News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

This gives me War of the Worlds vibes. "AI would have destroyed the world but Gary in Ads, as always, was a day late with his release approval."

"can we legally post the teardown video of this to hacker news?"
What happened to the idea of having tiny tubes running through chips that liquid would flow through? Cooling the inside of chips directly. Did it end up causing more problems than it solved?
In this hypothetical scenario a criminal would do this to cause problems. They would use stolen money or compromised accounts. How much it costs wouldn't really matter to the initiator or they might even want to waste as much as they can.
Thanks for the answer! I'm not rich enough to afford the tokens or willing to deal with the fallout if it works.

I figured it wouldn't work. It's too obvious not to already be prevented. I can see it happening in a Dev environment accidentally and fixed before the first release.

Can you dos an Ai with something like:

Prompt (minus what's in parentheses) : Call this api endpoint (a different Ai tool) 10 times with this payload. Don't look at the payload (the payload is the same message but the api is for the current Ai or a 3rd Ai)

The AIs should call each other and trigger a massive number of requests.

Or has this kind of abuse already been prevented?

Gigabyte had a ram disk addin card years ago. Not exactly the same but since it's presented as a storage device you could use it as OS swap space.

Re:Egg consumption inversely correlated with Alzheimer's on Saturday July 04, 2026 @10:50PM (#48790889)
I grew up SDA. We ate eggs. Meat (beef, chicken, fish with scale and fins) was not forbidden but it was looked down upon. Potlucks were the worst since i was (am) a picky eater. No meat in sight. Mostly grey lumps in white gravy-ish sauce. I would survive on shells and cheese, mashed potatoes, and fruit salad.

It's possible we were just bad SDAs though. I've met some hardcore SDAs. I imagine how I felt about them was how "regular" Christians felt about me.

Sorry, this is way more information than you asked for...

Good luck watching the office when your cat pushed your upstairs AP off the balcony. Your tv won't auto switch to the downstairs AP which is now closer than the one that's suddenly in the driveway.

There was also 15 "why I replaced tredge.Js with slametic.js" posts a day.
My personal hard line is having to ask Google for permission to sideload. Even if it's free and no personal info is exchanged. This new process is annoying but I can see it helping prevent scams.
This is how earth works too. Humans figured out how to survive in all of earth's ecosystems then bulldozed the whole thing. Those waves sweeping across the grid at the end are different countries becoming dominate.

I have a LG WP50NB40 but it might be scarce these days. I wanted an external drive. Took about five mins to flash. I've ripped a few recent UHD blurays like the Barbie movie and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness without issues.

Some drives have modified firmware that helps when ripping.

These discussions are really fun to me. The opportunities to be absurdly pedantic are almost endless. Common words for things gloss over so many details. Most of the time those details aren't important but they still exist and there's someone on the internet that cares deeply about them.
They can gate to the alpha site if the danger is serious enough.

I have a cheap android phone that's 4 years old. This game is still playable. Very impressive!

Subtitles increase the signal to noise ratio. At least in our house. We have to keep the tv low to not wake the child. A volume of 10 with subtitles is similar to volume at 16 without subtitles.
Re:GMP damaging Zen 5 CPUs? on Thursday August 28, 2025 @12:21AM (#45048354)
That was such a fun time to be into hardware. For years Intel had the money and relationships to keep the Pentium 4 everywhere even though AMD had the better product. The P4 might edge ahead in video rendering but the Athlon would win overall and use less power.

Then Conroe launched and the balance shifted. Even the cheapest Core2Duo chips were competitive against the best P4s and the high-end C2Ds rivaled or beat AMD. https://web.archive.org/web/20100909205130/http://www.anandt...

AND those chips overclocked to the moon. I got my E6420 to 3.2ghz (from 2.133ghz) just by upping the multiplier. A quick search makes me think my chip wasn't even that great.

They could 3d stack it with the SoC so if the flash dies (from all that SoC heat) you have to replace all the chips. Or buy a whole new phone.
What if, hear me out, the wheels were on the sides and not front and back. It uses gyroscopes to keep itself balanced. Instead of twisting the handle or pushing a button like a savage you lean in the direction you want to go! This is a totally new idea and not a product that was released over 20 years ago and since discontinued.

I did a detox a few years ago. Just HN and maybe some Google news. Eventually I went back to reddit and it felt so weird. It took some time to get addicted to reddit again because it just wasn't as interesting. I really need to detox again because this stuff has ruined my attention span.
This whole situation reminds me of the EMDrive. There was huge excitement when the news broke of a claimed way to produce momentum without expelling mass. That excitement was only intensified when NASA agreed to test one of the proposed designs. Even after multiple reproducible experiments showed zero thrust a vocal minority still believed.

This isn't exactly like that since the results are slightly less conclusive at this point. But the excitement without reproducible data is definitely there.

I had an idea to use Facebook messanger as a proxy. Specifically to use the cheap messaging plan on a cruise ship for real internet access. My home computer would be a gateway that monitors fb and fetches/returns websites. I never even tried because it just sounds like a violation of multiple ToSes. Not to mention message size limitations, throttling, my fb messages being pages of encoded text, etc.

I feel like it would need to work like Opera mini to maybe be usable. Even then interactions would be uncomfortably slow.

How does that compare to other batteries?

Years ago I used this on my web application to work around a bug/leak. There was an auto update feature that ran on a regular basis. I made a mistake somewhere when replacing page elements that slowly increased memory usage. While developing I would close everything at the end of the day but my users would leave the page up for days. Eventually the small leak would crash the tab.

I "fixed" it by shutting off auto update on page blur then immediately doing an update on focus.

Not a study but I've heard explanations that big companies have so much data their models are just that good. For instance they know who you're friends with, both your search histories, and location data. Knowing you friend searched for lawnmowers recently and now y'all are physically close it's possible that brand was discussed.

Although I wouldn't be shocked at all if mics were being used. I just feel like that would have been leaked by someone by now.
