Re:PHP 8.2.35 on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:50AM (#50180942)
Does anyone know how long it takes for the ondrej/php repo to be patched usually?
Essentially there wasn't enough power going to the turbo which was causing it to spool down. They just allowed more of the electrical power to be used in order to keep the cars running.

I could hard code it to play the fried-liver and I'd still probably trip myself up occasionally.

To be fair it's a daily challenge. Try again tomorrow. But yes, I would love it if there were more game modes (similar to GeoGuessr)
Re:US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s on Sunday March 09, 2025 @08:02AM (#43308339)
Gonna need you to provide some sources on the 'ties to the Ukrainian government' there mate. I don't think there's any doubt that he spent time in Kyiv and posted videos encouraging people to join the foreign legion and help the fight.

But as far as I'm reading there isn't any indication that he had ties to the government outside of some Russian news outlets blaming Ukraine for the assassination attempt.

Thankfully it seems to be uniting the EU rather than dividing. Remains to be seen if they can get their act together though.

Donald Trump really should leave his fragile ego at the door and continue to support the USA's allies at this time. People forget that it was Zelensky refusing to lie which led to Trumps first impeachment.

At the very least this entire 180 and the attempt to humiliate Zelensky in the White House is Trump wanting to enact some kind of revenge.

At the very worst him praising Putin, threatening to leave Nato, threatening other allies, moving troops out of Germany and into Hungary, et all just reeks of something more.. conspiracy theory or not it's pretty disgusting as someone looking in from the outside.

Which also means they're banned in every running event sanctioned by world athletics.

It also has nothing to do with carbon but rather the stack height (>40mm is illegal).

Triathlon hasn't banned carbon shoes. They follow the same rules that World Athletics follows.
Rugby in New Zealand is a good example of this. Our small country with a small population is (and basically always has been) one of the top teams in the world.

Not only at the elite level, but our junior teams and even school teams perform well on the world stage.

Like you say, that social factor plays a huge part in it. Support, funding, etc etc

'nginx -t' exists as a general syntax checker, would be neat to expand it further to include these in depth checks.
Re:Show HN: I made my own OS from scratch because I was bored on Thursday February 13, 2025 @02:20AM (#43033507)
I have 2 young kids, some of the best advice I've been given is that it's a good thing if your kids are occasionally bored.

Why? Because it forces them to problem solve and on most occasions they get pretty creative. I'll often get home from work and there will be a massive blanket fort through the living room, or some kind of obstacle course in the front yard.

Being bored is not a bad thing!

I know kids who have lived on iPads/TV/other devices from a young age, and they don't understand the concept of being bored and watching them try to grasp the concept of 'make believe' is downright painful.

And don't get me started on not being allowed to feel proud! Who hurt you?

Re:IRC Driven – modern IRC indexing site and search engine on Monday January 13, 2025 @08:21AM (#42683137)
I haven't used IRC in years, but when I started out with IRC/MSN Chat in 2001ish it was using mIRC. That piece of software can basically answer for my becoming a developer and the career I've had over the last 20 odd years.
Re:Meta Wants More AI Bots on Facebook and Instagram on Thursday January 02, 2025 @04:20AM (#42572960)
My FB timeline is already a complete mess with most irrelevant garbage as it stands. Not exactly sure what adding additional 'noise' is going to achieve outside of boosting numbers (which I guess is what they want).

A current snapshot my feed:

And as unfortunate as it is, some people see black people running in their neighborhood as a danger to society and will call the police (or in some cases will just hunt them down and kill the person themselves https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/federal-judge-sentences-three...)
But I think that just comes back to his mental game/lack of match prep. The Ding of 5 years ago that pushed even Magnus Carlsen wouldn't have been out of prep 5-8 moves into every game and could've afforded himself more time in the mid-game to find the advantage.

It's basically what allowed Gukesh to do exactly that throughout the match. His opening prep was impressive and because he allowed himself time to think outside of the opening he at least tried to push on most games.

This is a big reason why some of the top GMs (Magnus Carlsen in particular) aren't super interested in playing classical chess anymore.

It's at the point now where a reasonably good GM can learn and memorize a set of openings and more often than not draw the game against the top players. So in order to not lose games or rating points the game is played relatively conservative, rather than trying to push for a win.

