supabase Is Acquiring Turso on Friday October 02, 2026 @12:14PM (#49935212)
UGH as a turso customer, I do not want this.
Re:AI Makes Me Sad on Friday October 02, 2026 @11:51AM (#49934905)
I feel the same way. I was trying out the new ChatGPT voice the other day and had this exact same thought. AI _still_ is blowing my mind often, even though it's been around for years.
Re:To Grieve, or Not to Grieve? on Friday October 02, 2026 @05:34AM (#49931593)
I fear this is playing out now.
This has absolutely been a dream of mine. We act like it's the 80s-90s again and optimize all the software.
Re:Dots: Always-on agents on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @04:55PM (#49900377)
I don't know... a HUGE amount of people love to game on their PCs.
Re:PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock on Saturday September 26, 2026 @03:17PM (#49859634)
Shameless promotion here but I think https://channelsurfer.tv is a good experience.
Re:Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video] on Friday September 25, 2026 @08:56AM (#49843989)
Sensible take and it's one I share.
