Skin cancer is easily treated with excisions if it’s caught early. Better to have ten small false positives than a single miss.
How long did you try them? Some people have immediate changes, some people just notice their lives are easier and going more smoothly after a while of consistently taking them.
How are you determining this scale?
Alcohol has greater negative side effects than pot, and nicotine is more addictive than cocaine or pot. I’m not sure what you mean by “exotic modern stuff,” but if it includes hallucinogens (what people usually mean by modern/exotic drugs) then they’re not really addictive at all.
I ask because the scale reads more like a morality scale than anything based on actual negative effects, either in the individual or society.
If your society can’t survive without a permanent second class of citizens maybe it deserves to be destroyed
The article mentions remote work multiple times, as part of the Doom Loop
I got a recruiting email recently for a job that had 5 days onsite, but SATURDAY was work from home, listed like it was a perk.
It’s wild out there.
Don’t get me wrong, $200k is a lot of money, but it’s not a top end tech salary in SF.
I’ve gotten visibly sunburned on cloudy/foggy days, where it was completely overcast. You may have gotten lucky.
When I got chickenpox in the 80s my grandma made me sit out in the sun to heal it faster. Heliotherapy lives on!
Good, I want them to have pressure to not get sued, so their premiums stay low. If we as a society decide this kind of policing is too expensive, then we can invest that money in other models.
I know what qualified immunity is, and I think it’s a problem. Police don’t get any consequences for their bad actions, so they have no incentive to change. Their toxic culture and strong unions work directly against the safety to all of us that they’re allegedly supposed to provide. The legal system has proven itself incapable of policing itself, so let capitalism have a try.
The insurance I’m talking about is like malpractice insurance doctors are forced to carry, not health insurance. Individual police and departments pay for it, and insurance pays out (instead of the city) when the cops get sued.
Yeah I like that plan better, but it’s just not happening. Tax payers end up paying the lawsuits, and the cops get released once the attention dies down.
There needs to be insurance for police, just like there is for doctors. Once an individual cop has repeated judgements against them they won’t be insurable, instead of the current result of them moving to a different city.
> which instructed the entire national security apparatus to focus on incredibly broad threats, including "anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity;…extremism on migration, race, and gender; and hostility towards those who hold traditional American views on family, religion, and morality."
What a wildly broad list, that doesn’t seem to have clear connection to those that actually take part in terrorist attacks.
Education is not a proxy for intelligence. There are plenty of smart people who don’t have formal education (including many in this forum).
Yes, higher education rates lead to lower birth rates. The movie still has eugenics vibes, by implying that the “wrong kind of people” are reproducing.
There’s a difference between servitude and slavery. Servitude is voluntary, slavery is not. There’s a gradation between them, and indentured servitude is somewhere in between the two. The “issues in implementation” are exactly where the ethical and moral issue lie.
I loved my time at recurse and also had some similar experiences to you. There were cliques and social dynamics that I didn’t fully understand or didn’t want to be involved in, but that’s genuinely normal for me. I’ll go out on a limb and say that’s normal for many people in the tech industry. There were also people genuinely interested in making connections and drawing others into groups, and I haven’t experienced that in other tech spaces.
New York was overwhelming and different than my usual life, and sometimes that felt amazing and sometimes it was hard. Knowing that it was temporary let me enjoy the good parts and not worry too much about the hard parts.
I hate zulip and find it incredibly unintuitive. It’s a real shame to me that it’s the best way to engage with the recurse community, because once my batch was over I haven’t been as involved.
A lot of the program is what you make of it- it’s self directed, and you won’t magically become a different person just by walking through the doors. I do really appreciate all the work that the recurse team puts into setting people up for success, both through the interview process and the light structure they provide.
If you pay attention you’ll see that apples are more expensive the longer it’s been since apple season. They’re cheapest in fall, and the price rises over the year. They store really well, though, so they’re still available year-round.
The AI still can’t understand that Armenian cucumbers should have a MUCH higher potential humor value than milk.
I’m really grateful for the time I spent at the recurse center! Thank you for all the work that goes into making such a special community.
Can you defer enrollment in your masters program? Then you can go to Amazon, and the program is waiting for you if you don’t like it or get laid off.
You can just ask for vaccines at the pharmacy. I got a potentially missed childhood vaccination as an adult and they asked a few questions about why I wanted it, but were happy to give it to me. If it’s something odd you might need to go to a travel clinic.
Like the Jones act but for gloves
I think they were citing the first human case of rabies transmitted by a bat, not the first case of rabies recorded in bats.
I have a Google doc shared with close friends and family that I keep updated with info in case I’m seriously injured or dead. It doesn’t have passwords or anything harmful to leak, just things like what banks I use, contact info for various friend communities and my job, and an (unofficial) medical directive.
It’s free, took me very little time to set up, and in case of an accident should give people enough leads to make their lives easier.
The need is there, but I would absolutely not trust a subscription startup with “ai” in the url to handle this kind of info.
One of the characteristics bee breeders look for is hygiene- more hygienic bees will remove more of their own mites. It’s not entirely dependent on the type of bee.
Well, I’ve only got 10 fingers, so looks like my time there would be limited to 900 days.
Stoked to see this site! I agree with others that a map-based search would be neat, to find local coops.
