I really find it mind blowing nothing else from what I've seen has really replicated it. Qt does an alright job but everything just seems to take 50% more effort to get it do the same.

Builder and Delphi 6 had a way to build and design UI's that worked smoothly that I've yet to see from a UI framework.

Yeah I remember hearing about him when I was a kid. Amusing to see a local legend posted to HN. Didn't even have to click the Wikipedia link.

Cardo uses a similar tech for a dynamic mesh network, using Bluetooth I think, in their helmet comms. So if you are out on motorcycles or ATVs you can still talk without needing a cellular network. It makes things a lot more stable and not use any data. In these scenarios you'd struggle to talk face to face wearing helmets without some sort of comm.
So if you can remove the need to buy a specialized comm device to do it, sounds great.

It's something I've just recently run into trying to set it up on an Android tablet. The funny thing is they allow it on an iPad. It'd be great if they allowed just any phone or tablet to link to the primary device.
I'd complain but it's been deaf ears for the last 4 years to get them to put gifs back into the desktop app.

But really great job so far.

Realistically having done road trips, it's stopping every 3 hours and it's not 45 minutes, it's basically the amount of time it takes to get 2 kids out of the car, in to use the restrooms, and back into the car.

Re:Ask HN: What are some of the best Reddit alternatives?
on Thursday June 15, 2023 @04:00PM (#36345704)
Yeah I think that's something a lot of people miss because they never create accounts or only sub to the defaults. If you are in the subs with a million people then yeah they are typically pretty bad. But when you get into small niche hobby subreddits they are usually pretty great, with people who are there because they love the hobby and want others to enjoy it. As well with good advice for beginners.
And what a lot of the alternatives are missing is those people. It's what makes it thrive or wither on the vine.

Delphi and it's components are still nice. But their C++Builder seems like if just keeps getting worse. Instead of maintaining the Borland compiler and debugger they've been replacing it with new ones that work about a quarter as well.

But the difference is that incompetence is far more plentiful than malice. It's an odds game. Everyone makes mistakes, few actions people in general take are done in malice.
Re:Time to retire the CSV?
on Wednesday August 18, 2021 @11:14AM (#28222251)
The whole point of CSV is that it's simple. You don't need and special libraries. If you can write hello world to a file you can make a CSV and more often than not it'll just work. Yes somethings, like DNA, shouldn't be CSV files. But don't blame the tool for bad craftsmanship. There are more things that it works for than doesn't.
As a side note dates should be ISO 8601

Wireshark is fantastic. It also great for listening in on USB connections. The only issue I have with it is I have to use a secondary program to capture the loopback. But rawcap is small lightweight and easy is its not a huge issue

I see it kind of akin to how so few people carry cash on them. Credit cards and streaming are great for the day to day things and make things much easier. It's important to have a backup for the things that you care about. If the power goes out how are you paying for lunch. If your cloud photo site shuts down or has a data failure you just lost those baby pictures.
