You used to be able to replace/extend ThinkPad parts quite easily. We'd buy base models exclusively and just add extra stick of ram and flip the CD rom to another hard drive or battery - those were super cheap high quality laptops.

Only recently Lenovo started to solder their parts so base models lost their power :(

Re:Introducing the next generation of Mac on Tuesday November 10, 2020 @08:46PM (#25054666)
I used t490s for a while and that has been my favorite machine since forever. In general ThinkPads are the way to go by the looks of it!
Re:Introducing the next generation of Mac on Tuesday November 10, 2020 @08:42PM (#25054630)
My work gave me MacBook 16" 2020 and probably the worst business laptop I have ever had. The screen is smudgy and glary, the keyboard is awful, touch bar is a meme, no ports and finally it literally cuts my wrists because it was designed to be looked at not used.

It's an objectively awful laptop.

Re:Introducing the next generation of Mac on Tuesday November 10, 2020 @08:38PM (#25054599)
I really don't get it. How much difference could 8 to 16gb be in terms of price? Is Apple really doing this to save 20$ per machine?

Even if you somehow could argue that 8 is all you need now, what about in few years? No one should ever buy this device.

Re:An Earth-sized rogue planet discovered in the Milky Way on Sunday November 01, 2020 @12:14AM (#24957172)
Honestly that doesn't sound so much for a late civilization.
Re:An Earth-sized rogue planet discovered in the Milky Way on Saturday October 31, 2020 @09:14PM (#24956542)
The instant question this title raises: how hard would it be to move a planet into close orbit of the sun?

Weirdly enough I never came up to a similar scenario in countless sci-fi books. I'd imagine it would be so expensive that if we were capable of it we would probably wouldn't need/want it as other alternatives would be much more efficient, right?

The thought of designed solar system is interesting - what if we FTL is an unbeatable barrier - we might just be stuck here and populate our system with hundreds of rogue passerby planets!

Se 2016 is 123x58

Se 2020 is 138x67

12 mini is 132x64

S10e is 142x69

So s10e is still the biggest one of "high-end small phones" though it has the best screen ratio by far. I do think mini might be just the right size! I hope this will prompt more small phones on the market!

Re:iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro on Tuesday October 13, 2020 @11:58PM (#24772975)
S10e came out year and a half ago! Unfortunate despite everyone complaining no one bought it and we didnt get s20e. Seriously that has been the best smart phone I've ever used or heard of and if mine dies I'm buying the exact same one.
Seems like you've discovered the philosophy of Accelerationism!

Sometimes it does feel that embracing awful system is the best way to topple it.

Re:Apple Watch momentum is building on Friday October 02, 2020 @09:40PM (#24668790)
I've been using various smart watches (currently on galaxy active) and I love them but I still feel that it's only slightly more than a meme.

The core functionality is just gamification like step counts, "hey get up reminders" and some rather pointless blood metrics.

What is great imho is the customizable watches and bands. The bands are like 1$ each and the are like a thousand of brilliant watch faces.

I think smart watches are much better for fashion than function.

I'm sure it's not a coincidence that one of the biggest western social media apps - Instagram - launched a direct clone of tiktok. So far IG reels are dead but if TikTok gets banned there's an undeniable benefit for IG, right?

> I have no problem at all with Bezos being worth $200 billion

Really? You have no problem one person owning so much money? That's around 30$ for _every_ person on the planet, can you even wrap your head around that? There's no reason why a single person should ever own this sort of wealth, none at all.

Re:Remembering my father on Wednesday September 16, 2020 @01:49AM (#24489912)
> Microsoft is just selling unopinionated software to all businesses in the world

You have to be satirical right? Microsoft is notorious for lobbying everything to this day. Browser monopolies, OS monopolies, they pretty much invented EEE, made whole cities switch to their OS and the whole xbox platform is very political regarding software, gambling and IP politics.

Re:When you browse Instagram and find Tony Abbott's passport number on Wednesday September 16, 2020 @01:17AM (#24489766)
Real question here is: should the passport number have any expectations of privacy? It seems like such an easy thing to expose as you literally put it down on every document like hotel check ins etc. AFAIK it's not even a random number and instead it's generated from basic info like birth year/place/gender.

That being said it was a really good blog!

Re:Instant.page on Tuesday September 15, 2020 @04:56AM (#24479207)
Is shaving off 1% really justifies such a hack? The web is already so extremely implicit that even seasoned web-developers are lost in it.
Re:Nvidia to Acquire Arm for $40B on Monday September 14, 2020 @05:35AM (#24468325)
Where are people getting the "decade" number from? Looks demand for RISC-V just went up significantly and it's not like it's broken or not-existing, RISC-V "just worked" a year ago already: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19118642
Re:Nvidia to Acquire Arm for $40B on Sunday September 13, 2020 @11:12PM (#24466387)
Exactly, Apple is already straddling the line (and imho way past it) on anti-comp laws.
Re:Why do so many people want us back in the office? on Sunday September 13, 2020 @07:58AM (#24460247)
> Who's going to pay for me to upsize my apartment so I can make a home office?

Your company. Offices are pretty expensive, if the company goes remote they have extra capital to distribute during yearly review or whatever policy your company has.

I'm not sure if this too offtopic but does anyone know similar applications for languages for young kids?
Re:Async Views in Django 3.1 on Wednesday September 09, 2020 @11:26PM (#24428608)
I really don't get this anti-async mentality on HN. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but async is a complete game changer for me as there just so much IO wait in every project I touch. The fact that my program has to stop and wait for something is honestly unacceptable and it's just a logical conclusion to eliminate this blockage.

I worked past 2 years with asyncio and I have to say it still kinda sucks. The syntax is overly verbose and asyncio itself can't decide what it wants to be. However it still works _good_ for the most part and there's an enormous community and effort in this!

The world has also been burned by paying for apps that turn out to be actually shitty and-or ad-infested.

48hour refunds on google play should have addressed this conundrum but it seems people just aren't aware of it :(

Re:Is Spotify Killing the Top 40? on Monday September 07, 2020 @10:44PM (#24404790)
Honestly I've never met a person who listens to Spotify's top/trending playlists - they are notoriously awful random mess (like all top hit charts)

Spotify is definitely killing top lists but not on purpose - turns out arbitrary top lists are an awful idea once we have free access to music and a strong communities that can curate the music properly. It'll continue to decline as people are learning how to control their playlists better.

You can still browser old UI without any of these issues via https://old.reddit.com AFAIK
Re:Bardcore on Thursday September 03, 2020 @12:29AM (#24360806)
I wouldn't say 20 years but pop music has gotten extremely stale. The clubs/bars are playing the same exact songs since I moved here 5 years ago. Something is awfully wrong with the production line, or more so - people losing their ear?
Re:Bardcore on Thursday September 03, 2020 @12:27AM (#24360792)
I think much of synthwave actually stems from Vaporwave which is probably the most interesting music phenomenon since hiphop imho.

> Furthermore, many non-GPL OSS projects have eventually gone proprietary

Every time it happens people are upset and then forget everything a day later. To me non-GPL + corporate involved is a huge flag, especially if it's a more complex or niche project that'd be difficult to fork.

> Microsoft doesn't gain anything from this

Of course they do. They get PR and at worst case scenario they get quality QA.

As mobile gamer Android has been the only option for the longest time already. There's just too much geolocking as the strongest mobile games come from Asia. If someone is interested in exploring this more check out Qoo app store.
That's not true at all, as many people pointed out in this thread there's a lot of bandwidth even with 3g connections however it is being artificially limited as a revenue stream.
