Maybe the stock market shouldn’t be people’s retirements?
Re:Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half on Sunday November 01, 2026 @10:40AM (#50326685)
Yep TIL, It’s not a thing anywhere in my country that I am aware of.

> Most people aren’t familiar with a peak demand rate because it’s not common in many markets.

That would be correct, I had never heard of this. it seems extremely punishing and something I would hope your government regulators are trying to fix.

The problem for you isn’t electricity it’s your local laws favouring gas and the utility extracting wealth. 86 usd in fees is more then my entire electric bill has been in the summer (the monthly fees here are 15cad a month)

I imagine your per kWh cost is also much higher too

That said I still don’t think on your math entirely holds up. Ovens and electric elements (even more so for induction) do not just draw their rated power continuously. Once they heat up they drop to a much lower duty cycle like 50%. But that is besides the point now.

I’m continually amazed by how well the O&G marketing and propaganda has worked on people. It’s the only way I can explain comments like this

For one meal? For the month? How did you even this? What is your cost per kWh?

Re:MicroZig to Adopt Strict No LLM / No AI Policy on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:20AM (#50284851)
I think normal people would, couple projects I needed features added/bugs fixed and checked first if there were ai rules, there was, so instead of opening a pr just forked fixed and use my fork now. Not a big deal.

Wait for real.. for real! https://www.macrumors.com/2026/10/28/illuminated-logo-return...

I was gonna get it for the oled (also don’t care about touch screen) but now it’s also for the glowing logo!

Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:50PM (#50277885)
I had one a decade or so ago and I did use it because it was there, sometimes. But it’s not a feature I would ever go out of my way to get or pay extra for - the only thing I was looking forward to here is the oled so guess I’ll find out if I will use it.
Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:24PM (#50277253)
I am aware, iirc the rate doubled after covid with most being self harm which is why the platform door discussion has started again. Primarily to prevent suicides and the resulting system shutdowns as the number of unintentional major injuries or deaths has been pretty low over its 40 years of no drivers or attendants and being the 4th busiest in canada/usa. The two new lines currently under construction right now will also not have platform doors.

So despite being fully automated is comparable with most other major metros/train systems that have a driver/attendant with the only metro's performing significantly better being the ones with platform doors - hence my comment of asking "why is an attendant needed for automation?" when it doesn't significantly improve safety in the same way doors would.

in the end we still may not end up with platform doors even thou the study can proceed now as the cost will be astronomical and always with safety systems there might not be the appetite for it.

Apparently arc silos players based on aggression so if you don’t engage in pvp it puts you with other players who don’t and if you do with those who do

Some people really like it, some do not (I don’t play just have some friends who enjoy it)

Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:09AM (#50274981)
SSDs are a more common failure point, as is theft or loss or damage.

The point is it shouldn’t matter if the cpu or ssd dies because you have backed up everything already and are prepared for anything to fail or happen to the device rather then “oh the ssd is removable so in these select few situations I can recover my data”

Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:06AM (#50274922)
Hard drives failing is a far more common problem in my experience. As is theft and loss - one should always treat a laptop as if it will fail at any moment and keep good backups.

If your looking for arguments against soldered storage the facts ssds are wear items and will eventually need replacement is a much better one.

Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:02AM (#50274840)
> They still need a person on board to be sure that nobody is stuck in the doors or wedged between the train and platform before the train starts moving.

Why do they need someone?

Skytain in Vancouver is fully automated and driverless with no attendant on board. Grade separated, doors automatically close, and there are sensors that trigger if someone enters the guideway.

The railroads in the USA were trying to push back and delay improvements to automated safety systems until the 2015 Amtrak 188 crash https://youtu.be/-mzaavmtT9M

Only was finally fully rolled out in I think 2020 5 years after the accident.

Delaying/avoiding spending money on safety seems to be common around the world.

Most of the ones (for cnc and sheet metal at least) I’ve used do an estimate while you poke around and select options and then you send it for a final validation and quote.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:39PM (#50267925)
you should be backing up all devices with removable storage or not, SSDs can also die without warning.
Re:One Must Fall 2097 Remastered on Saturday October 24, 2026 @10:50AM (#50221815)
I know we got a lot of demo discs that were the start of games. Brother and I played episode one of doom so many times know it by heart don’t remember the rest of the game. Same for duke 3d
Re:Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap on Saturday September 12, 2026 @07:27PM (#49678302)
No but if you have specific asks like “make this resizable” “I should be able to drag and drop to combine” or “add a button on the top right to close” it’s quite good at directed changes

Opportunity for gh

“Here is my pr I attach x$ payable when it is merged” and allow me to add $ to other prs.

I have been waiting year + for multiple feature in some projects that have open prs and for one I would easily bid 100-200$

mRNA vaccines and testing of them have been around far longer then 2020
I’m pretty sure it was lost via billions spent on a sustained propaganda campaign no country was willing to stand up to.
Re:Google Hits 50% IPv6 on Sunday June 21, 2026 @10:19AM (#48619214)
Home networks are usually, nearly always, not run by anyone who is capable of “paying attention to the rest of their security controls”
Re:Google Hits 50% IPv6 on Sunday June 21, 2026 @09:54AM (#48619025)
I wouldn’t want a public ip for all the devices and computers on my home network either. Seems like a huge security risk.
You do realize there are many people, especially younger folk, who will never have played or seen the media listed? And if they did not even noticed the symbol?

I’m older and have and I didn’t even know there was a special Nazi skull symbol while I do know about many of their other symbols.

Re:IPv6 address, as a sentence you can remember on Saturday April 04, 2026 @04:11AM (#47636989)
Yep local police partnered with them causing local SAR to go “don’t use it”

https://www.piquenewsmagazine.com/local-news/whistler-search...

https://globalnews.ca/news/8258671/north-shore-rescue-what3w...

Basically the company wants to make money off it so are pushing it and it’s problematic due to it being less easy to use then standard gps cords, words sound the same, and most people have no idea what it is (and nor should they learn lat long)

Re:IPv6 address, as a sentence you can remember on Saturday April 04, 2026 @04:08AM (#47636974)
The company pushes it hard and some fall for the marketing

But locally here most SAR teams are against it

what3words Is terrible and search and rescue teams are actively against people using it.
