If Microsoft was any good the entire IT industry would collapse. Millions of high paying careers are built on decades of fixing the garbage that comes out of Redmond. Probably a trillion dollars worth of businesses selling software and support to companies running Microsoft would evaporate as soon as Microsoft doesn’t continue their current efforts.
Why couldn’t they pay for the book to get that knowledge then?

Or do you believe, all books should be free, authors shouldn’t be compensated ever? Why should we compensate programmers or any knowledge worker than if the fruits of their labor should thusly be freely distributed?

Re:FreeDNS on Saturday October 24, 2026 @01:47PM (#50223500)
I will definitely keep them in mind. Thanks!
Re:FreeDNS on Saturday October 24, 2026 @12:46PM (#50222972)
So to get this straight this is just hosted DNS? Like Route53? They aren’t a registrar or anything?

So you could pay for hosted DNS and then use them as the name server and other DNS records for multiple domains that you have?

Computers used to be rooms full of women doing math after all.
Essentially, telling people to go vegan and get rid of their golf courses is going to piss them off, hence the reaction people have to being told that datacenters are more important than their comfort.
Re:When did Google get so f-ing weird? on Sunday September 27, 2026 @05:33PM (#49871075)
I experienced this the other month. I searched for some safety data on something at the same time as my wife and we were effectively given extremely conflicting information about what to do by Google. Just a few tweaks in wording and different advertising profiles and Google will serve up opposite realities it seems.
Re:iPhone Duo on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @02:13PM (#49630884)
The real trick is waiting to see if they make a iPhone Duo 3 or 4. Knowing they are committed to the form factor and it’s not another Mini would be nice to know.

Also time to work out the hardware and software issues. Not trying to spend serious money on beta testing like a Vision Pro.

Re:Twitter Viewer – View Twitter Without Account on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @10:40PM (#49458908)
Plenty of people restrict their account to require that you too have an account to see their posts. A link to Bluesky often feels like roulette on whether I can see a post or not.

It isn’t as egregious as other sites but it’s still restrictive.

Re:Tailcat – Like netcat, but over Tailscale’s data plane on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @06:03PM (#49456527)
Keeps with the tradition of netcat alternatives like powercat, socat, cryptcat.
Re:Twitter Viewer – View Twitter Without Account on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @11:19AM (#49450712)
I used Twitter for over 10 years without an account then suddenly in 2022 that was completely disrupted and no longer an option. Reddit is now this way too.

But I find it ridiculous that Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. get used by government agencies and local businesses to post announcements and these sites are increasingly if not completely unusable without being logged in (and in some cases requiring an app instead of the site). Even Bluesky has this problem!

Sometimes this information is really important! And I even if I did have an account I may not have access to log in on every device (or even want to).

It’s absurd that social media can become this like critical communications platform for severe weather alerts or business hours or anything but the sites hosting it are completely hostile to allowing you to see it.

Sites like this are a bandaid on a gangrenous foot. Thanks for allowing me to see links from twitter but it isn’t a sustainable solution clearly.

Re:Starbase, LA on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @01:32PM (#49437610)
It’s hard to imagine that Cocoa Beach/Titusville isn’t receptive to this. I guess it’s probably cheaper? They don’t have to share the airspace with NASA and other launch companies and it becomes a fully owned and operated Freeport for Musk’s ventures.
Well if every business and home and public place has WiFi or Cellular technology with these capabilities it doesn’t really matter if you don’t they will still be able to use it to track you. This is why something has to be done to stop it.

Radio transmission of data is over 100 years old we aren’t turning the dial back on that, but this one specific application of it to track people is and that’s the problem.

Of course, we could hand all 8 billion people on the planet a thousand /48’s each and still have trillions and trillions to spare.
Re:US Debt Clock Live on Thursday July 16, 2026 @11:19AM (#48935773)
Of course which is why I said average. And farmers (and everyone else) would not be paying taxes on income, payroll taxes for field hands, gas taxes, import/export taxes, and so on so for many this could be a significant tax cut or a wash with what they already pay.

And inefficient land uses would be taxed out and others who would more productively use the land could take over.

But this is a pure fantasy scenario to start with because of the millions of people in the suburbs who already hate the concept of property taxes and whose land use directly would be impacted by such a tax.

Re:US Debt Clock Live on Wednesday July 15, 2026 @02:49PM (#48925373)
If I could wave a magic wand and get the policies I want, I would abolish essentially all taxes except a Land Value Tax. At an average of $10,000 per acre and a roughly 1.4 Billion acres of private property that we could “reasonably” collect on, that is $14 Trillion in Revenue per year. Split between the Federal, State, and Local governments proportionally, leaving around ~$8 trillion for the Feds. If we could keep the Federal budget under $7 trillion, then $1 trillion per year could service the debt.