Magnus and others are now trying to hype up freestyle chess (Fischer Random/Chess960) in order to take away the standard openings in order to avoid this memorization game and instead go back to the days where you're forced to calculate over the board.

Ding's problem was not his time management but his mental game. It's no secret he's been struggling for the last ~12 months and he admitted as much that he didn't prep well for this match. Having said that, the guy got himself into favorable positions multiple times and then was happy to trade-off pieces/repeat moves to get the draw.

The last game was where he took it a step too far. Several times during the game he had the opportunity to pressure Gukesh to find the correct sequence of moves, only to take the easy way out and trade a piece to make the game more drawish.

His blunder at the end was him thinking he'd just trade off the Rooks and kill off the game, but missed the fact that he basically sac'd his Bishop in the process.

Working fine for me on FF. Once or twice the timeline stops working, but clicking around a bit brings it back.
Re:Timemap.org – Interactive Map of History on Thursday December 12, 2024 @06:09AM (#42398199)
For New Zealand in particular, the flags that are used through history are wildly inaccurate. It's missing the initial flag used before the Union Jack was officially adopted. And the signalling flag that is on there between 1907-1947 was never an official flag and was only kind of used between 1899-1902 before the current flag (Union Jack in the corner with the red Southern Cross stars on a blue background) was adopted in 1902.
I clicked on breakfast:

  - Sugar covered donuts
  - Iced cinnamon rolls
  - French toast
  - Cinnamon roll bites
  - Nutella Croissants
Healthy indeed.
Re:A cycling desk / Zwifting with a split keyboard on Thursday November 14, 2024 @01:22AM (#42133594)
Unsurprisingly, core strength is a big part of cycling. It's a good test to lean down in a more aero position and lift your hands slightly off the bars and see how long you can hold it.

so less pressure on your wrists while typing would be quite the core workout over an extended period of time.

Re:Passport Photos on Thursday November 07, 2024 @01:39AM (#42074075)
Oh boy do I know the feeling. We live overseas and both our kids were born here. So basically the first thing we had to do was get them their passports. Trying to get a 2-4 week old baby to open their eyes and look somewhat at the camera was... an experience.

Tip: Swaddle the baby, lie it on top of a plain light piece of fabric (we used one of my work shirts) and click the camera 100 times.

Having said that though, I'm starting to think an 8 month old would be even harder based on the fact that they move :D

A lot of it probably comes down to the amount of data you feed its algorithm right. If you train a lot (70+ miles of running per week), log absolutely everything, and wear the watch 24/7 then it's going to give you far better estimates than someone who just puts the watch on to run twice a week.
100%. Every semi-serious cyclists would be running a power meter first and foremost (heck even average joes these days because most modern high-end road bikes come with one already). Far easier to do a 20min/ramp test every so often instead of trying to focus on VO2 max.
Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024) on Monday October 28, 2024 @02:30AM (#41968283)
This is something similar to what I've been working on. Currently designing a HAT for a Raspberry Pi that includes temp/humidity sensor as well as particle matter (PMS5003). Trying to end up with my own personal weather station which I'll then publish to a small web app.
It can hardly be called a fork when you wipe every mention of the original dev team in the codebase, and start a fresh changelog with 'Patched security fixes' whilst thanking his team. It's an absolute takeover not a fork.
Night shift/2nd shift is a thing.
Re:The mystery of why left-handers are so much rarer (2016) on Wednesday October 09, 2024 @09:08AM (#41787554)
Yeah my body is all kinds of confused also:

  - Write with my left
  - Cricket/golf right
  - Tennis/squash left
  - Bowl/throw left
  - Mouse right
  - Drink left
  - Eat right (fork in left hand, knife in right)
  - Cut left (but usually don't bother because scissors never work)
  - I also kick well off both feet (although favor the left foot slightly)
I'm definitely more left dominant but can usually do most things well enough with my right. I was also never told/forced to be right-handed.
This shouldn't effect the outcome though. The National party in New Zealand (the government at the time) used a 3rd party agency to source music for their 2011 TV campaign.

It turned out that the music sounded exactly like Eminem's "Lose Yourself" and he successfully sued them http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objecti...

So while it's fair to say that Netflix probably had no idea it doesn't change the fact that they're using images that were stolen.
