Just use the microphone in the smart tv. That's what the CIA does: https://www-washingtonpost-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.wa...
Even wild animals change their behavior when they get free stuff. Why do you think the zoo has big signs that say "do not feed the animals"?
Re:The Metaverse Has Always Been a Dystopian Idea on Monday August 02, 2021 @08:27AM (#28035660)
Yup nothing binds us to that choice.

Just like nobody was forced to buy a model T. Nobody was forced to plug their phone line into their computer. Nobody was forced to get a streaming box.

This is happening because people desire it on the margin. And the network effects will make it more attractive each time somebody adopts it.

Re:The Metaverse Has Always Been a Dystopian Idea on Saturday July 31, 2021 @10:16AM (#28018312)
Value only requires that somebody is willing to pay for it. Any other measure of value is just moral relativism.

What purpose does The Simpsons fulfill in the physical world?

This is just a step further than what already exists. And it's already happening; nobody can stop it, no matter how many pearls you clutch.

Not being allowed to do things is called being regulated. So Facebook shouldn't be regulated in the same way that ATT is because they currently aren't being regulated in the same way that ATT is?

That's a bit pedantic.

At&t is a private company, and it isn't allowed to censor your calls for whatever clever or asinine reasons it comes up with.
Roasted. Media is broken.
Re:Software engineering research is a train wreck on Tuesday July 20, 2021 @02:43PM (#27897556)
I would expect the opposite. As the mechanical stuff becomes cheaper and more automated, the creative work decreases in proportion but increases in absolute terms.

The timescale is definitely different though.
Also it might be helpful for you to engage with the source text re:Turchin if you want to have conversations about his ideas.
I never claimed to be perfectly aligned with your opinion. I just agreed that the person you were responding to was off, in that the issue isn't whether or not people are "good enough."

Trump circumvented the traditional process for becoming president by aligning with the underclass...

The elites made fun of him relentlessly. Bannon ran Breitbart out of a random townhouse basement and was denied press credentials by those empowered in the national association.

The elite tried to block both of them, and they were circumvented by interclass alliance. That's the entire idea of elite overproduction, which is what we are talking about.

Elite overproduction is basically when more people have the resources to grab power than the power structure allows to hold power.

Not arguing that trump is a victim, just saying he has been considered gauche and passé for a long while. Gauche and passé ends up just meaning "not elite."

If you make a million dollars a year running a plumbing business, you are rich, but you aren't elite. If you make 400k at Skadden, you are closer to being elite.

Turchin, the guy who came up with this, applies it specifically to trump.

Well it would be helpful if you did.

Maybe some nice corp would be willing to buy an issue of a journal so that you can publish and distribute the solution!

Re:Juul bought an entire issue of a scholarly journal on Thursday July 08, 2021 @07:29AM (#27770591)
Horrible example but the basic idea is right. Social sciences are probably a better place to point to.
Yeah I dislike this framing.

Elite overproduction isn't about "good enough," it's about alignment.

Trump was never accepted into the NYC elite social circle. They had money, elite education, and influence. But they weren't in-group.

Bannon also is a good study.

And there's always a couple of weirdos at prep school who don't quite fit in.

Re:Kind Engineering [video] on Saturday July 03, 2021 @02:18PM (#27723616)
Psychological safety is so critical.

I'm almost certain you have, at some point in your career, correctly implemented a feature, only for an operations or product counterpart to blame you for some piece of out of scope functionality not being there.

How did that make you feel? Did you alter your behavior to be less helpful in the future? Did you start recording meetings so that you had a source of truth on explicit scope?

If team members think or feel that they "need to cover their ass," that hurts the company's mission, and wastes resources. Worse, it can lead to managers pushing for excessive due diligence, which saps the motivation of ICs.

Blame is ultimately a waste of energy. Every team member is going to make mistakes if they are taking sufficient risks. You can fire people who have a negative contribution level or chronically underperform without leaning on blame.

Re:Bay Area cities want to end single-family home zoning on Saturday July 03, 2021 @01:33PM (#27723290)
We don't need to force a shift. We just need to get rid of incentives for cars, like off street parking requirements and free parking.

The government shouldn't be telling people what they can or can't build (beyond safety)

So, for people to quickly implement http requests, we need to feed, clothe, and discipline humans for a minimum of two decades, backed by legions of teachers, doctors, and professors with endless time to service them.

That doesn't seem sustainable. It also seems like a poor cost to value ratio

Re:The blackout Palestinians are facing on social media on Wednesday June 30, 2021 @07:56AM (#27687409)
Everything you hear and see about the wider world is because somebody else with much more power than you decided you should.

By letting them decide what you care about, you've delegated your decision-making.

I think that's fucked up.

Also everything the other commenter said is right.

Re:The blackout Palestinians are facing on social media on Sunday June 27, 2021 @01:43AM (#27648921)
Why not? Who cares?

Like he said, this is far from the worst conflict going on right now and it receives a disproportionate amount of interest.

I don't care about the conflict in china or in Yemen or in syria. Because I'm a coherent person, I also don't care about what's happening in israel.

Yeah this vigilantism from careerists in the federal bureaucracy must be punished.

We're never going to hear about the ins and outs of their darlings like AOC and Sanders (whose wife defrauded and destroyed a college she was put in charge of).

Instead this is a hit on people they dislike or disagree with.

Edit: y'all can downvote me all you want. I used to work in DC and I know the difference between a law, signed off on by elected officials who represent you, official rules, that go through a rule making process, and guidance, which is being routinely abused.

I also know that activists and bureaucrats are actively conspiring to push policy without winning a single election.

Everybody loves when people they agree with bend the rules, but what we've seen over the last several decades is a warping and poisoning of our policy infrastructure.

You're really selling me on moving my company to a 4 day work week.
Do you mean Blackstone?
Sourcing and training new people all the time just can't be cheaper than better working conditions.

I don't get it.

And wind turbines kill birds. And solar fields disrupt habitats.

What about it?

Bullshit. Delivering power and water are incredibly complex. Water has to be sourced from God knows where, you have to do planning on building reservoirs. You have to manage run off (hey, your horses can't keep shitting near that stream!). You have to treat the water and manage it's acidity. You have to keep mains running. If a leak springs and the system goes under pressure, the whole supply can become contaminated! So now you have to notify your users that they need to BOIL THEIR WATER! you have to detect leaks in the last mile of delivery so that you can protect the system. You have to keep your pumps from getting flooded. You have to manage subsidy programs and different user classes. You have to integrate with federal and state water authorities.

Utilities are complicated. There's no such thing as delivering and not failing to deliver.

Re:IRS records reveal how the wealthiest avoid income tax on Tuesday June 08, 2021 @06:05PM (#27441602)
The tax code is the product of the legislature and the courts, both of which are accountable to voters.

The bureaucrats are functionally accountable to nobody. This leak was instigated by a bureaucrat.

Fuck the bureaucrats.
