Can you provide examples of such a place? From my perspective, I find it difficult to believe that this has ever been attempted at a scale that is sufficient to come to that conclusion. I'd love to hear otherwise.

Format on save is my worst enemy. It may work fine for go, but you'll eventually run into code where it isn't formatted using the one your editor is configured for. Then, you end up formatting the whole file or having to remember how to disable save formatting. I check formatting as a git hook on commits instead.

I used gentoo for years. While I still have a fond spot for those memories, saying that it is simpler than nixos is just flat out wrong. I've vastly simplified my involvement and removed most pitfalls from my day to day. Years pass with minimal breakage or churn and my devices just keep working.

I think it may just be a personal thing about the feeling of a vehicle. All of my cars felt dead until I got into an EV. Now, I actually get giddy about using it and accelerating. Before it was just emptiness.

I see it more as a simplicity fetish. I don't want to have to deal with the complexity of software that is not packaged via nix. It's a big headache to deal with, I need it to be simple and work.

This has been the primary hurdle for me. I like it when I can just install regular linux and be on my way. Having to do a bunch of kernel nonsense is just not fun. I don't even mind messing with the kernel, but I want to use the mainline kernel.

I like eggs fried crispy. I like eggs fried in butter. Eggs fried gently and soft are luxurious. Oil cooked eggs are lovely. You can do it in a wok and get them puffy with a crispy bottom and a soft top. Or you can make the top crispy. Sometimes butter brings extra flavor when I really want the egg flavor. There are many valid ways to make eggs.

If anyone needs to stay in their lane, it is you. Your analogy doesn't work either. I have my build scripting standardized and in version control. You can't change it because you don't have permission. Even if you did, I still have my copy. Your rude attitude is unwelcome.

I think this may be far more personal than expected. One of the things I like about running NixOS on my workstations and servers is that it's mostly hands off and right where I left it. I commonly go weeks to months or more without touching it, and it's all right there, organized, and ready to go. It allows me to offload a lot of the context and there's not much to have to remember.

Re:Ask HN: Looking for Headless CMS Recommendation
on Thursday September 04, 2025 @11:48AM (#45128603)
In every experience I've had, non-technical people have had a terrible time doing customizations. Not a single time have I ever seen them successfully navigate customizing pages without someone else stepping in. I see this as the worst case scenario: non-technical people can't do it and technical people also can't because they only have subpar tools to do so. I disagree wholeheartedly with this assumption.
Re:Ask HN: Looking for Headless CMS Recommendation
on Thursday September 04, 2025 @11:46AM (#45128574)
In my experience, wordpress is very confusing for non-technical people to navigate. It is largely not different than a "custom" setup because it's always some patched together job of various plugins to the point that it becomes brittle and difficult to work with. I get the sense that technical people think it is more straightforward and prescribe it to people, but any non-technical person I've worked with is utterly lost in it.
I don't think the LLMs change the argument either. If anything, dealing with the complexities of wordpress could make it even more difficult without someone who knows what they're doing.
Somewhere around 15 years ago, I thought wordpress was viable, but I think we need to leave it in the dust. I worked with it again 5 years ago, and the situation was no different from what I could tell.