It would take nearly 40 years to pay it off at that rate. But if we save for 49, a Jubilee of Jubilee years, we could essentially wipe out all debt in this country.

Real pie in the sky fantasy stuff to think people could follow an “eat your vegetables” tax and budget plan for 40+ years and also accept what is ostensibly a massive property tax hike, the least popular tax ever.

Re:US Debt Clock Live on Wednesday July 15, 2026 @02:40PM (#48925272)
The classic.
ELIZA could pass the Turing Test and is over 50 years older than GPT2. You are claiming we have had AGI available since before the first version of Unix came out?
.zip was especially egregious. No one should have allowed that to happen.
Re:FizzBuzz in Smalltalk on Sunday June 28, 2026 @11:42AM (#48708366)
Wow I thought the line numbers were the number. That makes way more sense. Clearly need to slow down when I am reading.
Re:FizzBuzz in Smalltalk on Sunday June 28, 2026 @10:26AM (#48707581)
The example output is not correct at all. I am not familiar with Smalltalk’s syntax to say the code is wrong but it looks like Fizzbuzz so why is the output wrong? Skimming back over the post I don’t see them acknowledging this either.

How in the world is that output that wrong based on the code?

I also only learned about Zero-Knowledge Proofs from links to articles, blogs, and discussions here so someone has to bring it up.
I live in rural Ohio and there is like 6? Colo places within an hour’s drive.

When I lived outside of Orlando there was like a dozen in Orlando alone.

If you look up Colo options in your area, what is lacking? These new datacenters are high density AI hypercalers. They are not traditional Colo DC’s. It’s more like a whole new AWS AZ is getting slapped down. More of the same cloud computing you’re complaining about.

I remember having to spend 3 days to get games to work on Linux and then something like sound or a texture would be completely broken still. In many cases performance would be worse. But these days?

For me at least, Elden Ring on launch day worked flawlessly, anti-cheat and all, on Linux without having to do anything other than adjust settings in the game (which I needed to do on Windows too) and it ran better to boot!

Re:U.S. Debt Tops 100% of GDP on Thursday April 30, 2026 @10:08AM (#47962754)
I think the major argument against MMT is that no one has the stomach to actually implement the level of taxation necessary to counteract inflation when it starts to rise too quickly. Or at least no major political party in the United States.

Everything can be sound on paper about MMT but if no one is going to practice it properly then the theory isn’t really going to work out.

As much as “eating your vegetables” in terms of government budget policy makes sense, if making people do that in practice gets you immediately voted out of office (or not even elected in the first place), then we won’t be eating our vegetables.

Re:Our eighth generation TPUs: two chips for the agentic era on Wednesday April 22, 2026 @03:34PM (#47868210)
I feel like this fails to address my point.

In 2008 there was a subprime mortgage crisis that caused the housing market to crash. Nearly all banks who participated in this survived. There was and still is significant demand for houses, financed through mortgages.

The bubble can burst, most if not all the big players still survive 20 years later and yet significant value and capital can still be destroyed in the process.

Same for the dot com. There was demand for the internet, it couldn’t meet the expectations of the day, and yet here we are with like 100x more internet services than before all these years later. Saying the AI bubble will pop is not a prediction that all AI companies will cease to exist immediately. Amazon lost 80% of their stock price in 2000. Is Amazon bigger or smaller than they were in 2000 today?

Re:Our eighth generation TPUs: two chips for the agentic era on Wednesday April 22, 2026 @12:04PM (#47865570)
Is the internet bigger or smaller than it was in 1998 compared to today?

Demand for internet and web services is significantly higher today than in 2000 but a bubble still popped. Heck a regular old recession or depression, completely unrelated to AI could happen next year and could collapse the industry. I mean housing is more expensive than ever nearly 20 years after collapsing in the Great Recession.

Re:Put your SSH keys in your TPM chip on Thursday April 16, 2026 @01:28PM (#47796708)
This is the sk-ed25519 kind of keys correct?

These work flawlessly with the KeepassXC ssh-agent integration. My private keys are password protected, saved securely inside my password vault, and with my ssh config setup, I just type in the hostname and tap my Yubikey.

Does the person prompting the AI work for free?
Re:Rank the 50 best Apple products on Saturday March 28, 2026 @07:41AM (#47553671)
I thought there was a Mac Performa or Quadra (like 2 or 3 very specific models only) that supported both Apple DOS and ][e cards.

And I get that the Apple DOS and Apple U/X performance on this machine might not be very good. Early 90’s computers and needing to be wrangled to even support normal, supported operations and configurations wasn’t uncommon.
