Re:The Megadonors Who Have Poured $1.2B into the Midterms on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:28AM (#50333726)
There are many, for example

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2026/10/28/tax-wealth...

The key thing here is to look at the trend over time, esp the last few years. There has been a steady rise in support for a wealth tax since the GFC, with a sharp rise in recent years.

I assume the /s was implied?

Re:The Megadonors Who Have Poured $1.2B into the Midterms on Monday November 02, 2026 @12:46AM (#50333516)
Fairly unlikely. Quite a few people in the US(60%) are in favour of a wealth tax.

For better or for worse, the narrative in the US is slowly shifting to class differences rather than the usual culture war dog whistle issues. No matter how much the ultra wealthy wring their hands and try to explain their plight, the people are less and less inclined to be sympathetic when they are seeing the full effects of the K shaped recovery we've been in since the GFC.

> They would be horrified by how our government today

100%, just not in the direction you think. They would be apalled at Trump's blatant, in your face corruption all while the MAGA base cheers him on.

So, per your interpretation, the president can just ignore any law created by Congress by simply allocating zero funds to any agency carrying out the law?

USAID was created by Congress when it formally codified USAID into statute through the Foreign Affairs Reform and Restructuring Act in 1998.

So, how is the president allowed to simply ignore a law passed by Congress?

One can hope. The tide seems to be turning with Trump becoming toxic to a majority of voters.

If the GOP loses big in the midterms, we might finally see MAGA and the GOP turn on each other in an internecine frenzy.

Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:14AM (#50255603)
Well, I can offer you some hope. Both Bolsanaro and Lula have promised to reform the supreme court. Lula might have won personally, but he lost big in the parliament and will find it much harder to govern without compromise.

There is some chatter that, should he fail to deliver on the promised reforms, impeachment is on the cards. So, you might get what you have hoped for, supreme court reforms, without the toxic authoritarianism and corruption of the Bolsanaro family.

Dude...who hurt you?

You 'substantiated' by making further unhinged claims without a single reference or citation.

Someone else said it far better than me here last year, so I'll just leave it at that

Really? Here is a comment you made very recently https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50228883

If you did a poll based on statements like these, 100% of people will tell you that you need serious help.

Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:02AM (#50240110)
> I'm kinda trying to move past left/right labels.

And yet, somehow 100% of your posts are repeating debunked Brazilian right wing propaganda. How curious.

Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:01AM (#50240092)
> It's the only place where I feel safe enough to discuss Brazilian politics

And so, you feel comfortable foisting your political views on a tech forum, even when you are repeatedly told that your views are unhinged and that you need serious help?

Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:52AM (#50239637)
And of course, like always you will present no proof other than 'everyone knows'
Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:49AM (#50239620)
The point is, you really need to sit down, examine your life and get help. You have spent years repeating and amplifying debunked Brazilian right wing propaganda here. You refuse to see and accept evidence when it's presented to you and turn round and accuse others of bias.

At some point, you cross over from being misguided to an embarrassment to yourself.

Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:44AM (#50239593)
And how many of those 'independent' judges were appointed by Bolsanaro after openly and explicitly promising to 'end' Lula?
Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:42AM (#50239579)
Really? Didn't the Bolsanaro campaign also request an extension of the voting deadline due to water logging and transportation problems in parts of the country?
Given all the egregious things Trump has said on national TV and had the MAGA folks contort themselves into knots trying to explain and justify what he said, It's hardly the political death sentence that it used to be.
Re:Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner's phone on Friday October 23, 2026 @01:15PM (#50212322)
I'm surprised we haven't seen the 'If you got nothing to hide, then what's the problem with surveillance' crowd descend on this thread. I love it when the plutocrats in power get a taste(however fleeting) of what they routinely subject us plebs to.
It's bots who trigger the initial flagging, but HN mods can choose to overturn the flagging. For obvious reasons (look at the ownership and management of Ycombinator), this is seldom done for posts like these.
Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Friday October 23, 2026 @12:33AM (#50204547)
I said _crony_ capitalism is the dominant business engine in the country.

The govt mandated services are owned by private capital(hence the capitalism part) and govt picks winners by granting licenses to a select few(hence the crony prefix)

Re:eMudhra to Exit Global SSL/TLS Certificate Business on Thursday October 22, 2026 @01:43PM (#50198663)
This is pretty normal in India unfortunately. Crony capitalism is the dominant business engine in the country, so pretty much any significant business, esp in regulated sectors like govt mandated services(which is the bulk of eMudhra's operations) is impossible to set up without significant bribes being paid.

As a consequence, these businesses are very well protected from normal market forces and are pretty much above the law. Had this incident not been an international one, they had a very good chance of getting away with it, and the people reporting this would have landed in jail.

> If you want to solve the budget deficit you need to go after the things that matter which is mandatory social spending these days

If we're talking about cutting waste, why not first cut the military budget which is larger than the next ten countries combined? The same military which can't stop a country whose GDP is smaller than it's budget?

But no, according to Republicans, the problem begins when you spend on people rather than showering money on corporations and billionaires.

The Iran war will go down in history as one of the biggest unforced errors in US history. To think that Iran was ready to agree to pretty much everything Trump wanted before the war, and he still chose to enter into a needless war.

Of course he campaigned on ending 'forever wars', but to his base, this is all part of some masterful 4D chess move.

WTF!! When did we land in the middle of a Black Mirror episode?

I'm half convinced the first run of the LHC split the timeline and we've landed in the evil one.

Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @05:50PM (#50012871)
Given Trump's attention span and track record, it's very likely this is squarely aimed at optics before the mid terms. I'd be willing to offer good odds that this gets quietly rolled back post midterm for companies willing to bribe the administration..... er become patriots via a donation to "America First fund.
If the remaining deficit is around a trillion dollars, and we spend more than that on needless wars in the middle east, it's easy to see what to cut to balance the budget....

> Are you proposing to institute a wealth tax?

Ideally, but failing that raise the estate tax to 90% for estates over the current exemption limit of $15 million and eliminate all trust loopholes.

The billionaires would be able to enjoy their money in their lifetimes and still ensure that their children are taken care of in their lifetimes all while paying their fair share to society upon death.

Defense might not be a cure all for the deficit, but reducing expenses to the tune of 12% sure is a heck of a start. Clearly defense spending isn't buying us that much if the our armed forces can't deal with a middle income country (Hormuz blockage) and a group of rebels (Bab al Mandeb blockage).

Cutting defense doesn't even need to be complicated. Just stop forever wars in the middle east. It won't hurt our actual defense capabilities and will raise America's stature in the world. Heck, we have the best defense imaginable given to us for free (the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans), to the extent that two world wars combined didn't see a major attack on the US mainland.

Cutting (or better still privatizing) social security, medicare and medicaid, while being the Republican wet dream, actually translates to direct harm to millions of citizens.
