Re:Blue Prince Is a Roguelike Puzzle Masterpiece on Friday April 11, 2025 @04:57PM (#43658472)
I've played for about an hour and agree with your assessment. I still have it installed but I doubt I will revisit it.

I've switched to South of Midnight and it's amazing. Not everyone's type of game - and certainly not a puzzle game - but the graphics, music, story, and gameplay combine to make it one of the best games I've played in a long, long time.

Same with This Charming Man by The Smiths and Mary Jane's Last Dance by Tom Petty
Re:The Fishy Death of Red Lobster on Thursday May 02, 2024 @01:32PM (#40238961)
At some point in my lifetime, the mindset switched from "I'm investing because I want to see long-term, steady growth and get regular dividends" to "I want to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible and damn the consequences to others".

The short-sightedness and greed is destroying so much.

I had a feeling this was going to be Kensington before I even clicked the link.
Re:Coding as a greybeard on Tuesday August 02, 2022 @10:20AM (#32318791)
It feels like ageism is more pronounced at startups and tech companies - at least, that is my perception based on real world and online discussions.

I'm 50, work at a large, established manufacturing/distribution company and haven't experienced any ageism that I know of. I also work with a lot of engineers from external vendors and don't see a lot of people much younger than me (except as junior roles at contractors).

I was planning to start using YTTV when sports start up again. We were using Hulu Live before and, while it wasn't terrible, I wanted to give YTTV a try.

This price hike kills that option. I will go back to Hulu or, more likely, just add TV to my monthly Fios package.

Not true - I replace my Android phones every 4-5 years.
There is no "in-game" gambling in Fortnite. You always know what you are spending your money on:

https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/26/fortnite-pve-eliminates-...

Fortnite doesn't have lootboxes. The Save The World mode did but they recently removed them so you always know what you are buying if you decide to spend money.

I'd say it's not pay-to-win either because most of the skins people buy in the shop are more flashy and easier to spot than the dreaded default skins.

I think this is less about Fortnite and more about people finding another way others are different and using it as a lever to make themselves feel better about their own insecurities.

Re:Epic Games Is Acquiring Psyonix on Wednesday May 01, 2019 @09:24PM (#19803637)
I don't understand why people are lamenting the lack of features on the Epic game store.

I don't need forums or screen shot galleries or any of that junk from my store. I just want games.

If I want to talk about a game or interact with other people who play the same game, I'll go on reddit.

Re:Amazon Pulls Out of Planned New York City Campus on Thursday February 14, 2019 @02:01PM (#19164767)
Well, the NY football teams play in a New Jersey swamp so that didn't really work out for NYC either.
Re:Flattr 2.0 launches to the public on Thursday October 26, 2017 @10:28AM (#15559083)
It sounds like a pyramid scheme to try and monetize an echo chamber.

Yep. I actually went as far as googling the Wall-E humans to see how close it was.

Not if one considers the rights of the unborn.
Re:Do engineers really make better spouses? on Tuesday April 14, 2015 @09:40AM (#9374109)
If that was the main factor, the divorce rate for law enforcement would likely be lower as well.
Re:Dead Man's Snitch – Monitoring for Scheduled Tasks on Monday April 07, 2014 @11:59AM (#7547257)
Hudson/Jenkins works well for us. We've moved all our scheduling jobs out of cron and other uglier options (like maestro) into Hudson.

In addition to sending emails when things break, it can also post to our Twitter feed and send SMS alerts.

Re:Gnome's Web Browser Ditches Google For DuckDuckGo on Thursday August 29, 2013 @06:32PM (#6299042)
I remember the days when Netscape Navigator had all the market share.

Get off my lawn. :)

I agree that choosing an expensive lifestyle is a consumption choice. I was just trying to make the point that it's difficult for a government to determine what basic income is "enough to live comfortably on".

Those kinds of decisions alienate voters and, as a result, are desperately avoided by congress critters.

Unlikely. I know of a lot of people who live in New Jersey but register their auto in another state under a relative's address for cheaper insurance. I also know people who use an old address or the address of an acquaintance/relative so their child can attend a different school district.
Wouldn't the basic income value need to vary across regions? For example, the notion that:

"Every single adult member receives a weekly payment from the state, which is enough to live comfortably on"

would mean a different value in San Francisco than in Grover, NC.

If the government adjusted the basic income to account for regional cost-of-living, I imagine it would be popular to maintain a fake residency in an expensive area while actually living somewhere cheaper.

If the basic income wasn't adjusted for different areas, you would probably see some areas become rich elite enclaves while other areas become basic income ghettos.

The zipper pull tab looks like a Fox logo - like from Fox Motorsports.
Re:Why I'm switching back to Firefox on Monday March 11, 2013 @11:53AM (#5357479)
I use Ubuntu for both work and home use. Chrome is the only browser I use and I never have any problems with it.

I don't use sites like gmail or google docs, though, so maybe it has more to do with the sites visited than the OS platform.

Studies like this can be valuable and useful. However, we need to be careful to use the scientific method in interpreting results and remember that correlation does not imply causation.

My main concern around studies like this is that the media outlets (and many people in society) don't apply scientific method and want to draw conclusions from such studies regardless of cause-effect scenarios.

Re:What was the matter with PDF? on Thursday January 03, 2013 @11:25AM (#5003051)
Is this a Kindle-specific problem? I actually just bought the same book in epub format for my Nook Color and I don't have any complaints yet.

Not sure if I have a higher tolerance for bad formatting or if the Kindle version has some formatting issues.

Re:Tor exit node operator raided in Austria on Thursday November 29, 2012 @03:37PM (#4850107)
If this guy isn't held responsible for the content, you would be creating a loophole in the law.

If I wanted to distribute illegal content safely, I could just run a Tor exit node and claim that the illegal content originated from somewhere within Tor instead of from my machines.

Re:Ninja IDE: written in Python for Pythonists on Tuesday November 27, 2012 @02:22PM (#4838334)
Perhaps because not everyone is doing development on KDE?

The Ninja-IDE supports linux, windows, and osx so it has broader appeal.

Re:Being a polyglot programmer on Tuesday November 06, 2012 @10:43AM (#4748859)
I agree that you only really need to know several types of languages to (a) prove you can learn what you need and (b) get exposed to different philosophies of problem solving. An OO language, a dynamic scripting language, a functional language, and a procedural language are likely enough.

I think it's also very important to have some exposure to the full stack. I interview too many programmers who don't understand what is really happening inside the computer when programs are running or who don't have enough knowledge about networking, security, or operating systems to tune and troubleshoot issues.

Being well-rounded is important and learning various programming paradigms is only a part of that.
