Silicon Valley has to be at least 65% cult.

This might sound super gross (ok, it's super-gross) but I have a pet theory that your odds of being hired have a lot to do with your "fuckability" - regardless of your gender. That is to say, I think men who hire will also prefer to hire other men who look good, even though they're likely totally uninterested in them sexually.

Yeah I like spritz, but also like Spreed better.
I doubt the ACA will ever fully live up to its promise because Congressional Republicans need to try and overturn it every 4 months. Even if they don't succeed, they still end up injecting uncertainty into the market, which drives up prices. And it will go on forever and ever. It'll be one of those things Republicans never, ever let go of like abortion and guns.
OK, but as long as individuals buy their insurance through an exchange so that they can benefit from group purchasing. Otherwise, people who purchase as an individual won't be able to negotiate for lower prices.
Hey, doctors have a lot of shitty real estate investments they need to cover.
The bringing-out is itself a kind of context. That kind of critical/analytical context is far, far different from simply setting up a forum in a huge social media site where impressionable people sometimes congregate. It's like the difference between a biology lab where students perform dissection and a dirty, stinking, public restroom where people graffiti on the wall and poop in the urinals.
Hey, ya know what? There are some people who very strongly believe that the only place in America they can live safely is in the SF Bay Area. And we're going to see more and more stories in the news about why that's the case as time goes on.
It's 'cause Texans are classy.
It's still quite possible to be a completely legal asshole. I'm surprised this is news.

David Hume's Problem of Induction strikes again! But that's not how science works.

And as we saw, despite claims from worry warts like Ron Paul, and from gold advertisers playing pump 'n dump, there was no inflation in the US to speak of. Throughout The Great Recession government bond prices remained high - which allowed the US to continue borrowing & spending without being reigned in by financial markets.

"...there is huge political opposition to counter-cyclical fiscal policy."

Congress doesn't want to spend money on infrastructure.

My pet theory is that there's a recession in the first term of any new president. Although, you'd have to give an allowance for Bush Sr. sharing one with the first term of Bill Clinton.

If a president could time a recession, it would make sense to ensure that it was over before the next election.

For a certain class of people, recessions aren't a problem, but a tool which allows you to write off your more speculative investments.

Oh good. Just in time to keep labor from having any pricing power. Excellent.
Oh OK, so they're burnout factories.
This smells a bit "pump & dump"-ish to me.
Re:Ellen Pao: My lawsuit failed. Others won’t on Monday August 21, 2017 @05:12PM (#15067895)
Pardon my pedestrian take, but I think we're on similar pages. This is the weird, bizarro-world we inhabit because these "markets" are run by supply-side money flows. These companies don't have time to deal with the pesky issue of actual demand. Having more cash to burn is not a "sustainable competitive advantage", but we're probably long past that being meaningful to anyone.
Nope.

Or you'll spend it all on rent?
Re:Americans Are Dying Younger, Saving Corporations Billions on Wednesday August 09, 2017 @12:26PM (#14970884)
Always nice to see a perverse incentive. But thankfully, in America we work for corporations, not the other way around.
Did you feel a disturbance in The Force?

Labor has no pricing power. Everything else follows.

I dunno. Does 95% beat getting shot?

BTW, your comment is yet another indication that Hacker News is infiltrated by people likely to be paid to post pro-hyper-rich propaganda. I mean, what's in it for you to oppose a more progressive tax rate except to prove your deep misunderstanding of the power of capitalism to push all the money to one corner?

So what if the rich pay for everything. Look, man. The poor have nothing. There's nothing left. They're not going to retire. They'll work until they drop dead. They don't get decent health care. They'll die from avoidable, treatable illness. And if conservative Congress had its way, there'd be less Medicaid. Oh, and now they want to take away the right to sue elderly nursing homes. At what point do you decide that torturing your fellow American is enough?

Perhaps more important (for Google, at least) is to be compliant with employment law, than to allow "rational conversations about the issue of diversity."
Re:Can we please do useful things with software? on Monday August 07, 2017 @08:45PM (#14952536)
First of all - you poor thing. But for reals, yes, capital seeks returns. And the people who need the most help have the least capital to make themselves interesting to capital.

And that's why we need infrastructure spending from the government. But if anything, we have a government (in the USA) that's more interested in demolishing infrastructure that helps actual people, and instead wants to offer tax cuts to very, very rich people.

Douglas Rushkoff is right. All these companies are going after the data-play when in fact, most people simply have no more money to spend.

And one of the reasons why we got both Trump & Sanders during the primaries is because labor has no pricing power. Most people are afraid to ask for a raise, and apparently nobody with any power seems to give a damn.

We have an increasingly supply-side economy. Normal people will reliably spend any extra dollar they get. But I bet you could throw money at super-rich companies like Apple all day long and it wouldn't increase demand for anything (perhaps except the stock price - if they had an aggressive dividend policy, I guess).

And now they want "tax reform" which I suppose will lower corporate tax rates. That's not going to help generate demand.
