> Who needs calculus anyways?

I can't really think of anyone. Maybe just mathematicians, physicists, economists, computer scientists, chemists and engineers. Apparently they even use something called back propagation in AI training, which is nothing but chain rule from ... calculus.

But yeah, I can't see it being relevant since we have linear algebra already.

So you're going to always only do numerical computations only? Good luck solving even simple optimization problems that have a few parameters.
Good luck with calculus tho.
Yep, ranting against galactic polynomial algorithms reminds me of the people who oppose the use of infinity. Like, yes, it's not physically realistic construction, but it makes things simple enough that we can do analytic solutions to problems and simplify terribly complicated things.

Polynomials are closed under multiplication, so you can do a poly algorithms poly number of times and still have a poly algorithm. That's very convenient.

Sounds like we need a War on "War on X"-headlines.
"Those damn elves.. They came out of nowhere.. And were long gone by the time the napalm started raining.. All you could hear was a faint chime of their bells as they retreated to their tunnels.."
I hate this "War on X" rhetoric. They're not going to bomb the ocean or send troops to shoot it, so why make it sound like it? Just say what they're actually going to do about it.

Fascism favors loyalty over competence.

Among other reasons, because it's been evident that the numbers won't add up from the beginning. It's always delicious when reality catches on a major scam.

I switched to engaging more actively on Lemmy. But it's funny how many comments like this there are in this thread, kinda makes me happy I wasn't the only one who couldn't deal with the forced log in bullshit.

This is not true. A major shareholder would definitely have a cash cow company keep producing a steady 5% dividend return plus stock growth over a one-off 30% gain followed by slow death, as they cannot liquidate their position at the peak price anyway. (This was not the case with reddit, but just to illustrate an ideal situation).

It's a failure of the board of the company to allow the CEO to make a quick buck while trashing the future, and can lead to law suits.

The real problem is that the CEO might just have been incompetent enough to think reddit can get away with anything.

On a side note, I stopped commenting on reddit when they got rid of 3rd party apps and stopped lurking after they forced log in. Lemmy has been a decent alternative, but could still use more users.

This is very well illustrated in the fable Boy who cried false positive.
"Look how badly the democrats are handling the Iran war! They have completely failed to restore the trust of our allies in Europe! They did not even televise the execution of the treasonous Trump administration!"

Ok, the last part is wishful thinking, but for sure the dems will be blamed for not fixing Trumps failures fast enough.

For elaborating something unclear they're great tho.
Unfortunately the proposed Sepsteinber did not go through.
They could also just be another distraction. It's better we talk about this than his numerous policy failures or the Epstein files, where the evidence of him raping children could come up.
What did you say about the Epstein files?
Torrenting just scales better, I think it's simple as that.

Only a small fraction of SpaceX stock is available on the market.
Why tho? What's the added value? Those places are terribly inhabitable.
I think you're missing the mark by putting the blame on morals while ignoring actions such as Reagan dismantling unions and removing accountability from news reporting (IIRC, there used to be a law that news networks have to present a balanced view on any topic). Super PACs were not possible until 2010.

You cannot morally impose the wealthy to support the rest. It has to come through legislation and organization of labor.

I thought it was a firing squad execution, televised for everyone to see and enjoy.

It seems well written and interesting.. but not quite interesting enough to drop everything and commit to an hour to read it just now.
You're kind of implying AI economy is in good health. Not sure if this is satire.
Yes, me and all the others are worried that our daily 200km commute in -40 Degrees will not be feasible.

I mean, seriously, it's a small inconvenience once you realize you don't need a huge range in your daily life. I do wish my EV had a longer range, but I get over 300km on a charge and it's more than enough for everyday use.

I'm furiously shaking my fist at the air and cursing the fate that we didn't follow some vague "better" naming convention, as learning a handful of Greek symbols robbed us of the next Riemann. The injustice!
> Arguably the period is far too long, but the concept makes sense.

The system is too vulnerable to regulatory capture.

For sure. However, where this tangent started was that GP suggested that the people displacing Israelis would be other more extreme Israelis. Hot take or not, crazy times.
What about whataboutism? What about making a new thread for these unrelated topics?
And my response was highlighting the fact that Palestinians are being slowly displaced, with no alternative location to move to.
