And you are one of the reasons why some orgs don't want WFH.

I'm quite amazed how many people actually think they can get away with working for few hours and think they are somehow entitled to it under 9-5 40hr workweek contract.

Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:21AM (#50258839)
Yeah, I also don't get why people expect to work 2 hrs instead of 8 and receive same salary.

Once you go from horse to tractor the fields increase but work hours doesn't decrease. And if you still use a horse, you are outperformed by the tractor guys who will sell stuff at less the price that you can sustain.

You didn't convince me.

Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:07AM (#50245062)
Of course such growth cannot be sustained and the word "MAY" is funny there. You cannot have infinity growth, it is mathematically impossible. There are no unlimited (monetary) resources on this planet.
Handling food related stuff, at least in my country, requires tracking and registering temperature for the fridge. It needs to be documented. Either you have a probe that you bring to computer to read data.. or you send it somewhere.

I don't know lot about fridge internet tech, but I can see that communication is needed to send this data. Having a hub to be able to do it is probably introduces complexity, but also maybe viable solution.

We had a blackout for a prolonged period of time (not 24hrs, but was 12+). Next day thee shop had all the freezers empty. If the "food and safety administration" on your audit catches that you still sold food when temp dropped under x for period of time, I bet you get into trouble.

You also get into trouble if you don't have records to show.

I'v been coding now for like 15 years and I'm not old enought to understand the debate between spaces vs tabs :)

I guess my IDE choices never surface the issue for me... visually they just look the same. I cannot say which codebase uses spaces which uses tabs. I never even think about it. I just smash tab character and don't care that there have been spaces. Or enter or { and IDE does the indentation. I just choose not to press space 2-4-8-16 times in a row.

Now I hope I won't get bulldozed over by HN crowd...

Re:TV4 postpones show after AI agent erases edited material on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:00AM (#50087075)
You don't get to blame AI if it irreversibly deletes your data.

You either didn't have backup or didn't contain your agent to a place it cannot do irreversible harm.

Actually Toy Story 2 was also (almost) lost because backups were not working for month+: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_Story_2#Troubled_productio...

A stay at home mom working remotely (In 1998!) to take care of newborn had a copy on her computer...

As we are using hypertext, I thought it would be useful to throw a link in here... but following your instructions feels like navigating a paper map. I don't see LICENSE.md here: https://github.com/be5invis/Iosevka/releases

But alright, I realized you must download the archive to find LICENSE.md in there: https://github.com/be5invis/Iosevka/archive/refs/tags/v34.9....

The license is "SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1." from http://scripts.sil.org/OFL

Is it only me but I really dislike "Code Ligations"? I have to mark some chars to count how many consecutive "=" simbols there are... or \/ looking like V without having other chars near it to distinguish. Having to copy paste diamond shape to find out it is <>. arrows with squiggly tails, /> being ugly, <. having dot in the middle...

That could be the maximum I'd like out of font to have "proper" greater/less-equal sign.

100 "Secret" word list sounds statistically more improbable than cracking your password.
> when calculating Starlink profits they're ... also negative

No.

Starlink profits are positive since 2023: https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1720098480037773658

Their growth is insane. The operating income (not revenue which is double digits, but irrelevant) in 2025 was 4,4B and with the growth they have, they are profiting multiple billions a year.

That's an incredible achievement. But you seem to be ignoring the goals of Starship program - to make economically viable and reusable means of space transportation.

It's like after Jobs unveils iPhone to the world you'd comment that, meh, we could make telephone calls more than 100 years ago?

I wonder how this type of comment would apply to software development world where something innovative is being built, currently not ideal but the devs would just look at it: Meh, it doesn't do X, it doesn't do Y, it does Z worse and it doesn't send email!

Maybe AI applies here - from a few years of supercharged intellisense to builds stuff on its own. But even here I don't remember such a skepticism some folks are aiming at Starship.

It's like running into R&D department and just pointing out at the flaws/not implemented features while you iterate on your product. Annoying.

> near-orbit with one vacuum engine failing

near-orbit was planned, they just had to burn longer. It's in the timeline: https://www.spacex.com/launches/starship-flight-14

But yeah, they had a big decision to make in those few minutes between engine cutoff ang insertion burn.

Re:What It's Like to Work in One of America's Data Centers on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @05:03AM (#49813393)
Well we can hope that AI will become power efficient :) May be a headache for DCs for sure, but what can you do.

And the way things are structured is that heating is amended and not exactly a direct connection to residential buildings at the mercy of DC load.

Re:Markdown in /src on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @05:01AM (#49813381)
Weird. I changed/amended model/integration and it updated table, provided explanation.

