Another way to word that is: You don't believe that the millions of people voluntary using the app are useful idiots who need to protected from themselves via government force. More likely is that the government has deemed the platform uncontrollable/uncensorable because of its foreign ownership.

<whiney rant> After notjustbikes got big, he dropped any humility and started preaching to the choir, calling people who didn't agree with him racist idiots. I complained in the comments that I used to be able to recommend his videos sight-unseen to the people who needed to be convinced. He replied and insulted me as someone who just found his channel and couldn't take the truth. </whiney rant>

im reminded of an ipad app 10 years ago that did roughly this, creating a magazine like interaction with your twitter, google reader, etc.

We can now say cutting off the internet is their goal:

Israeli official says will fight Starlink’s deployment in Gaza

The minister of communications has said Israel will “use all means at its disposal to fight” the use of Elon Musk’s Starlink to support connectivity for aid groups in Gaza.

Posting on X, Shlomo Khari said if the Starlink satellite internet is deployed “Hamas will use it for terrorist activities”.

“There is no doubt about it, we know it, and Musk knows it,” he wrote.

“Perhaps Musk would be willing to condition it with the release of our abducted babies, sons, daughters, elderly people,” he wrote.

Musk had made the offer to use Starlink in Gaza earlier today, although further details have yet to emerge.

He doesn't know why they want to speak with him:

“I still don’t actually know whether the terrorism investigation into me is focused on Palestine or on Wikileaks. It seems to be both and anything else they can get.”

I read somewhere that the hottest mix of the two is around 30 degrees.
It's false imprisonment against civilians to achieve political ends. But good luck trying to convince a comment section of the immorality of that.

Re:Types of Garden Hoe on Sunday August 06, 2023 @06:30PM (#37027578)
I was looking for something like this. Thanks.

For digging, in the hardest dirt I use a mattock/adze style tool (adze on one end, pick on the other). In more reasonable dirt a "grub hoe", and finally a flat shovel in the softest of stuff.

For moving dirt, a big scooping shovel (think snow scooping); the "american standard" hoe is for shaping dirt on the ground (a rake for dirt).

Another way to say is "They don't already have that right?". Can't they already get/negotiate work-from-home jobs voluntarily with other equally free people?

I'm not arguing against you, but you're giving the technical, logical explanation to a purposely a-technical and a-logical claim. The vast majority of people (not the ones who think like you or me) simply call the use of force against other people in order to get what they want (the social order they want, etc) "rights", whatever the moral implications (or even practical consequences).

"all viewpoints" depends on how open your Overton window is, right?
To add to your point: Aren't there countries that have "online visas" for short stays (I'm thinking central asia and I hear russia has done the same) that are equal to this "not-a-visa"? Do people think visa by definition requires an in person meeting?
Re:News Is Bad for You on Wednesday July 05, 2023 @02:49PM (#36605232)
Go about it indirectly: Keep your eye out for hobbies you can suggest. If he gets interested in something new, he'll have to make tradeoffs with his time. If turning off news = being bored (in his mind), it's not so appealing. But if he's excited about... woodworking, dancing, painting, piano, horror films... he'll automatically be pulled away from news.

Re:Twitter now requires an account to view tweets on Sunday July 02, 2023 @12:20AM (#36558188)
correct. the first link you can use manually. The second link is a browser addon. The 3rd link you save to your computer then "import" in that addon to always rewrite twitter.com/username to the first link.
Re:Twitter now requires an account to view tweets on Sunday July 02, 2023 @12:19AM (#36558175)
for example:

https://syndication.twitter.com/srv/timeline-profile/screen-...

change the word at the end with the username you want to see
