I don't get it. Everyone seems to be either upset at the researchers for their test or defending them.
Why is no one upset at car companies putting tech in our cars that allows for remote shutdown of said car. Is this what we bailed them out for?

Blame the messenger hey?. How about calling the cops on the company that actually put that crap tech in your car instead?
To the OP: You don't have to scare me twice. I'm sporting pre 9/11 PC-hardware and now I'll be driving a pre 9/11 car.
If you tell me that someone can remote control my underwear then maybe I'll have to draw the line there because I'm not buying pre 9/11 undies dammit....not yet anyway.

BS i.m.o. It is more like advertisements and marketing. Your work and your ideas don't have to be good as long as they are remembered. The louder you are, the more space you take, the more you let people know of your ideas and your work, the more money you get. If you quietly just do your job without any fuss you get forgotten. Women seem to have very little room for middle ground in today's corporate world either they get forgotten or they develop the worst case of testicular braggadocio you ever seen and end up being managers and CEOs.

I had a somewhat similar experience. I was doing good work at a place for about a year and got nothing not even a pat on the back. Next year started to get fed up, had a rough patch in my personal life, started getting short, angry and bitchy with people. Ran into technical difficulties on the project I was working on. My idea for solving it weren't listened to and even worse had people listened it would have been a small disaster because my idea was crap. I started staying home either "working" or just plain calling in sick. When I showed up for work people were walking on eggshells around me. So I was an unproductive douche basically. That year I got the biggest raise I've ever had. Don't know why. About two weeks after that I quit.

I'm as leftist as they come and I'm against central planning.
Bitcoin, removing gatekeepers, technologies that reduce/remove barriers to entry like 3d-printers, secure free-flowing information networks look much more promising for a future with empowered humans, free from debt and corporate/government overlords. Artificial scarcity, planned obsolescence and utter waste of resources both human and planetary could be solved if you combined tech like self-building machines, advanced recycling and permaculture principals.

I like this a lot. Kickstarter for scientists.
It would be very welcome if scientists didn't have to come up with military applications of their research in order to get funding.

Global companies can go screw themselves, Google in particular. "People should be able to share information globally." is the motto everyone including global companies should rally behind. The crypto export ban is an apt analogy and it did hinder American companies and benefited everyone else. A good thing too when the NSA started monkeying around with crypto primitives and national security letters. Anything that slows down american tech behemoths and gives room for other european alternatives is a good thing.