But yeah, I like to reference the docs so it can refresh his memory. But I may have had the .md files updated even if I didn't explicitly provide/ask for it, but a refactor that touched particular areas.

But yeah, my .md references others, it also maybe helps that my dir is named docs/ and it lists it somewhere in .md files... maybe its just the way it is structured helps infer agent what to do.

Re:Markdown in /src on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @02:24AM (#49812388)
My agent, whenever changes are made, happily keeps those .md files up-to-date with newest changes.
Re:What It's Like to Work in One of America's Data Centers on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @07:26AM (#49799541)
Don't know about US, but I work within European Datacenter where we intend to have excess heat to be used for residential building heating [1]. You must be in proximity of the consumer for this to be possible. Not necessarily center is needed, but even then, DCs can be pretty :)

For example our office is heated using heatpump that has >22C of water heated by equipment as a source.

Re:The NASA/ESA Mars Sample Return mission has been canceled on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @03:35AM (#49797794)
The fascinating thing is that it wasn't a primary part of the mission but got lots of excitement. For me it was the thing that it features many off-the shelf parts from smartphones, uses linux and other open source software and it beat the expectations on how long it will service - Planned ~30 days with 5 flights and it did almost 3 years with 72 flights. https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/after-three-years-on-mars-...

> saves much time

Reviewing and reading everything makes this feeling, yeah.

However where I can say 100% it saves time is discovery by answering these questions:

  - At what state does bug X manifests?
  - Explain how integration/feature works.
  - I want to integrate with system X: Audit what items/features are used and what model changes are needed on my side

Re:ChatGPT Images 2.5 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @03:32AM (#49622662)
Can someone recommend a correct way for interior design ideas?

Yesterday tried GPT-6-Astra Light to have a kitchen remodel... well it did understand 2D space, an improvement when tried on GPT-5.6-Sol

But the image representation was way off and I was not satisfied... misplaced the window, drew a wall which was not on 2D image, cabinet size issues. Eh.

Re:Ask HN: How do you manage skills files? on Monday September 07, 2026 @03:39AM (#49595170)
Skills are evaluated by short description whether to read them into context.

Skills itself may be lengthy so...

Re:Ask HN: How do you manage skills files? on Monday September 07, 2026 @03:35AM (#49595145)
Last week I had to reuse homemade skills on different project. I very much liked the AI proposed solution and it works quite well: ship as a plugin and add your git repo as a marketplace.

The installation is effortless and I don't have to mess with symlinks as I may be working with same codebase on different platforms which would make things.. different.

  codex plugin marketplace add "https://path-to-my-git-repo"
  codex plugin add agent-tools@mycompany

  claude plugin marketplace add "https://path-to-my-git-repo"
  claude plugin install agent-tools@mycompany

Let the AI generate .json files for marketplace.

Haven't got to these bits yet, but I'm sure they will work as easy as install does.

  claude plugin marketplace update mycompany
  claude plugin update agent-tools@mycompany
Re:Fable 5.1 World Modeling on Thursday September 03, 2026 @04:51AM (#49547546)
Uh, I tried feeding 5.6 Sol High my 2D DXF drawings of my house floor layout & house exterior to generate 3D visualization within blender via MCP... and it was miserable. No understanding on how windows attach to walls, misaligned bearing walls between floors, gaps all around the places, chimney not continuous, windows don't line up and are in wrong places, house parts swapped. And still struggling when I explain those things - that it is a house and real-life architectural constraints should be taken into account. But I just had to keep prompting to fix this, that, redo this and that and then it breaks other things until I fed up.

Part of it is probably struggle to understand the DXF and mixing up "wall lines" with "dimension/helper lines" (I tried also feeding PDFs)

Anyways, if someone has an idea how to improve 3D modelling with AI or how to make understand 2D drawings to understand rooms/walls/square meters, etc - would be nice.

Re:Debian polls its developers on AI: permit or ban? on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @08:46AM (#49448121)
I know few CEOs/Business owners who are non programmers (well one was exposed to it/learning, but didn't go down that path) and they do use AI for various work and non work related things. One told me how at manufacturing plant someone solved some unpleasant process to input specs into machine for manufacturing by having AI creating the automation.

His comment to me was: People who don't embrace AI will eventually be outcompeted by the ones who do.

Working as an admin, multiple times I thought - hey, the hated Vista actually introduced this under the hood - something normal people don't see.

Some task scheduling and event subscription features I think were from there that I liked. Firewall, BitLocker, WinRE

I asked GPT to list features introduced within vista... boy are there TON of stuff that got changed under the hood.

Think it would have same memory bandwidth if the RAM was upgradeable?

Would be nice if someone knowledgeable about electrical engineering and manufacturing processes could lay out some valid reasons for manufacturers to integrate RAM onto the motherboard.
