Just to add to this comment. $100MM at 2% management fees, leaves $2MM for expenses (audit, legal, accounting), officers and staff. He probably makes most of his annual take in a performance bonus, which this 'screw up' probably reduced.

FWIW, my favorite part showing how these short term guys think: "we heard rumors there was a market in Europe for $70/share" fast forward to "this thing should have been trading in the $60 to $70 range." Based on a rumor from another continent.

Re:Evernote CEO to entrepreneurs: "don't do it" on Saturday April 28, 2012 @02:02AM (#3902165)
Who's the audience? Sounds to me like he's looking for employees who will take a piece of changing the world (equity?) over cold hard cash.

Based on all the talkers I hear, and the positive feedback they constantly get about how "cool" it is that they want to be an entrepreneur.. I think a good hard "don't do it" would be helpful fire under their butts to JFDI.

Reminds me of the saying: "The grass is greener where you water it."
Re:DuckDuckGo is blowing up on Thursday March 29, 2012 @10:55PM (#3774283)
I've been using DuckDuckGo more and more lately since google added a redirect[1] for any link clicked in their search results a couple months ago.

I'm in China and most links I click on google don't load. Perhaps because China is messing with DNS queries to google.com and trying to limit the amount of data they collect on their citizens.

[1] The google link for duckduckgo search result first hits this link, and this is where the pageload errors occur: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&#...

"living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see." - John Lennon
Have you considered working for either Volvo or Mercedes Marketing department?
This makes me think of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet, where he tells a parent their children will live in a time they can never visit or see and therefore must let their children have their own thoughts.

The excerpt "On Children":

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.

  Let our bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.
I may be able to provide some old computers for the space.

Great to see this addition to Beijing!

Sorry, I'm including weekend nightlife in Food expenses. With out it, Food expenses should be around 100 RMB/day, about $400-$500 /month
Beijing, China

$800 in rent (single, just me footing that bill). Food expenses are between $500 and $1000 a month. Could easily spend less, but it makes being social difficult.

I'm working full-time with a RMB salary and working on side projects (a bit slow at the moment).

Local programmers can be cheap, $500-$1500/month. If you want to sell to the local Chinese market online you may need an Internet Content Provider (ICP) license, which could be costly. Note that I know nothing about this process, but it's probably a good idea to talk to a lawyer if this is part of your business plan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICP_license

Do you host locally in China? Do you know any local VPS hosting?

Re:Questions to ask before taking a job on Tuesday July 13, 2010 @03:27AM (#1510650)
This site is blocked in China. Anyone want to help with a synopsis? Maybe just a list of the questions.

Mine would be: 1. Is there healthcare? Which provider? Plan? 2. If you wanted to change something at the company, how would you go about it? Is there an established process? How are decisions made?

Re:Ask HN: Why U.S. people dislike Nokia? on Saturday June 12, 2010 @01:23AM (#1425610)
I've used my e71 for over a year and am very satisfied with it. I bought it unlocked in the US and have used it on international travel (switching sim cards) without hassle. The single best factor is the ability to choose which data connection I want an app to use (ex. 3g, wifi, MSM data, etc).

There are 2 "apps" that are the main benefit. (1) Fring allows me to have video conference calls through skype (basically an early "Facetime", apple in no way is the first one to bring this to the mobile phone). (2) Joikuspot, which allows me to tether my 3G data to wifi. Any number of machines can use the wifi-hotspot that this creates.

Oh, and i like being able to push buttons. I guess I'm old skool. ;)

Re:More weight, fewer reps works best. on Wednesday April 14, 2010 @03:25AM (#1264391)
This is because exercise science is doing experiments that were proven effective by practitioners years ago. In the same way you wouldn't expect to learn bleeding-edge hacking techniques taking classes at the undergraduate college level.. you'd expect to learn them from people who've used them effectively and are re-using them often.
From a worst-case-scenario perspective rail is great. Imagine: When all that expensive fuel goes away (bc of war, resource depletion, etc) and all we're left with is crappy old coal. If we have rail all over the country, we will still be able to plop some coal steam engine choo-choos on that rail and send food/water into major city centers so people don't starve.
Re:Xobni for Blackberry Launches (with really cool demo video) on Wednesday March 17, 2010 @05:53AM (#1198207)
Does anyone know if Xobni has been updated on Outlook?

I used to love the program until one day it crashed my outlook, as well as someone I recommended the program to (made me look horrible). It turns out xobni works great as long as you don't have too many emails per day. And judging by the way it slowed down my outlook, I'm hesitant to install it on my blackberry.
