Well that's why they're going to start injecting ads.
I don’t know any of my passwords and haven’t for a decade, so passkeys are no different in that respect.
If the worry is your phone getting lost then use a password manager that syncs to the cloud and log in with the same passkey using another device. I just got a new iPhone and logged into a bunch of things on-device using synced passkeys. It worked just fine.
Every conversation about this seems to involve someone asserting that improving upon passwords in any way at all is unacceptable unless the solution is perfect in every possible way, with the goalposts constantly moving.
Receiving an email at your backup email address? Getting a text message? It’s whatever you have decided to set up in your account, the same as with a password.
The same way you recover your account when you lose a password.
Every time passkeys are brought up on HN it’s nothing but complaining and/or refusing to learn the basics about something new, but I’ve been switching to them on every site I can for months with literally no problems.
1Password everywhere, on iOS, Mac, and Windows. I’ve run into none of the issues elsewhere in the comments. Everything just works, including in-app logins.
Maybe your other password managers are just bad at implementing the right browser/OS hooks?
Sorry, this just isn’t true. Some clients just don’t have the resources to pay for a dev playing whack-a-mole against residential proxy bots that are basically indistinguishable from legit users, but en masse can take down a VPS.
Rate limiting doesn’t work when individual IPs are only making a handful of requests.
So that’s why we’re using CF/Fastly. Too bad, I’d prefer not to, but there is just not an alternative at this point.
But then you’ll use it to change something, and it won’t update any of the extensive documentation. So then it’s filled with lies.
Yes, the BMW NBT quadlock connector has K-CAN2 (so only body bus, no engine/chassis which is on a different CAN bus). (in true German over-engineering fashion it also has fiber for audio and Ethernet for diagnostics)
I brought up the backup camera as another reason the head unit has CAN, since in my car that's what's handling drawing the backup guide lines.
The aftermarket HU would have enough data to do so, but in my case it doesn't (although it does read CAN for buttons/iDrive). The original HU is still there and functioning, but the aftermarket Android is between the vehicle harness and the original HU with some passthrough and swapping of video cables.
I can hold down the Menu button on my iDrive and the Android HU switches the screen to show the original HU output and I can interact with it normally. And when I put the car into reverse it also switches so I can see the original backup camera feed, then switches back to Android after I drive forward again.
Of course I use none of the Android functionality at all, the whole ridiculous system is solely for CarPlay.
I did not connect ODB2. The HU I got puts itself as a passthrough to the stock BMW HU (which you still need to be able to use, you switch the screen to its output by holding down a button), and that connector includes CAN.
There are numerous reasons the HU needs CAN, for example to get the steering wheel angle to be able to draw the guides over the backup camera feed. Or to switch to the backup camera feed when you put the car in reverse.
Mine does. Its dashboard shows fuel level and a bunch of other things and I can bring up a speedometer/rpm app.
I believe the connection exists because the steering wheel buttons/iDrive talk to the original head unit over CAN.
A republic is a democracy.
This is spot on. They are ripe for getting entirely wiped out by AI, and good riddance tbh.
My personal gripe is their refusal to support restarting heading levels within sections, causing whole classes of problems with CMS templating.
Those have been there for a bit, what is more recent is CSS anchor positioning which lets you position the popover near the item that triggered it. It’s all finally very nice!
I don’t know what world you live in but it’s not this one.
Not saying I like the situation, but Firefox usage is about ~2-3%.
That's about where IE 6 and then IE 11 were when everyone was excited they could finally drop them. Why should anyone treat Firefox differently?
Hey thanks so much! I actually found your site a bit over a year ago while I was redoing my portfolio and used one for my header.
Omg thank you, I had no idea they added this feature!
Dildos aren’t illegal federally but you can’t sell those using Stripe either. It is actually about puritans wanting to control what you do.
"Quality" and "features you happen to want" are two different things.
Unfortunately not satire, and the answer is $500
It appears he is selling a service where he comes to you (optionally with a Mac Mini which is probably why he's buying multiple) and sets up OpenClaw for you.
I definitely pirated Photoshop around 1996 from the macfilez (possibly zelifcam by then) AOL chat room.
The new version has improved a bit since launch, you may want to give it another try.
I tried getting Nix working a couple of months ago and ditched it because changing some Tower settings updates the global gitconfig (as it should in this circumstance) and Nix would wipe them out.
All of it seemed way too annoying compared to just having a dotfiles repo, and if it couldn’t handle the Tower/gitconfig issue I know for sure everything else I was going to run into wasn’t worth it.
One big cause of this is the multi-channel audio track when all you have is stereo speakers. All of the dialog that should be going into the center speaker just fades away, when do you actually have a center the dialog usually isn't anywhere near as quiet.
Depending on what you're using there could be settings like stereo downmix or voice boost that can help. Or see if the media you're watching lets you pick a stereo track instead of 5.1
It "finally hit the top of the project list" two years ago so we'll see lol.
It's "T-Mobile Fiber Home Internet" which looks to be a bunch of local ISPs they've been snatching up, so we'll see what happens. USI's customer service and reliability have been amazing so hopefully that doesn't get screwed up.
Use a ULA (unique local address) for everything internal that you want shorter. It's just like rfc1918 addresses except you don't need NAT.
These types of complaints are how I know the objection to v6 is not serious.
There are a total of 8 groups of 4 hex digits, so 8 minus however many groups you already have.
google.com: 2607:f8b0:4009:819::200e (5 groups) -> 2607:f8b0:4009:0819:0000:0000:0000:200e (3 groups of added zeros)
a ULA address: fd2a:1::2 (3 groups) -> fd2a:0001:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0002 (5 added)
